Rogers, Shaw And Quebecor Sign Agreement For Quebecor To Buy Freedom Mobile

Rogers put out a press release today stating that they, Shaw and Quebecor have signed a definitive agreement for Quebecor to buy Freedom Mobile, which in turn would in theory allow Rogers to merge with Shaw. Here’s what Rogers had to say about this:

“This Agreement with Quebecor brings us one step closer to completing our merger with Shaw,” said Tony Staffieri, President and CEO of Rogers. “We strongly believe that this divestiture solution addresses the concerns raised by the Commissioner of Competition and the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry and we look forward to securing the outstanding regulatory approvals for our merger with Shaw so that we can start delivering its significant long-term benefits to Canadian consumers and businesses, including improved network resiliency.”

Uh… No. Let’s count the hurdles that Rogers still has to overcome:

  • Last month’s nationwide outage is going to be a huge problem as Rogers would have to convince a whole lot of people that merging with Shaw wouldn’t result in an even bigger outage in the future should one occur.
  • The Freedom Mobile sale to Quebecor needs clearance from the Competition Bureau.
  • This would also require the approval from Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, François-Philippe Champagne.

Given the current climate, I really don’t see how Rogers could expect that this would be smooth sailing. In fact, I would say that this would raise even more red flags for many. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
