The iPhone Trojan That Isn’t A iPhone Trojan…Confused? Read On…

Posted in Security with tags , , on September 18, 2008 by itnerd

Now that the iPhone has become so widely popular, it was only a matter of time before somebody tried writing some sort of marware targeted towards iPhone users. According to Sophos, there’s now iPhone trojan in the wild. Here’s the catch, it doesn’t actually run on the iPhone. Instead it promises to be a free iPhone game for the iPhone that you download to a Windows PC. From there it does nefarious things to your PC like take control of it. Mac users are (currently) unaffected by this trojan.

Unpatched Windows Machines Can Be Pwned In 4 Minutes….. Yikes!

Posted in Commentary with tags , on July 15, 2008 by itnerd

This may not be news to some of you, but according to a study done by SANS Institute’s Internet Storm Centre (ISC), an unpatched PC is likely to last a mere four minutes on the Internet before being attacked and compromised.

That’s kind of scary.

How do you avoid this? Use a router (never connect a computer directly to the Internet) and have a personal firewall for extra security. Make sure your anti-virus is up to date. Then install patches as quickly as possible and keep your system fully patched. In fact, some more paranoid IT types that I know argue that you should patch the PC before putting on-line. Not exactly practical for most, but I can see why that advice exists.

Or you can always try one of these alternatives….

Windows XP A Hot Seller On Amazon….Vista, Not So Much

Posted in Commentary with tags , on July 10, 2008 by itnerd

As I write this posting, Windows XP appears to be selling at a rapid clip on Amazon since it was discontinued by Microsoft at the end of June. Just check out their Bestselling Software List which gets updated hourly for proof of this. Windows XP Home is ranked at #16 and Windows XP Pro is #15. To put that in perspective, Vista Home Preminum comes in at #47. But to be fair it is forced upon you pre-installed on every new PC these days. So that might have something to do with the low ranking. Also of note Mac OS X 10.5 is ranked at #7, which perhaps shows that people are giving up on Vista choosing to explore other alternatives.

Windows XP Support Pushed Out To April 2014…. I Wonder Why?

Posted in Commentary with tags , on June 24, 2008 by itnerd

Windows Vista totally sucks isn’t moving off the shelves, so it comes as no shock that Microsoft has extended Windows XP support until April 2014 which includes security patches and other “critical” updates. That’s 13 years after it originally shipped (Microsoft usually kills support for its products after 10 years). According to Microsoft senior VP Bill Veghte:

“Our ongoing support for Windows XP is the result of our recognition that people keep their Windows-based PCs for many years,”

Wrong answer. It’s recognition that Vista isn’t being installed by businesses who are Microsoft’s cash cows, and they have to keep the cash coming in somehow. But wait, there’s more:

“It’s true that we will stop selling Windows XP as a retail packaged product and stop licensing it directly to major PC manufacturers [after June 30],” wrote Veghte. “But customers who still need Windows XP will be able to get it,”

After all Microsoft, you have to sell what people want. Right now that’s not Vista.

This is proof positive that Vista is looking more and more like a failure in the marketplace. No wonder Microsoft is already talking about Windows 7.

Report By Anti-Virus Maker Says Vista Can Be Hit By Malware…… Something Is Fishy Here….

Posted in Commentary with tags , , , on May 20, 2008 by itnerd

As if Microsoft doesn’t have enough issues with its dead on arrival new Vista OS, a new report by Australian anti-virus firm ThreatFire says that Vista can be hit by Malware:

“In total, Vista suffered 121,380 instances of malware from its 190,000 user base, a rate of malware detection per system is proportionally lower than that of XP, which saw 1,319,144 malware infections from a user base of 1,297,828 machines, but it indicates a problem that is worse than Microsoft has been admitting to.”

Now this is usually the part where I bash Microsoft and tell you to run LINUX or buy a Mac. But I’m not going to do that this time. Why? Simple:

  • Malware is not defined anywhere in the article. I know from experience that some “malware” scanners tend to mark even cookies as malware. So one has to wonder if this is what the article is referring to.
  • How many of these “infected” computers had UAC and automated updates turned off? That would make it rather easy for “malware” to sneak onto a Vista machine.

These two items alone make me want to file this under FUD. I’m not a fan of Vista, but it seems that this report is simply a means to sell anti-virus software. This report also creates the impression that Vista is insecure. It might be or it might not be. This report doesn’t exactly do anything to confirm or deny that in any meaningful way. I’d love to see somebody outside of the anti-virus industry do a study like this so that we can answer this question once and for all. At least such a study would be impartial.

How’s XP SP3 Working For You?

Posted in Commentary, Products with tags , , , on May 9, 2008 by itnerd

My experience with XP SP3 has been positive so far. By that I mean that nothing bad has happened. But I’ve read a story on Information Week that says that it is causing “havoc”:

The problems with XP SP3, according to posters on Microsoft’s Windows XP message board, range from spontaneous reboots to outright system crashes.”

Now I’ve upgraded 7 machines to date and I’ve not run into a single issue. Other IT professionals that I’ve spoken to have had no issues as well. So is anybody out there having issues with SP3? Post a comment and let me know.

Vista SP1 And XP SP3 Updates On Again!

Posted in Products with tags , , , on May 6, 2008 by itnerd

I came across this posting noting that Vista SP1 and XP SP3 are now accessible through Windows Update. I’ll give you the usual warnings:

  • Wait a week until all the problems are out in the open.
  • Have a current backup.

On top of that, don’t install either of these if you have Microsoft Dynamics RMS installed.

UPDATE: It’s showing up in Windows Update on my PCs.

If You Feel Brave….. Here’s XP Service Pack 3

Posted in Commentary, Products with tags , , , on April 29, 2008 by itnerd

This is supposed to be appearing in Windows Update today, so I would wait for it to show up there. But if you’ve got the guts, you can download it here right now.

An overview as to what this covers can be downloaded here.

If I were you, I’d wait for braver souls to download it and find all of the problems before you jump in. But if you must jump in now, have a complete backup of your system just in case things go really south.

I’ll try this later tonight on one of my VMs and let you know what I think of it.

Update: Just tried Windows Update. No sign of it.

Update #2: This was just posted to news.com. Apparently it doesn’t play nice with another Microsoft prouct called Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System. The article also gives details as to why it’s not available through Windows Update. I’d say avoid it for now unless you have a current backup.

Update #3: Apparently Vista SP1 has the same problem. According to this post, it has been halted as well.

XP Service Pack 3 Coming Soon… Hope It’s Smaller Than Vista Service Pack 1

Posted in Commentary, Products with tags , , , on April 22, 2008 by itnerd

I was browsing the Microsoft forums last night and came across this posting announcing the fact that Windows XP Service Pack 3 has been released to manufacturing. Microsoft plans on releasing this in two phases:

We are also in the final stages of preparing for release to the web (i.e. you!) on April 29th, via Windows Update and the Microsoft Download Center. Online documentation for Windows XP SP3, such as Microsoft Knowledge Base articles and the Microsoft TechNet Windows XP TechCenter, will be updated then. For customers who use Windows XP at home, Windows XP SP3 Automatic Update distribution for users at home will begin in early summer. “

If you want an overview of what Service Pack 3 will do for you, check out this link. This is planned to be the last Service Pack for XP, unless of course Vista’s adoption rate continue to suck be below expectations.
