Dell Technologies and AT&T are jointly exploring the development of key open infrastructure technology areas for the next-generation network edge that will be required by service providers to support new use cases and service opportunities in a cloud-oriented 5G world.

Realizing the full potential of 5G innovation

5G is not simply an evolution from 4G. 5G requires massive transformation. It demands new, distributed architectures that use software-defined, disaggregated and open infrastructure to automate the delivery and management of mobile services and new analytics-driven telemetry to ensure consistent service levels.

The goal of edge computing is to move compute closer to the end user and applications, creating a low-latency environment for a new class of cloud-native applications. Combining edge computing and 5G extends cloud and “IT-centric” requirements beyond traditional fixed-function hardware to deliver more dynamic, agile edge compute, storage and networking solutions on an unprecedented scale. To capitalize on the new business opportunities that edge computing and 5G will create, communication service providers need open, validated, industry-standard architectures, combined with software-defined networking (SDN), network functions virtualization (NFV), cloud-native applications, and Multi-access edge computing (MEC).

Combining their respective expertise, Dell Technologies and AT&T will collaborate in the open source community to:

• Align on an overall vision of network disaggregation and accelerate the deployment of open infrastructure and AT&T Network Cloud utilizing Airship – a collection of loosely coupled, but interoperable, open source tools that declaratively automate cloud provisioning and life-cycle management utilizing containers as the unit of software delivery
• Catalyze the broader Airship community to accelerate Airship toward a 2.0 release, delivering streamlined aggregator of best-of-breed open technologies for declaratively deploying and managing Kubernetes environments and cloud software
• Jointly develop and enhance additional open source efforts including Metal3-io and OpenStack Ironic, and integrate the Kubernetes Cluster API
• Deliver open source automation capabilities across the stack – from bare metal to network to storage – on Dell Technologies infrastructure

Today at the 10th annual Dell Women Entrepreneur Network Summit, Dell announced findings of the 2019 Women Entrepreneur Cities (WE Cities) Index, ranking 50 global cities on their ability to foster growth for women entrepreneurs. Building on annual research since 2010, Dell ranks cities based on the impact of local policies, programs and characteristics in addition to national laws and customs to help improve support for women entrepreneurs and the overall economy.

Building on 10 years of research on women entrepreneurs, Dell partnered with IHS Markit to research and rank 50 cities on five important characteristics, including access to: Capital, Technology, Talent, Culture and Markets. These pillars were organized into two groups — operating environment and enabling environment. The overall rating is based on 71 indicators; 45 of which have a gender-based component. Individual indicators were weighted based on four criteria: relevance, quality of underlying data, uniqueness in the index and gender component.

All 50 cities made progress since 2017, however some cities made bigger strides than others and the race to the top inevitably left some cities behind. Highlights include:

• The San Francisco Bay Area out ranked New York for the No. 1 spot this year, largely in part because the Bay Area is one of the best places for women to gain access to capital. It also moved from 6th place to 2nd place in Culture, illustrating that the number of role models and public dialogue around eliminating the ‘bro culture’ is making an impact.
• Out of a total of 100 possible points, the No. 1 ranked San Francisco Bay Area scored only 63.7. That’s evidence that there is still much work to do to level the field for women – and validates the need for this kind of research and outreach to policymakers to move the needle for female founders.
• Lack of funding, high-cost of living, low representation of women in leadership roles, and the lack government led policies that support women entrepreneurs were among the barriers, globally.
• Thirty out of 50 cities improved on more than half of their indicators, with Latin America and Europe seeing the highest percentage of their cities move up.
• The most-improved cities represent nearly every region, which indicates how broad-based the improvements have been around the world.
• Mexico City had the greatest improvement ranking No. 45 in 2017, moving up to No. 29 this year. In particular, the city increased women in education, at top business schools and in its legislature, and also increased corporate vendor procurement programs and access to capital for women entrepreneurs via crowdfunding campaigns.
• Toronto ranked No. 9, while Vancouver was No. 11; both seen as extremely desirable cities to foster women entrepreneurship. Favourable government policies, an increase in funding and access to capital, and a high skill set all contributed to these great scores.

Advocating for Women Entrepreneurs

The 2017 to 2019 WE Cities Index results highlight the successes and challenges that each city faces, and where cities can learn best practices from one another. These key learnings, if supported by local governments, can add up to big changes for women-owned businesses, globally.

