84% Of North American Organizations Expect To Experience A Breach Of Customer Records In The Next Year: Trend Micro

Posted in Commentary with tags on August 4, 2021 by itnerd

Trend Micro Incorporated today revealed that the risk of cyber attacks has increased in the last year. According to a new survey, 80% of global organizations report they are likely to experience a data breach that impacts customer data in the next 12 months.

The findings come from Trend Micro’s biannual Cyber Risk Index (CRI) report, which measures the gap between respondents’ cybersecurity preparedness versus their likelihood of being attacked. In the first half of 2021 the CRI surveyed more than 3,600 businesses of all sizes and industries across North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America.

Read a full copy of the report, produced by the Ponemon Institute, here:https://www.trendmicro.com/cyberrisk.

The CRI is based on a numerical scale of -10 to 10, with -10 representing the highest level of risk. The current global index stands at -0.42, a slight increase on last year which indicates an “elevated” risk.

Organizations ranked the top three negative consequences of an attack as customer churn, lost IP and critical infrastructure damage/disruption.

Key findings from the report include:

  • 86% said it was somewhat to very likely that they’d suffer serious cyber-attacks in the next 12 months, compared to 83% last time
  • 24% suffered 7+ cyber attacks that infiltrated networks/systems, versus 23% in the previous report.
  • 21% had 7+ breaches of information assets, versus 19% in the previous report.
  • 20% of respondents said they’d suffered 7+ breaches of customer data over the past year, up from 17% in the last report.

Among the top two infrastructure risks was cloud computing. Global organizations gave it a  6.77, ranking it as an elevated risk on the index’s 10-point scale. Many respondents admitted they spend “considerable resources” managing third party risks like cloud providers.

The top cyber risks highlighted in the report were as follows:

  • Man-in-the-middle attacks
  • Ransomware
  • Phishing and social engineering
  • Fileless attack
  • Botnets

The top security risks to infrastructure remain the same as last year, and include organizational misalignment and complexity, as well as cloud computing infrastructure and providers. In addition, respondents identified customer turnover, lost intellectual property and disruption or damages to critical infrastructure as key operational risks for organizations globally.

The main challenges for cybersecurity preparedness include limitations for security leaders who lack the authority and resources to achieve a strong security posture, as well as organizations struggling to enable security technologies that are sufficient to protect their data assets and IT infrastructure.

SquadCast Cloud Studio Powered By Dolby For PodCasters

Posted in Commentary with tags on August 4, 2021 by itnerd

SquadCast, the leading cloud recording studio (CRS) platform, today announced version 4.5, which includes Dolby.io noise cancellation, one-click audio mastering, a new category-first integration API, and new workflow features among other enhancements. SquadCast’s SaaS subscription tool can also now connect and record up to 10 people in a recording session — a dramatic increase over the previous maximum of four participants.

SquadCast is already a dominant player in podcast production, growing nearly 600% in revenue and customer acquisition in 2020. With its state-of-the-art recording capabilities, Cloud Studio can be used to record video interviews, audiobooks, and podcasts. The company expects its new, industry-first features to fuel record growth and a larger market share after an unprecedented year for online collaboration by remote creative professionals during the pandemic.

According to The State of Podcast Interviews 2020SquadCast.fm market share in the CRS category grew 141% in 2020, making it the fastest-growing podcast interview platform. The demand for video recording in all podcasts went up 12% in 2020, with 36% of all podcasts using video.

SquadCast Cloud Studio provides the following new features for content creators:

  • Ten participants can join in a recording session — the highest number of participants in any CRS platform.
  • Real-time noise cancellation via Dolby.io integration means better quality than ever. The new noise cancellation feature adds dynamic audio leveling and sound clarity with echo reduction within an immersive sound experience.
  • SquadCast’s new API empowers integrations with popular tools (via Zapier), such as Calendly, Dropbox, Descript, or custom solutions to bolster recorded content within the podcast and larger tech ecosystem.
  • Better workflow features for every stage of the process include: one-click audio mastering, screen recording, screen share, transparent connectivity and enhanced network resilience, a “green room” soundcheck, pronoun options, and recording-time analytics.

Standard video-conferencing tools offer low-quality production for podcasts

Well-known meeting platforms such as Zoom or Skype weren’t designed to offer high-fidelity audio or full HD video for professional content production. Typical video conferencing platforms process audio over the Internet, so recordings are vulnerable to poor connections, which can lead to issues such as audio drift or incomplete audio files. SquadCast v4.5 also offers new video display options if network access is limited.

SquadCast’s patent-pending progressive uploading prevents audio drift

SquadCast is the leading podcast recording service that offers Dolby.io integration and progressive uploading. Dolby.io noise cancellation makes everyone on a show sound like they’re in the same room together. Progressive uploading means that audio and video files are uploaded in the background, in real-time, while also being recorded locally (with isolated tracks for each participant). Customers will never lose recordings due to spotty or dropped Internet connections because those are always saved in Cloud Studio.

When a recording is done, the host can immediately download all audio and video files directly from SquadCast in a variety of formats. SquadCast’s cloud tools enable speedy post-production and easy collaboration among virtual production teams.

