Posted in Commentary with tags on November 10, 2014 by itnerd

Here’s something that a lot of us need. A coffee maker enabled with Belkin’s WeMo technology. Meet the Mr. Coffee Smart Coffeemaker.

image004

The Mr. Coffee Smart Coffeemaker features built-in WeMo connectivity and enables consumers to brew, schedule and monitor the device from anywhere using a smartphone or tablet with the WeMo app. You can set a schedule to have coffee ready every weekday morning at 7:30 for the morning commute or hit brew from the dinner table so coffee’s ready just in time for dessert during a dinner party.

With the WeMo app, users can start or monitor the coffeemaker from anywhere. Through the app, users can also schedule a week’s worth of brew times, check to make sure the coffeemaker has a full tank of water or the carafe is in place, set up reminders, and receive alerts when the water filter needs changing, or the coffeemaker needs to be cleaned. The Mr. Coffee Smart Coffeemaker enabled with WeMo also works seamlessly with the entire WeMo family of products and partner products.

In addition to WeMo’s connected capabilities, the Mr. Coffee Smart Coffeemaker is also a state-of-the-art, artisan-style coffeemaker with optimal brewing technology for more flavourful, rich coffee. By heating up to an ideal brewing temperature of 96.1°C (205°F) and a 10-cup, stainless steel thermal carafe, coffee stays hot until the last sip. Additionally, total brewing time for a full pot is just eight minutes, which is 20 per cent faster than the average initial brew speed of the competitive coffeemakers tested.

The Mr. Coffee Smart Coffeemaker enabled with WeMo is available now at Belkin.com for an MSRP of $149.99 US. The WeMo app is available for download now at no cost at the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

Users Of Some Belkin Routers Left Without Internet Access [UPDATED x2]

Posted in Commentary with tags on October 7, 2014 by itnerd

Something that is making the rounds today is the inability of some Internet users around the planet to get onto the Internet using a Belkin router. Users that are affected see a orange or solid amber light instead of the usual color. Apparently the source of the issue is a faulty firmware upgrade caused the devices to lose connectivity, but even users with automatic updates disabled are running into trouble which is weird.

Now Belkin has posted a workaround which involves changing your DNS settings to Google’s public DNS settings while they work on a fix. But this is not looking good from an optics perspective for Belkin. Just take a look at Twitter to see what I mean.

UPDATE: Belkin put out this Tweet a few minutes ago:

UPDATE #2: I just received this statement from my contact at Belkin:

I saw you posted about the issue that was affecting some Belkin routers yesterday. I was going to send you an update on that from Belkin, but it looks like you’ve already got it via Belkin’s tweet.

For whatever reason, the issue only seemed to affect those four Belkin routers and has been fixed. The rest of Belkin’s networking line and all Linksys routers were unaffected. Belkin is taking steps to make sure this doesn’t happen again.

Belkin Announces WeMo LED Starter Set And WeMo Smart LED Bulbs

Posted in Commentary with tags on September 19, 2014 by itnerd

Belkin yesterday  announced availability of the latest addition to their WeMo home automation ecosystem, theWeMo LED Starter Set and WeMo Smart LED Bulbs. The WeMo LED Lighting Starter Set and WeMo Smart LED Bulbs allow you to control WeMo devices anywhere.

As easy as replacing a standard light bulb, the WeMo Smart LED Bulbs work with the WeMo Link to connect to a home’s Wi-Fi network and are controlled via the award-winning WeMo app. With a potential life span of up to 23 years, the long-lasting, energy-efficient bulbs produce the same amount of light as a traditional 60-watt bulb, but only consume 10 watts of energy, making them an excellent value. At 800 lumens and 3000 kelvins, the bulbs give off a bright, pleasing warm white light and are fully dimmable to create the perfect ambiance for any activity or mood.

The WeMo app allows users to customize lighting schedules, create rules based on the sunrise or sunset timing, set a vacation mode for simulated occupancy, as well as turn on a dim-to-sleep feature, which programs the light to gradually dim until completely off over a set period of time. Through the WeMo app, users can also set the WeMo Smart LED Bulbs to be controlled individually or in groups, and set them up to work with other WeMo products such as the WeMo Light Switch and WeMo Insight Switch to give multiple layers of home lighting control in one interface. For example, create a grouping for multiple WeMo Smart LED Bulbs in a single chandelier, or create a kitchen work zone by combining the overhead lights, over-counter pendant lights and other task lighting.

The WeMo LED Starter Set includes two WeMo Smart LED Bulbs and a WeMo Link, which can support up to 50 individual smart bulbs. Individual WeMo Smart LED Bulbs are also sold separately. In addition to the WeMo Smart LED Bulbs, the WeMo Link will work with the upcoming WeMo-enabled ULTRA iQ™ BR30 LED bulbs from OSRAM SYLVANIA that will launch later this fall and give consumers an expanded choice for their smart lighting needs.

