New Walmart Inc. Tech Hub In Toronto To Generate New jobs And Support Canadian Tech Talent

Posted in Commentary with tags on March 15, 2022 by itnerd

Walmart Inc. has announced plans today to make Toronto, Ontario and Atlanta, Georgia two new Walmart Global Tech hubs because of their growing tech presence, connection to Walmart and broad and diverse local talent. The expansion is part of Walmart Global Tech’s plan to hire more than 5,000 associates globally this fiscal year.

Walmart Global Tech plans to make Toronto one of its larger hubs, with hundreds of new jobs over time. The initial hiring phase is expected to include 45 full-time roles in software development, technical program management and product management. Initial hiring in Atlanta is expected to include 140 new full-time roles such as data scientists and software engineers.

The launch of a technology hub in Toronto keeps homegrown tech talent on Canadian soil and is in addition to Walmart’s longstanding local commitment. In 2020, Walmart Canada announced a $3.5 billion investment to make the online and in-store experience simpler, faster and more convenient for Walmart Canada’s customers. Deploying the latest technology throughout the business – from supply chain to associates – is a major part of the investment.

With the addition of the Toronto and Atlanta hubs, Walmart Global Tech will have 16 technology hubs, including teams in Seattle, WA and Chennai, India that launched last year. Walmart Global Tech is the fastest growing corporate team inside the world’s leading retailer. More technologists are choosing Walmart as the place to grow impactful careers and the company continues to invest in its tech associates.  In the last fiscal year, Walmart Global Tech grew by 26% to 20,000 associates and 20% of the Global Tech team earned a promotion.

Roles that are currently open for all locations are available on the careers webpage, careers.walmart.com/technology

Walmart Canada Looking Into Credit Card Hack

Posted in Commentary with tags , , on July 11, 2015 by itnerd

It appears that a website run by a company named PNI Digital Media which is owned by Staples on behalf of Walmart Canada might have been hacked and credit card data might have been stolen:

“We were recently informed of a potential compromise of customer credit card data involving Walmart Canada’s Photocentre website, www.walmartcanadaphotocentre.ca, which is operated by a third-party,” said Alex Roberton, director of corporate affairs and social media at Walmart Canada. “We recommend Walmart Canada’s Online Photocentre customers monitor their card transactions closely and immediately alert their financial institution about any unauthorized charges.”

Mr. Roberton said the company has disabled the website and its mobile applications and notified the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.

Walmart said it has “no reason to believe” its Walmart.ca and Walmart.com destinations or its in-store transactions have been affected.

Still 60,000 people might have been affected by this. That’s not good. This is one story that is sure to develop as the scope of this hack is revealed. Stay tuned.

WalMart & Dell Team Up To Provide Home IT Services….. Oh My!

Posted in Commentary with tags , on July 17, 2008 by itnerd

I’ve been writing about Dell Services for some time, but here is a piece of news something I didn’t expect. Apparently WalMart and Dell have teamed up to provide IT services in 15 Dallas, Tx WalMart locations:

“For Wal-Mart, the program provides an opportunity for us to understand more about what our customers need and expect in home installation and technology services, within a specific market,” according to a statement on Wal-Mart’s Web site. “These Solution Stations will provide our Dallas-area customers with added services, repair and consultation so that they can reach the best solution and value for their home entertainment technology needs.”

From where I stand, this is potentially a Win/Win for both companies. Dell already sells PC products through WalMart and this move will get them in front of more customers. WalMart gets something that sets it apart from other retailers and allows it to compete against Best Buy and their Geek Squad offering for example.

As long as these guys don’t act like Geek Squad and hunt for porn on customers hard drives, this could be a good thing.