Based on the findings and comparison between the 2017-2019 indices, Dell has developed a set of

WE Cities Policy Recommendations focused on three areas, including:

• Access to and the development of financial and human capital.
• Private and public sectors role in increasing access to local and global networks and markets.
• How government and business leaders can help women entrepreneurs thrive in the changing-face of technology.

Dell partnered with IHS Markit — a leading source of insight and analytics that shape today’s business landscape — to launch this first-of-its-kind, global research that will measure a city’s ability to attract and support high-potential women entrepreneurs.

Research for WE Cities began during the 2016 DWEN Research Symposium chaired by Dr. David Ricketts from the Technology and Entrepreneurship Center at Harvard. The research symposium brought together 40 global thought leaders, women entrepreneurs, academics and media to develop insights for the model. Key takeaways from the conversations at the Symposium included:

• Access to capital is still the No. 1 challenge that women entrepreneurs face, although the numbers are showing a slight improvement
• Creating robust ecosystems with incubators, accelerators and mentors makes a world of difference for entrepreneurs — it’s all about the network
• Cultural norms and their policy implications put serious binds on female entrepreneurs
• Talent, both in terms of the entrepreneurs’ own talent, including education and experience, and having access to a skilled staff also resonated as highly important

The successful pilot of the 2016 Index led to the scaling for the 2017 Index to include 50 cities and the re- measuring and ranking for 2019.

Dell Technologies is announcing that it will complete or exceed over 75% of the goals outlined in its 2020 Legacy of Good plan ahead of schedule. These achievements demonstrate how the company has scaled sustainability, empowered people and established technology as an accelerator for positive customer and societal outcomes for years to come.

Final progress report on 2020 Plan
In 2013, Dell Technologies introduced the 2020 Legacy of Good with ambitious sustainability and social goals to put its technology and expertise to work to do the most good for people and the planet. The final report, which was released today, details how Dell Technologies advanced progress has led many initiatives to solve complex global problems. Goals completed or that the company has made significant progress against so far include:

• Recovered more than 2 billion pounds of used electronics via responsible recycling through programs such as Dell Reconnect, a partnership with Goodwill, and Dell’s Asset Resale and Recycling Services (achieved 2020 goal ahead of schedule).
• Reused 100 million pounds of recycled content, plastic and other sustainable materials in Dell Technologies’ new products (achieved 2020 goal ahead of schedule).
• Developed and maintained sustainability initiatives in 100% of Dell Technologies-operated buildings (achieved 2020 goal ahead of schedule).
• Reduced wastewater discharge in manufacturing by 4.56M cubic meters.
• Reduced 64% of product portfolio energy intensity footprint.
• Delivered 5 million service hours to communities globally through initiatives that focused on but were not limited to: Skills-based volunteering, mentoring students, and developing new non-profit technology solutions (achieved 2020 goal of service hours).
• Enabled eligible team members to participate in flexible work options and increased global participation to 60% (surpassed 2020 goal of 50%).
• Achieved 89% or higher favorable responses in team member satisfaction globally (surpassed 2020 goal of 75%).
• Allocated more than $3 billion dollars annually to diverse suppliers within supply chain programs and continued to qualify for the Billion Dollar Roundtable.
• Rolled out company-wide foundational learning program focused on mitigating unconscious bias called Many Advocating Real Change (MARC) – with 100% participation from all executives globally.
• Recognized by LinkedIn as a 2019 Top Company, by FairyGodBoss as a Top 10 Tech Company according to women working at Dell Technologies, by the Human Rights Campaign’s 2019 Corporate Equality Index as one of the best places to work for LGBTQ Equality (15 consecutive years) and by Ethisphere® Institute as a World’s Most Ethical Company (6 consecutive years).

A roadmap for progress

The 2020 Legacy of Good plan set a strong foundation for Dell Technologies’ new 2030 social impact vision, Progress Made Real , which focuses in on three key areas: advancing sustainability, cultivating inclusion, and transforming lives with technology. Foundational to the vision is a commitment to upholding strong ethics and privacy. This new vision accelerates a path toward 2030 in an effort to begin tackling the greatest challenges facing Dell Technologies’ business and the world over the next decade. The company plans to release specific goals over the coming year and will continue to demonstrate transparent reporting practices.