SquadCast’s cloud studio is used by independent, professional, and enterprise podcast creators to record remotely on Chrome, Firefox, Brave, Opera, and Edge browsers and on the Android mobile platform. SquadCast Cloud Studio version 4.5 includes high-quality recordings for all plans, which start at $20/month, with additional features available on premium plans.

Hackers Pwn System For Booking COVID-19 Shots In Italy

Posted in Commentary with tags on August 3, 2021 by itnerd

Hackers have pwned the IT systems of the company that manages COVID-19 vaccination appointments for the Lazio region surrounding Rome, the regional government said on Sunday:

“A powerful hacker attack on the region’s CED (database) is under way,” the region said in a Facebook posting. It said all systems had been deactivated, including those of the region’s health portal and vaccination network, and warned the inoculation programme could suffer a delay. “It is a very powerful hacker attack, very serious… everything is out. The whole regional CED is under attack,” Lazio region’s health manager Alessio D’Amato said.

This is another example of why every organization needs strong defenses against hackers, and those defenses are effectively mandatory. Given the times that we live in, this attack can have far reaching consequences for those who are affected by this. And that’s not at all cool. Thus it’s time that every organization step up their game when it comes to cybersecurity.

French Intelligence Confirms That The NSO Group’s Spyware Has Been Found On The Phones Of Reporters

Posted in Commentary with tags on August 3, 2021 by itnerd

French intelligence investigators have confirmed that Pegasus spyware has been found on the phones of three journalists, including a senior member of staff at the country’s international television station France 24. Pegasus is the spyware that is developed, marketed and licensed to governments around the world by NSO Group. The malware has the capability to infect billions of phones running either iOS or Android operating systems. It enables operators of the spyware to extract messages, photos and emails, record calls and secretly activate microphones:

It is the first time an independent and official authority has corroborated the findings of an international investigation by the Pegasus project — a consortium of 17 media outlets, including the Guardian. Forbidden Stories, a Paris-based nonprofit media organization, and Amnesty International initially had access to a leaked list of 50,000 numbers that, it is believed, have been identified as those of people of interest by clients of Israeli firm NSO Group since 2016, and shared access with their media partners.

France’s national agency for information systems security (Anssi) identified digital traces of NSO Group’s hacking spyware on the television journalist’s phone and relayed its findings to the Paris public prosecutor’s office, which is overseeing the investigation into possible hacking. Anssi also found Pegasus on telephones belonging to Lenaig Bredoux, an investigative journalist at the French investigative website Mediapart, and the site’s director, Edwy Plenel. Forbidden Stories believes at least 180 journalists worldwide may have been selected as people of interest in advance of possible surveillance by government clients of NSO.

Le Monde reported that the France 24 journalist, based in Paris, had been selected for “eventually putting under surveillance.” Police experts discovered the spyware had been used to target the journalist’s phone three times: in May 2019, September 2020 and January 2021, the paper said. Bredoux told the Guardian that investigators had found traces of Pegasus spyware on both her and Plenel’s mobile phones. She said the confirmation of long-held suspicions that they had been targeted contradicted the repeated denials of those who were believed to be behind the attempt to spy on them.

The evidence keeps mounting that The NSO Group’s spyware is out there being used for any and all purposes. Which contradicts The NSO Group’s claim that if you’re not a bad guy you have nothing to worry about. That’s completely unacceptable and needs to be addressed by going after not only The NSO Group, but those who use this spyware.

Guest Post: 65% of all DDoS attacks target US and UK Says Atlas VPN

Posted in Commentary with tags on August 3, 2021 by itnerd

Distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks are common for cybercriminals who want to disrupt online-dependent businesses.

According to the data analyzed by the Atlas VPN team, 65% of all distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks are directed at the US or UK. Computers and the internet industry is the favorite among cybercriminals.

The United States was a target for 35% of all DDoS attacks in June 2021. Cybercriminals launched DDoS attacks against Amazon Web Services, Google, and other prominent US-based companies in the past.

The United Kingdom comes second as it fell victim to 29% of all DDoS attacks. As the UK has many huge businesses, they often are targeted by hackers for valuable data or even a ransom.

China was threatened by 18% of all DDoS attacks in June 2021.  Assaults from and to China happen primarily due to political reasons, to interrupt some government agency.

Japan and Germany were each struck by about 3% of all DDoS attacks.

Cybersecurity writer and researcher at Atlas VPN William Sword shares his thoughts on DDoS attacks:

“DDoS attacks are a severe threat. They lead to the interruption of the website or service, which could cause massive financial damages to the business. To stop the assault, hackers often request a ransom.”

Clear DDoS attack target

Some businesses are more heavily targeted due to the damage their service stoppage would cause if hackers disrupted their service.

The most attacked industry was the computers and internet sector, targeted by 83% of all DDoS attacks. Domain providers, web hosts, and internet service providers often become the victims of DDoS attacks.

The games industry is the second most attacked sector as they suffered 9% of all DDoS attacks. Some gamers launch DDoS attacks against other players to lower their connection speed and gain a competitive advantage.

Gambling sites experienced 6% of all DDoS attacks in June 2021. Often casinos hire cybercriminals to disrupt their competitor’s businesses. Almost 2% of all DDoS assaults targeted the business sector, while hackers attacked the finance sector nearly 1% of the time.