Review: Belkin Travel Power Pack 9000

Posted in Products with tags on July 17, 2014 by itnerd

If you want to strike fear into the heart of a smartphone user, put them in a location without an AC outlet nearby with a smartphone that’s about to go dead. You’ll see that they’ll freak out more than  Toronto Mayor Rob Ford a crack addict in rehab. Belkin wants to help those in that position by offering up the Travel Power Pack 9000. It’s a 9,000mAh lithium-ion power pack that is about the size of a deck of cards. It’s also light which makes it easy to stow in your bag. It comes with a pair of USB ports on it that you can use to charge two devices at the same time. One is 1A and one 2.5A. The instruction sheet (and it is just a sheet as there are no other instructions that come with it) states that you should use the 2.5A for tablets and the 1A for smartphones. Next to the power button on the side of the power pack are four blue lights that indicate how much charge is available on the pack. Four lights means it’s fully charged. It takes about 5 hours to charge and you can use the supplied micro USB cable to charge it from your computer’s USB port or an AC outlet using an USB to AC adapter that you’ll have to supply. I chose the latter.

I tested the Belkin Travel Power Pack 9000 by using the 2.5A to charge a Motorola Moto G which was only 39% charged. By using the 2.5A port (which you should only use if your device supports it), it went from 39% to 54% in 20 minutes. In 30 minutes it was up to 62%. By the time an hour rolled around, it was 86% charged. It was fully charged after 90 minutes. Thus if your phone can support charging from the 2.5A, you can get your phone fully charged quickly. My next test was to plug my wife’s iPhone 5 (88% charged) and my iPhone 5S (48% charged) at the same time. The former into the 1A USB connector and the latter into the 2.5A USB connector. I didn’t time how long it charged this time as I wanted to see how much charging power the Belkin Travel Power Pack 9000 would have after this test. By the time that both phones were charged, there were two blue dots indicating at least a 50% charge on the Belkin Travel Power Pack 9000. Next I took a fully discharged Transformer Pad that I reviewed recently and charged it with the remaining charge left in the Travel Power Pack 9000. It got to 48% before it finally ran out of juice. Clearly the Belkin Travel Pack 9000 can charge fast and charge often without you having to hit a power outlet.

Downsides? The Belkin Travel Power Pack 9000 only comes with a micro USB cable. There’s nothing else to plug it into your computer or AC power (hint: the Apple 5W USB Power Adapter works well for this purpose) and Belkin would do well to supply something to allow it to be plugged into the wall. Other than that, I think this is a must get if you travel. Simply supply the cables that you need for the devices that you want to charge, and you’ll be good to go without having to worry about the battery in your smartphone or tablet going dead.

Review: Belkin Mixit Lightning Cable

Posted in Products with tags on July 15, 2014 by itnerd

Frequent readers of this blog will know that I am not a fan of Apple’s Lightning cables because their very questionable quality. And a reader shared his experience with their cables as well. Belkin reached out to me and sent me their new Mixit Lightning Cable. Now these cables are not your average cable as illustrated by this picture:

20140712-103947-38387676.jpg

The first thing that you notice about this cable is the fact that the Lightning connector is made of metal. The second thing that you’ll notice is that the cable is braided. Both of those features are there for more than looks. They make the cable durable because braided cables are much less likely to fray, and the metal connector is less likely to separate. Two issues that plague Apple Lightning cables as evidenced by my experience and the experience of the reader who wrote to me. Another feature I like is the fact that this cable is four feet long. That’s a good length as it is not too long and not too short. Finally it’s a MFI certified cable, so you know it will work with all of your iDevices.

The Belkin Mixit Lightning cables come in three colours and go for $25 CAD. If you want a quality Lightning cable, this is it. It’s easy for me to recommend that iDevice users run out and get them to replace the Apple Lighting cables which aren’t nearly as good as these.

Belking Pulls Sponsorship From Their Pro Cycling Team…. Team Starts Crowd Funding

Posted in Commentary with tags on June 21, 2014 by itnerd

Last year, I wrote about the entry of Belkin into the pro cycling ranks when they sponsored a team starting at last years Tour De France. Their team had a lot of success at that event and at other events last year and this year and the future looked bright. So it came as a shock when Belkin announced that they were pulling out of cycling at the end of the year:

Going forward Belkin International will focus its marketing investment and resources into exciting areas of innovation and leadership such as the Internet of Things, Networking and Digital ecosystem categories. Belkin would like to thank and pay tribute to the cycling community for the warm welcome and the support that has been extended to the brand over the last 12 months. Belkin will always have the highest of regards for the Team and will actively support them throughout the remainder of the season in their search for a new sponsor.

Now the team that Belkin has been sponsoring has a long history in the sport. Plus if you look at this year’s results, they sit mid-table in the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) WorldTour ranking, in ninth place out of 18 teams. The squad has taken two victories in the WorldTour this season, with stage wins in the Volta a Catalunya for Stef Clement and in Paris-Nice for Moreno Hofland. Plus the Tour De France in a couple of weeks will likely be a coming out party for new cycling star Wilco Kelderman, who placed fourth overall in the Criterium du Dauphine which is a tune up race for the Tour De France that covers many of the same roads as the Tour. So their exit is a bit distressing. As a result it’s led to a crowd funding campaign to keep the team on the road:

We are confident that we will find a new sponsor in time, but we want to take things into our own hands via crowd funding. With your support we can finance a part of the TEAM and show potential sponsors that we have loyal supporters we can count on. This offers stability, which will make it more likely for sponsors to join our TEAM.

In the very recent past, when cycling teams lost sponsors, they folded. Riders then had to scramble to find a team if they could. Thus this crowd funding effort is worth watching to see if it will keep one of the longest running cycling teams alive. I hope it works out for them.