Advancing Sustainability

• Dell Technologies believes business plays a critical role in protecting and enriching our planet together with our customers, suppliers and communities. Looking toward 2030, the company will continue to accelerate the circular economy, reduce the impact of Dell’s operations, support customers’ efforts to reduce environmental impacts, and champion the many people who build our products.
• After a successful e-waste tracker pilot in partnership with Basel Action Network (BAN), Dell Technologies now makes global tracking technologies part of its existing electronics disposition partner audit program. The pilot program revealed some vulnerabilities in the downstream recycling process, which helped Dell Technologies to quickly take corrective action to address the operational gap.
• Dell recently launched a process to use recycled material,Polyvinyl Butyral (rPVB), from car windshields to create the protective, waterproof lining of Dell laptop bags and backpacks. The company is also using an innovative method of solution dyeing for these backpacks, which results in 90% less wastewater and 29% less energy, while generating 62% fewer CO2 emissions compared to typical piece-dyeing. The first bags and backpacks with rPVB began shipping in February and are forecasted to avoid approximately 74,000 pounds of landfill waste per month.
• Additionally, in partnership with suppliers Seagate and Teleplan (a storage device recycling/recovery specialist), Dell identified a new closed-loop process to recover the rare earth magnets from recovered enterprise equipment. The magnets are reformed for reuse in new hard-disk drives. In the initial pilot program, we are using the reformed magnets in 25,000 Seagate hard drives for our Dell Latitude 5000 series laptop.  Reusing rare earth metals helps us avoid the need to mine the earth, which can cause environmental damage and health concerns for local communities.

Cultivating Inclusion

In the midst of a talent shortage, closing the diversity gap is critical to meeting future talent needs and for reflecting new perspectives of a global customer base. Dell Technologies is actively building on several non-traditional hiring program pilots to broaden the company’s talent pipeline. Pilots include:

• The neurodiversity hiring program provides training and possible full-time career opportunities for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder. In partnership with HMEA, The Arc of the Capital Area and Neurodiverisity in the Workplace, Dell Technologies’ program removes barriers that may limit an individual from showcasing their true abilities and potential during the typical job interview process. The pilot expanded from Massachusetts to Texas in April, 2019.
• Re-entry programs like Dell Career Restart offer a re-entry experience for individuals who have been out of the workforce for a year or more, and leverages their previous career experience in a supportive environment. The company launched pilots in the U.S. and India.
• Skilling and re-skilling programs include Dell Technologies’ partnership with Northeastern University’sAlignProgram, which enables students from diverse backgrounds to transition into a technology career through intensive coursework to earn a master’s degree in computer science. Project Immersion provides undergraduates at Minority Serving Institutions and Historically Black Colleges & Universities with skills for the digital future. Additionally, Dell Technologies’ distance education Laboratory for People with Disabilities (LE@D) online learning platform, teaches technology-based vocational skills to individuals with motor, hearing or other disabilities in Brazil.
• Dell Technologies is also committed to addressing systemic challenges with diversity and inclusion. The company advocates for inclusive public policies and is a member of strategic coalitions like CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion, and was also a founding member of the Reboot Representation Tech Coalition.

Transforming Lives with Technology

• Harnessing the power of technology enables limitless possibilities for advancing human progress and solving complex societal challenges. Dell Technologies is committed to applying its portfolio and partnerships to create a future capable of fully realizing human potential.
• Dell Technologies continued to expand its solar learning labs to help bridge the educational gap in areas that lack access to consistent energy and technology in partnership with Computer Aid International. These labs are created by transforming shipping containers into classrooms with Dell Wyse Thin Client workstations managed by an air-cooled PowerEdge server for up to 20 students. With solar panels to generate electricity, the container can be deployed in remote locations. Dell Technologies has already funded 18 labs in six countries around the world. Microsoft has recently joined in this collaborative effort, awarding Computer Aid with a Technology for Social Impact grant to further provide technology access through the solar learning labs.
• To fight pediatric cancer, Dell Technologies’ donated $30 million dollars over 6 years to Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) through a partnership designed to use technology solutions and employee volunteerism. Through Dell’s technology, TGen increased computational hours by almost 4x, allowing researchers and doctors to identify treatments faster, by turning a patient’s vast DNA and RNA sequencing data into insights.

Many Dell PCs come with troubleshooting software called SupportAssist. But according to this advisory, it has a security flaw that can be exploited by malware and rogue logged-in users to gain administrator rights. And seeing that Dell has popped SupportAssist on millions of PCs, the possibilities for epic pwnage are endless. Thus to avoid being a victim, you need to ensure that you’re running Dell SupportAssist for Business PCs version 2.0.1 and Dell SupportAssist for Home PCs version 3.2.2.

