BREAKING: Equifax Pwned…. Info On 143 Million Americans In The Wild

Posted in Commentary with tags on September 7, 2017 by itnerd

This data breach is epic.

Various media outlets are reporting that credit monitoring firm Equifax has been pwned by hackers. The Social Security numbers and other sensitive information of about 143 million Americans is now out there. Which means 143 million Americans are at risk for identity theft. What’s worse is the fact that Equifax discovered the hack July 29, but waited until Thursday to warn consumers.

#EpicFail

The company established a website, https://www.equifaxsecurity2017.com/ , where people can check to see if their personal information may have been stolen. Consumers can also call 866-447-7559 for more information. Experian is also offering free credit monitoring to all U.S. consumers for a year.

This is now the biggest data breach in history. It is far from trivial and I would strongly recommend that you take all possible precautions as the repercussions will be felt for years.

UPDATE: According to the CBC, some Canadian and UK customers have been affected by this epic pwnage.

MD Home Call Acquired By National Home Doctor Service

Posted in Commentary with tags on September 7, 2017 by itnerd

Home Call Doctor visits support a growing trend for patients who may otherwise go to a walk-in clinic or get no care at all. Patients may have no family doctor or can’t get in to see their physician in a timely manner. It brings care right to the door of those with no transportation, such as seniors without a driver’s license or disabled patients who can’t access bus service. In addition, it helps those who can’t leave their homes, like a mom who has no one to babysit her other kids while she takes a sick child to a walk-in clinic or a patient with an injury that limits mobility. Technology is a huge part of what connects the doctor to the patient.

MD Home Call (MDHC), a leader in connecting patients and physicians in the Greater Toronto area for doctor house call and visits has been using technology to connect the two. MDHC is equipped with a custom mobile Electronic Medical Record(EMR) which flows information taken at the call center triage level to physicians and allows the physicians to maintain data on each patient. This advanced process, is very important as many of our patients are bedridden and remain too sick to leave their homes for several days. These patients require follow up from a doctor and MDHC is uniquely positioned to do this thanks to the retention of this medical record. Further, the service is able to provide this data at anytime to the patient should they need it in a future interaction with a long-term family physician or if they are admitted to a hospital where the data may be required to the patient or healthcare provider. In addition, MDHC uses route optimization algorithms in order to maximize the earnings of physician partners (the single most challenging part of this business).

This week, MDHC has been acquired by Crescent Capital backed National Home Doctor Service (NDHS). This acquisition significantly expands the company’s leadership position in the home patient house calls industry. NDHS based is Australia’s largest network of home visiting doctors with offices in Canada. NDHS’ role is to provide treatment of acute, episodic illness and injury to patients at home, when they urgently need to see a doctor, but their GP is closed. By providing this service, they are supporting the family General Practitioner by ensuring their patients have 24 hours access to quality primary care. Through the acquisition, NDHS will bring the same quality care to Canada.

iPhone Resale Economy Stats From eBay Canada

Posted in Commentary with tags on September 7, 2017 by itnerd

With the iPhone 8 model set to release shortly, here’s some data from eBay Canada about the iPhone economy that’s created around launch time:

While eBay is a popular place for Canadians to buy and sell iPhones all year long (in the last year alone, a device was both bought and sold by a Canadian approximately every 10 minutes), an uptick in activity is noted around the release cycle of a new iPhone model.

Looking back at 2016, shortly after the iPhone 7 launch, a previous generation iPhone was bought or sold by a Canadian every 5 minute on eBay. Also, iPhone listings by Canadians increased by more than 30% from the beginning of August to the end of October last year.

Here are some additional interesting stats:

  • Over the last three years, the average sale price of the previous generation iPhone available to Canadians on eBay dipped by nearly 10% the month after a new generation was released
  • The conditions of iPhones Canadians are buying and selling on eBay are ~20% new, ~70% used, ~10% refurbished
  • To-date, the most popular iPhone model purchased by Canadians on eBay is the iPhone 5s
  • The most popular iPhone model sold by Canadians on eBay, is the iPhone 4s
  • The current average selling prices for the following iPhone models available to Canadians on eBay are:
    • iPhone 7 Plus – $705 CAD
    • iPhone 7 – $616 CAD
    • iPhone 6s Plus – $368 CAD
    • iPhone 6s – $251 CAD
    • iPhone 6 Plus – $258 CAD
    • iPhone 6 – $173 CAD

In Depth: Xref

Posted in Commentary with tags on September 7, 2017 by itnerd

Employers these days are on the hunt for the best talent. But how do you know if you actually found that talent? After you interview the person and get a sense of what they’re all about, you likely do a reference check. And that’s where the problem begins. I say that because there’s really no way of knowing if the reference is real, fake, or “fluffed up.” On top of that, humans do a poor job of trying to assess the quality of a reference. So, wouldn’t it be great if you could check references and get accurate assessments on the quality of those references as easily as you use the Internet to find candidates?

Xref which has its headquarters in Sydney Australia (but if you will indulge me in a bit of national pride, I will note that they just opened their latest office here in Toronto Canada), has the solution for you. Its SAAS based platform allows employers to collect and assess references painlessly in three easy steps:

  1. The employer adds the candidate to Xref to request references.
  2. The candidate shares the details of their references.
  3. References respond with answers to pre-defined questions.

If you’re more of a visual person, here’s a video:

So you’re likely using what the big deal is. Well, Xref has an extra trick up its sleeve. It leverages an algorithm which examines reference responses and rates feedback positive, negative or neutral. This has the following advantages:

  1. It offers a new method of data analysis which interprets the referee’s ‘tone of voice’ for the employer.
  2. It reduces the chance that a reference is misinterpreted and provides a new indicator to detect the possibility of fraud.

So in short, it takes the human element out of the equation and allows the employer to make an informed decision. Plus it reduces fraud and makes the process painless enough that you get more responses. In fact Xref collects up to 60 per cent more data, five times faster than traditional reference checking methods. I should also mention that everything is secure from end to end. That’s pretty impressive. But to illustrate what a game changer Xref, I’d like to relate a story that was told to me by Timothy Griffiths who is the Co-founder and CTO of Xref. An employer who found what the thought was the perfect candidate asked for references. The good news is that the employer got all the references that were asked for back in record time. The bad news…. Or perhaps better news if you were the employer in this case was that Xref was able to determine that the references were fake, largely because they submitted seconds apart at 6AM. Needless to say, the candidate didn’t get the job and the employer dodged a bullet.

One other thing that I’d like to point out about Xref is that it integrates into the talent recruitment platform that you have. Here’s what Xref presently supports:

  • Oracle Taleo
  • iCIMS
  • Bullhorn
  • Smart Recruiters
  • Equifax
  • Expr3ss!

And if there’s a talent recruitment platform that isn’t on the list, Xref can likely put in the time to make their product work with whatever product you have.

Finally, I’d like to illustrate who uses Xref:

  • Chelsea Football Club
  • Revera
  • WilsonCTS
  • APG & Co

Clearly they have confidence in Xref, which means that so should you. Quite simply, Xref is a game changer. It will change the way you hire staff because you will find more quality hires than you have in the past. If you’re in the business of hiring people, you cannot afford not to give Xref a good hard look.
