Posted in Commentary with tags on May 1, 2025 by itnerd

Today, TELUS announced its 20th annual TELUS Days of Giving kicks off on May 1, uniting TELUS team members, retirees, and partners around the world to volunteer and give back in their local communities. Throughout the month of May, TELUS team members, retirees, families, and partners around the world will participate in thousands of volunteer activities for TELUS Days of Giving. This global movement, which began as a single day of service two decades ago, now encompasses a diverse range of initiatives including environmental cleanups, food bank support, youth mentorship, and technology-focused efforts like device recycling. TELUS Days of Giving not only addresses immediate community needs but also fosters a year-round culture of volunteerism. This signature program runs from May 1-31 and last year alone, 83,000 volunteers gave back in 33 countries, contributing to 1.5 million volunteer hours in 2024, for the second consecutive year, more than any other company in the world.

With recent studies highlighting that one in five Canadians now rely on charitable services to meet essential needs, and more than half of charities unable to keep pace with current demand, TELUS’ longstanding commitment to giving back has never been more vital.

TELUS announces two new offers, supporting reforestation efforts for Earth Month

Posted in Commentary with tags on April 17, 2025 by itnerd

In light of Earth Month, 2025, TELUS is launching two initiatives offering customers the opportunity to join them in reforestation efforts this year. Following two back-to-back record-breaking wildfire years in Canada, reforestation is particularly crucial to climate resilience. According to recent studies, replanted areas that have suffered from wildfires can experience regrowth up to 25% faster than areas that were not replanted.

Buy One, Plant One
From April 17 until May 15, for every new, or certified pre-owned Android device purchased by a new or returning customer, TELUS will plant a tree in a wildfire-affected region of Canada. Additionally, when trading in any preloved device, TELUS will plant a bonus tree. This promotion is eligible in select TELUS and Koodo stores, online or via customer service representatives.

TELUS Tree Totes:
On April 22, TELUS is launching limited-edition Tree Totes at TELUS stores nationwide. These 100% recycled cotton tote bags will be available for $3 CAD, and for every bag purchased, TELUS will plant a tree in wildfire-affected areas in Canada.

To date, TELUS has planted 19 million trees, covering an area equivalent to the size of Vancouver. We’ve also diverted 15 million devices from landfills, including 4 million mobile devices that were upcycled and recycled since 2010. These initiatives build on TELUS’ long-standing commitment to sustainability as a global leader in this space, investing in innovative technology and sustainable business practices to help address the impacts of climate change.

TELUS to launch Canada’s leading Sovereign AI Factory, powered by NVIDIA

Posted in Commentary with tags , on March 18, 2025 by itnerd

TELUS, in collaboration with NVIDIA, announced today that it plans to build Canada’s leading Sovereign AI Factory — a powerful and super-secure facility that will give Canadian businesses and researchers access to cutting-edge technology — helping them develop smarter AI products, streamline operations and stay competitive in a fast-changing world. It provides the supercomputers and software needed to train AI while keeping data safe within Canada’s borders.

TELUS plans to deploy NVIDIA’s latest-generation, industry-leading graphics processing units (GPUs), following NVIDIA Cloud Partner (NCP) Reference Architectures and software stack, at its data centre in Quebec by summer 2025, with expansion planned at its facility in British Columbia.
The Sovereign AI Factory will leverage TELUS’ high-speed, ultra-low-latency, fibre-optic network with sustainable data centres powered by 99% renewable energy sources to deliver AI as a Service (AIaaS).

TELUS’ world-class data centres are designed to be three times more energy efficient for excess power usage than the industry average, using significantly less electricity to power AI computing workloads. The facilities also rely on natural cooling, cutting water consumption by more than 75% compared to traditional data centres. With these efficiency measures in place, TELUS’ Sovereign AI Factory will be one of the most sustainable AI-ready data centres in the world

NVIDIA’s latest Hopper- and Blackwell- based supercomputers will power the AI Factory, enabling faster AI model training, fine-tuning and advanced inference capabilities. TELUS will be among the first to introduce these accelerated computing platforms to Canada, playing a crucial role in the country’s AI ecosystem.

TELUS’ Sovereign AI Factory will ensure businesses and researchers have access to the AI computing power required to scale, boost productivity and power innovation. By using this secure, high-performance AI Factory, Canadian businesses can develop local solutions to local challenges, ensuring Canadians can build, train, scale and deploy AI in a secure environment compliant with Canada’s security standards and privacy regulations.

The Sovereign AI Factory marks the next step in TELUS’ long-standing leadership in AI, reinforcing its broader commitment to responsible AI adoption, innovation and productivity growth in Canada. As the first Canadian telecom to sign the Government of Canada’s voluntary AI Code of Conduct in 2023, TELUS has consistently received industry recognition for its dedication to transparency, fairness and accountability in AI development.

TELUS was also the first company in the world to achieve a Privacy by Design certification (ISO 31700-1) for its generative AI-powered customer support tool. As one of only 20 organizations globally to participate in the OECD Pilot Framework for Advanced AI Systems, TELUS has played an active role in shaping global AI governance, contributing key insights to the G7 Working Group on Data & Technology. Additionally, TELUS has been recognized by the Responsible AI Institute for embedding ethical AI practices into its systems, setting a benchmark for responsible AI innovation in Canada and beyond.

With this latest milestone, TELUS is investing in Canada’s AI future — creating jobs, empowering businesses and ensuring we lead the world in the new AI-driven economy. This isn’t just infrastructure; it’s a commitment to building a stronger, more competitive Canada in the digital age.

This TELUS Email Scam Is Interesting… Let Me Tell You Why

Posted in Commentary with tags , on December 18, 2024 by itnerd

Last night I was watching an episode of Terhan on Apple TV+ which is my favourite show on that streaming platform when I got this email on my iPhone:

Now I did my usual check whether this was real or not by checking the email address. And based on this, this email appeared to be real:

I also checked the headers and that confirmed that this was real. And the links in the email went to TELUS as well as evidenced by this example:

So this email meant that someone was trying to log into my TELUS account. That was interesting as I haven’t been a customer with TELUS for almost a year as I moved my cell phone service to Freedom Mobile to cut my telco costs about this time last year. And there should be no billing information stored by TELUS as I always paid my TELUS bill using my credit card the second the bill arrived. I confirmed that by logging into my TELUS account via going directly to the web page and not clicking on any of the links in the email. I did that because even though the email appeared to be real, it could have been an extremely good fake that was fooling me. Another thing to note is that TELUS uses two factor authentication for their accounts which is a good thing as it makes it far less likely that a threat actor could break into your account. Combine that with the fact that I had a very strong password that I would have changed if I could as I could find no way to change my password either via the TELUS website or mobile app, I decided to make this a tomorrow problem.

I woke up this morning and I found this in my junk email:

This is your classic phishing email. As evidenced by the fact that TELUS didn’t send this email:

And the “Pay The Bill” which by the way is language that a major company like TELUS would never use in a customer facing email has a link that isn’t going to TELUS:

Thus I have to wonder if the events of last night are somehow connected to this phishing email? I say that because it seems coincidental that both events would happen within hours of each other. I cannot say for sure, and to add to that I wasn’t able to further investigate this phishing scam as it looks like the web page was taken down. But what is clear is that TELUS customers are being targeted by a threat actor. And it is possible that this threat actor is more sophisticated than the usual phishing email scammers that are out there. Thus you need to stay on your toes to avoid being scammed.
