Koïos Intelligence Concludes $6.5M Round Of Funding

Posted in Commentary with tags on May 4, 2023 by itnerd

Koïos Intelligence, a Quebec-based start-up that provides insurance professionals with a conversational assistant powered by artificial intelligence (AI), announced today to have concluded a $6.5 millionfinancing round with the participation of Propulia Capital, Canada Economic Development, Export Development Canada, Caisse Desjardins des Technologies and other private investors, who are convinced that natural language processing is poised to revolutionize the operations of organizations. This financing includes equity and other financial instruments such as debt instruments and call options.

This new investment will allow Koïos to rapidly expand into new markets, while continuing to develop its virtual assistant, making it easier than ever for insurers to do business.

Revolutionizing the way people shop for insurance policies and update insurance contracts

By combining insights from experts in insurance, finance, and AI, Koïos identified a disconnect between the way brokers currently sell insurance, and the way consumers want to buy it. In fact, in 2022, the overwhelming majority of insurance sales were still done over the phone or in person and required an average of over an hour. However, new generations of consumers have increasingly sophisticated expectations and, according to a survey conducted by Koïos Intelligence, 75% of them expect a response from an agent in less than 5 minutes. Moreover, 65% of consumers prefer online platforms to call centers when shopping for insurance.

Koïos’ Olivo conversational assistant is AI-powered and acts as a virtual intermediary between the insurance broker and the consumer, allowing the consumer to shop for different coverage options, and even complete insurance purchases, all while asking the virtual assistant questions. Olivo is interconnected with leading insurance industry systems such as Applied and the Centre for Study of Insurance Operations (CSIO). These integrations allow Koïos Intelligence to be part of the insurance value chain and to retain clients such as PMA Insurance, Tardif Group Insurance, Intact’s partners in the Virage Group, and Rogers Insurance, one of the largest insurance brokers in Canada. This connectivity streamlines the pre-purchase, purchase and post-purchase processes for all types of insurance products through data automation.

The standardization of processes allows for greater efficiency throughout the value chain, a 30% reduction in administrative costs for insurance brokers or agents, and a potential 400% increase in sale conversion rates. In parallel, Olivo offers consumers fast and personalized service, available 24/7 in the language of their choice with a 30% shorter waiting time than if they had to contact a call centre.

Olivo uses multimodal AI, a type of artificial intelligence in which multiple channels of information transmission (text, voice, image) are used to train interlocking algorithms to better understand consumer interactions.

ServiceNow and Hugging Face release StarCoder

Posted in Commentary with tags on May 4, 2023 by itnerd

ServiceNow today announced the release of one of the world’s most responsibly developed and strongest‑performing open‑access large language model (LLM) for code generation. Led by ServiceNow Research and Hugging Face, the open‑access, open‑science, and open‑governance 15 billion parameter StarCoder LLM makes generative AI more transparent and accessible to enable responsible innovation at scale.

The StarCoder model is designed to level the playing field so developers from organizations of all sizes can harness the power of generative AI and maximize the business impact of automation with the proper governance, safety, and compliance protocols. This new LLM marks the next major milestone in the BigCode Project, an ambitious initiative to develop state‑of‑the‑art AI systems for code in an open and responsible manner with the support of the open‑scientific AI research community.

Trained with a trillion tokens of permissively licensed source code covering over 80 programming languages from BigCode’s The Stack v1.2 dataset, StarCoder can be deployed to bring pair‑programing like generative AI to applications with capabilities like text‑to‑code and text‑to‑workflow. With this, StarCoder gives professional software engineers the power to tackle the most complex programming challenges and empowers citizen developers to build new software regardless of technical ability—accelerating AI innovation at scale. The model will be released with open‑access on the Hugging Face platform Code Open RAIL‑M license to permit royalty‑free distribution. Unlike traditional open‑source software released without use case restrictions, BigCode releases the model with a responsible AI model license that includes use case restrictions that apply to modifications of the model, and applications using the model ‑ for example, to restrict the models from being used to generate or distribute malicious code to harm electronic systems. Supporting code has been open sourced on the BigCode project’s GitHub.

ServiceNow Research and Hugging Face, which works on some of the world’s largest AI and LLM initiatives, launched the joint BigCode Project in September 2022. The project continues to operate as an open scientific collaboration, as the two companies harness the collective brainpower and resources from the open‑source community through BigCode working groups, task forces, and meetups.

Through partnerships with leading research organizations like Hugging Face, ServiceNow is fueling the development of state‑of‑the‑art generative AI with socially responsible contributions back to the AI research and development community. This includes the company’s partnership with Mila, the Quebec AI Institute, to bridge the demands of advanced AI research. The Mila collaboration will nurture ties with academia by providing the broader research community with enterprise AI experience. ServiceNow also continues to invest internally in AI research and development to build AI‑powered experiences that are reliable and safe, and that users can trust.

Beyond key partnerships and collaborations, ServiceNow is continuously embedding enterprise AI capabilities across the Now Platform to fulfill its mission of being the world’s most intelligent platform for end‑to‑end digital transformation. In the last three years alone, ServiceNow has expanded its portfolio with several notable AI acquisitions, including Attivio, Element AI, and Hitch Works, bringing practical, purpose‑built AI capabilities to the Now Platform. Most recently, ServiceNow introduced new AI‑based tools within the Now Platform Utah release to help organizations maximize efficiency, accelerate ROI, and create more simplified, connected experiences.

Twitter Is Now Hiding Who Paid Elon $8 A Month ($11 On iOS)

Posted in Commentary with tags on May 4, 2023 by itnerd

I guess the fact that Elon Musk has gotten so few signups for Twitter Blue and so many people dunk on him daily over Twitter Blue along with the whole legacy verification fiasco that it’s led Elon to do this according to Dexerto, which is a site that specializes in Influencers, gaming and esports news.:

In the past, the old blue check mark message said the user had “subscribed to Twitter Blue.” The one above that simply says the account is simply “verified.”This I believe is an attempt to hide who has paid for Twitter Blue and who hasn’t as the lack of signups for Twitter Blue is likely embarrassing to Elon. Thus he’s trying to pretend that the problem doesn’t exist.

Fun fact: Sticking your head in the sand doesn’t make a problem go away. Ever. Elon might want to keep that in mind.

Twitter Appears To Be Taking A Dirt Nap At The Moment

It seems that Twitter has issues at the moment based on this screenshot that I just took from Down Detector:

From what I can tell, it seems that some people have issues with Twitter getting this sort of message:

Meanwhile other Twitter users are fine. Clearly there’s something going on, and it will be interesting to see how long this lasts, and how Elon reacts to this.

Hackers Exploit PayPal’s Email Functionality To Steal Donations

Posted in Commentary with tags on May 4, 2023 by itnerd

PayPal provides a convenient way for people to send legitimate messages such as invoices and billing reminders. However, its ease of use has caught the attention of hackers, who are now exploiting the platform to send phishing emails that solicit fake donations.

Avanan, a Check Point Software Company, has released an attack brief detailing how hackers are targeting end-users with a fake firefighter fundraising scam. Avanan’s cybersecurity researchers have analyzed the techniques used by these cybercriminals to deceive their victims.

In this scam, hackers create seemingly legitimate PayPal invoices that solicit donations for a fictional firefighter organization. They send these phishing emails directly from PayPal, making the messages appear genuine and more likely to pass security checks. However, careful examination reveals inconsistencies, such as the use of a non-existent organization or a phone number unassociated with a legitimate business.

You can read the attack brief here.