But the fun doesn’t end there. Dell doesn’t actually make SupportAssist based on how I read the advisory. A company named PC Doctor actually makes the software. And they sell it to companies like Dell. Thus it is highly likely that other OEMs have the same issue, and the number of computers that are at risk is likely much higher. Thus expect other OEMs to be putting out similar warnings shortly. Not to mention that PC Doctor likely has some explaining to do to these OEMs about how they could screw up on this level.

At ISC High Performance 2019, Dell Technologies is announcing details of new solutions, reference designs, customer collaborations and partnerships designed to advance and simplify the deployment of artificial intelligence (AI), deep learning (DL) and high performance computing (HPC).

According to HPC analyst and research firm, Hyperion Research, 2018 was another high growth year for HPC, with global industry revenues reaching $27.7 billion and Dell EMC growing at 13% over the past five years—more than double the industry rate.¹ Big data, AI, DL, and machine learning (ML) are expected to bring new opportunities for organizations, especially as HPC and AI continue to converge for many HPC users.

Dell EMC expands Ready Solutions for AI portfolio

Dell EMC has expanded its portfolio of Ready Solutions for AI to include Deep Learning with Intel. This new Dell EMC Ready Solution, co-developed with Intel, helps enable organizations to deliver on the combined needs of their data science and IT teams, and benefit from deep learning.

Dell EMC Ready Solutions for AI help customers accelerate time to insights by providing pre-designed and pre-validated solutions ideal for ML and DL. The Deep Learning with Intel design can reduce total cost of ownership by up to 24% over a three-year period while providing double the compute time and 10 times the storage capacity than running the same workload on a leading public cloud AI service, according to research and analyst firm Enterprise Strategy Group². It is the first industry solution with Nauta software, an Intel-led open source initiative for distributed deep learning using Kubernetes. Once deployed, users gain a simplified path to AI-powered applications with an easy-to-set-up solution that lets them focus on building models that generate value instead of constructing IT infrastructure.

Dell EMC Ready Solutions for AI are powered by Dell EMC PowerEdge servers, PowerSwitch networking, and Isilon scale-out NAS storage. Deep Learning with Intel also benefits from the newest AI capabilities of the 2nd Generation Intel® Xeon® Scalable processors and Nauta Enterprise software. With its scalable approach, customers can grow their deep learning environments as needed. It is available to customers today, pre-configured with the open source TensorFlow distributed deep learning framework and libraries for data modeling.

New reference designs make HPC Digital Manufacturing easier

Dell EMC is expanding its Ready Solutions for HPC Digital Manufacturing with new and updated designs for Altair HyperWorks™, ANSYS Fluent®, ANSYS® Mechanical™, Dassault Systèmes SIMULIA®, LSTC LS-DYNA® and Siemens’ Simcenter™ STAR-CCM+™ software. These designs combine the flexibility of customized HPC systems with the speed, simplicity and reliability of pre-configured systems, enabling manufacturing, engineering and design-focused organizations to run complex design simulations, including structural analysis and computational fluid dynamics.

The new Ready Solutions for HPC Digital Manufacturing designs leverage Dell EMC PowerEdge servers, PowerSwitch networking and PowerVault storage, backed by a single point of contact for support with additional service options. The new Ready Solutions also benefit from the 2nd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors available now in several PowerEdge servers, including the four-socket PowerEdge R840.

Dell Technologies Services further simplify AI and HPC deployments

Dell Technologies Consulting Services helps customers implement and operationalize Ready Solutions for AI technologies and libraries, and scale their data engineering and data science capabilities. Once deployed, ProSupport experts provide comprehensive hardware and collaborative software support to help ensure optimal system performance and minimize downtime. Additionally, Education Services offers courses and certifications on data science, advanced analytics and more.

Dell Technologies Services also has expanded its ProDeploy and ProSupport Enterprise Suite offerings to include ProDeploy for HPC and ProSupport Add-on for HPC services.³ This helps make the process of implementing an HPC solution simple, flexible and worry free–from installation and configuration to ongoing, comprehensive, single source support.  

Dell Technologies HPC deployments fuel innovation and AI initiatives

Dell Technologies continues to collaborate with customers worldwide to deploy HPC and AI solutions that fuel a wide range of industry improvements and research activity.

• Norson Design provides advanced solutions for the high-speed marine sector and is designing faster, safer and more efficient boats by working with Supercomputing Wales⁴, and its joint Atos Dell EMC Supercomputing Center of Excellence, as well as a team of researchers at Swansea University. Using HPC simulations and computational fluid dynamics, Norson Design can better understand the complex nature of how boats, water and air interact, and efficiently generate AI-developed aerodynamic and hydrodynamic designs for high-speed vessels. 

