Microsoft yesterday announced a tablet that may get Apple’s attention. Called the Surface tablet, it has two flavors. One is powered by an ARM processor and the other is powered by an x86 processor. It’s going to powered by Windows RT or Windows 8 and it comes with… wait for it… a keyboard!:
At 3mm thick, it adds virtually nothing to the device’s size, but it opens up a world of inputs. There are two covers available — the Touch Cover (very thin) and the Type Cover (with proper, tactile keys).
Interesting. This will get the attention of people like me who don’t like typing on screens. Want more? Check out a site that has been created to showcase this tablet. We’ll have to wait until it actually ships to see what it looks like and how it performs.
So, does Apple have reason to worry? Post a comment and share your thoughts.
Microsoft Says Surface 2 Selling Out…. Oh Really?
Posted in Commentary with tags Surface on October 7, 2013 by itnerdI had a look at the Microsoft Surface blog over the weekend and noted this post:
You may have heard that the pre-order stock of the Arc Touch Mouse Surface Edition, Type Cover 2 in Purple and Black, and Touch Cover 2 has sold out at Microsoft Stores in the U.S. It also looks like pre-order stock of the Surface 2 (64GB) and Surface Pro 2 (256 GB and 512GB) are close to selling out – also at Microsoft Stores. We’re pretty happy about this of course given we just unveiled Surface 2, Surface Pro 2 and the new accessories to the world only a week or so ago.
So according to Microsoft, The Surface 2 tablets are selling out. There’s just one problem. Microsoft has said that the original Surface tablet sold well, but then took almost a billion dollar charge on unsold Surface inventory. So, one has to wonder if this is history repeating itself or does it have a hit on it’s hands?
This will be interesting to watch to see which side of the fence this lands on.