• Verne Global, located on a former NATO base in Iceland, operates a vast, industrial scale data center campus, powered by 100% renewable energy. This campus supports a wide range of customers, including manufacturing enterprises and financial, research and life science institutions, whose competitiveness depends on HPC, AI and data-driven applications. With the support of Dell EMC HPC solutions, Verne Global is providing specialist HPC and AI cloud and colocation services to more than 40 organizations.

• The University of Liverpool, a globally-focused institution with multiple physical and virtual campuses across Liverpool, London, Suzhou, Singapore and online, is arming researchers and students with HPC resources to increase collaborative and inter-disciplinary work. Leveraging a hybrid system that brings together on-premises and public cloud resources, the university has created a unified environment, powered by Dell EMC PowerEdge servers and Alces Flight software, that connects to the public cloud and serves as a catalyst for discovery across a wide range of disciplines.
• Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) at The University of Texas at Austin is helping advance research and discovery with its new, National Science Foundation-supported Frontera supercomputer, ranked for the first time as one of the top 10 highest performing supercomputers on the latest Top500 list. Frontera leverages Dell EMC PowerEdge servers and Dell EMC Isilon unstructured data storage solutions in combination with 2nd generation Intel Xeon scalable processors, Intel® Optane™ DC Persistent Memory, CoolIT Systems high-density Direct Contact Liquid Cooling and high performance Mellanox HDR 200Gb/s InfiniBand interconnect to open up new possibilities in science and engineering.

Dell Technologies expands AI and HPC industry collaboration

Dell Technologies also announces new relationships with appliedAI and MOSAICrOWN.

Based in Germany, appliedAI is one of Europe’s largest non-profit initiatives for the application of artificial intelligence technology. Part of UnternehmerTUM, the largest non-profit innovation and entrepreneurship center, it is comprised of more than 25 technology companies and industry, ecosystem, international and academic partners and aims to accelerate the adoption of AI.

The MOSAICrOWN project⁵ aims to create new privacy preserving data markets for data sharing and collaborative analytics in multi-owner scenarios. The project consortium is led by the University of Milan, and includes partners such as Dell Technologies, Mastercard and SAP. The Dell Technologies research team based in Cork, Ireland, is leading the effort to develop secure data market solutions for the intelligent connected vehicle industry.

Both appliedAI and MOSAICrOWN will receive access to computing cycles from Dell Technologies’ supercomputing system Zenith, recognized as one of the industry’s TOP500 highest performing HPC systems, within the Dell EMC HPC and AI Innovation Lab.

TÜV Rheinland, the internationally recognized leader in third-party certification body, formally announced that select models from Dell’s new lines of premium and gaming notebooks with Eyesafe® display have met its low blue light requirements. In a ceremony at Computex Taipei it was announced that Dell premium and gaming models with Eyesafe® display have met TÜV Rheinland’s low blue light certification requirements including Alienware Area 51m, Alienware m17, G7 and XPS 13 2-in-1.

This certification marks an important step in the evolution of the display industry’s recognition of the health risks associated with chronic screen time and over exposure to harmful blue light. This certification indicates that optimal technical balance between display performance and user health has been achieved.

Compared to other solutions for blue light which impact the color gamut with software, Eyesafe® Display redesigns light at the hardware level while maintaining color performance.

Dell Technologies unveiled new products from its Alienware, G-Series and XPS lines that have been integrated with Eyesafe® display earlier this week at Computex, enabling them to meet TÜV low blue light requirements – TÜV Rheinland’s Method 2 is a hardware low-blue light requirement that is seldom met in the PC industry, requiring that the ratio of high-energy visible blue light (415-455nm) to total blue light (400-500nm) is below 50%.

Eyesafe® intelligently manages in-display high-energy visible blue light while maintaining color performance. The Eyesafe® display was developed with a world-class team of eye doctors, engineers and scientists with decades of experience in electronics, display materials, and light management. Eyesafe® display was designed to meet the most exacting industry requirements for safety and color performance.

As daily screen time from phones, tablets, computers and virtual reality is increasing, so is consumption of high-energy visible blue light. With extended use of devices — many in increasingly close proximity to eyes — the negative heath consequences are becoming evident. A growing body of research connects the impacts of blue light exposure to natural sleep cycles and suggests an array of potential related health issues.
