According to Atlas VPN analysis, the top 10 US states by losses to cybercrime are California, New York, Texas, Florida, Ohio, Illinois, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Colorado.

Last year, citizens in these states lost $2.39 billion to various types of internet crime. In the earliest reporting period – 2013, losses reached $327.89 million. Meaning, accumulated monetary damages in these states jumped by 629% over an eight-year period.

The data is compiled from the last eight annual Internet Crime Reports published by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The FBI shares data provided by victims from all over the country to alert US citizens to the ever-increasing rates of internet crime.

To no surprise, California experienced the largest damages in 2020. Californians lost over $621 million in 2020 and a staggering $2.55 billion since 2013.

The average annual loss growth (AAGR) of cybercrime damages reaches 33% in sunny California. On a similar note, financial losses jumped by 491% when comparing 2013 to 2020.

The second place goes to the largest city in the US – New York. Here, people lost nearly $416 million in 2020. The total losses from cybercrime amount to $1.15 billion, counting from 2013.

The average annual growth rate of losses to cybercrime exceeds that of California and stands at 50%. In 2013, New Yorkers lost $38 million to internet crime, which means that in the eight-year span, damages grew by 993%.

Texas takes third place, with close to $314 million in capital loss last year. Through the last eight years, fraudsters swindled over $1.01 billion from unsuspecting citizens.

Texans lost $56 million in 2013. Meaning, cybercrime damages in Texas jumped by 455% from 2013 to 2020. Here, AAGR stands at 30%, which is the lowest of the top 10 states.

Fourth is Florida, with $295 million in losses to various types of internet crime. From 2013 until 2020, citizens in Florida lost a whopping $1.16 billion of their hard-earned money.

ServiceNow Survey Reveals Canadians Want More Digitally Accessible Public Services In The Wake Of COVID-19

Posted in Commentary with tags on May 18, 2021 by itnerd

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused millions of Canadians to access the services they need online. Now, a growing number also want more digital options for fast, easy access to public services – from connecting with a government agency to address a specific question, to managing COVID-19 vaccine appointments. The demand for digitally accessing government services is higher than ever, and it’s here to stay. A new survey commissioned by ServiceNow reveals if given the choice, at least two-thirds of Canadians prefer to access services digitally, across federal (69%), provincial (70%) and municipal services (65%).

Results from ServiceNow’s Citizen Experience in Canada Report, which polled 1,500 Canadian adults, reveals the shift in expectation as 3 in 4 (74%) say the pandemic has made them more open to accessing government services digitally. Delivering great experiences matter, as more than half of Canadians say positive experiences with public services improve their overall perceptions of government (61%) and increase the likelihood they will have future interactions with government agencies (56%).

However, access to public services is a challenge for nearly half (46%) of Canadians who rely on someone else to help them navigate government systems. Among those who rely on someone else to handle public service processes for them, 3 in 10 (28%) need help because the process is too complicated, while another 2 in 10 (18%) say they do not know how to do it or where to go.

Simplicity and accessibility are key to adoption of public services

For Canadians who have had difficult experiences with government services, it is often a matter of starting off on the wrong foot. Six in 10 (62%) Canadians faced challenges with public services before the process even started, as they had trouble making contact with the correct government department to address their needs. This is a result of outdated and complex systems; not being able to get through phone lines (52%), unable to locate correct information (25%), and getting bounced around to different departments (24%).

The opportunity comes down to simplicity. More than 8 in 10 (84%) Canadians believe that their experience navigating and accessing government services would be simplified if more digital options were available. Eight in 10 feel the experience would be improved through greater use of automation (77%) and live chat functions (77%), while nearly three quarters (74%) say their experience could be streamlined through mobile-friendly options.

It’s also important to Canadians that digital services offered by the government are easy to use and fast. For example, Digital Identity is a secure way of loading personal identification into a centralized digital wallet. While this is viewed as an emerging concept for accessing public services, 8 in 10 (82%) Canadians believe it is convenient and would make accessing public services faster (81%) and simpler (78%).

Vaccine rollout highlights digital opportunities for public services

When it comes to accessing critical services such as COVID-19 vaccines, digital workflows have a big role to play in supporting the processes and infrastructure needed to vaccinate people quickly. Close to 3 in 4 (72%) Canadians believe the increased use of digital tools could improve confidence in the government’s vaccine rollout efforts, including:

  • Allowing citizens to book their vaccine appointment online (65%).
  • Providing digital tools that will help medical staff with booking vaccine appointments for the public (45%).
  • Providing digital tools that will help medical staff with the day-to-day logistics of the vaccination process, such as employee staffing and other administrative tasks (38%).

Guest Post: Are You Overlooking These Success Factors for Cloud Adoption? Collaboration Challenges Between Networking and Cloud Teams can Create Significant Issues

Posted in Commentary with tags on May 18, 2021 by itnerd

A report by EMA and BlueCat highlights that 72% of enterprises struggle to realize the full benefits of their cloud initiatives – and details how to avoid this issue

By Jim Williams, VP Marketing at BlueCat

Cloud adoption continues to grow at an exponential rate, reinforcing why it’s even more important that companies get it right. However, many are not.

For organizations to successfully transition to the cloud, both its cloud and networking teams must work hand in hand. Specifically, success hinges on a company’s ability to align both teams at all levels (design, implementation, and operation). Which begs the question – are you aware of how well your teams collaborate?

Enterprise Management Associates (EMA) recently conducted a survey of 212 networking and cloud professionals, including multi-billion-dollar institutions, to explore the state of collaboration between the networking and cloud teams, analyze why their partnership is critical to a cloud investment, and how to ensure dysfunction doesn’t impact your organization’s cloud initiatives.

What happens when your Cloud and Networking teams aren’t aligned?

Data from the report reveals that 72% of enterprises struggle to realize the full value of their cloud initiatives, and much of that this is directly tied to organizations’ failures to integrate network infrastructure teams into the cloud journey.

It also reveals that collaboration challenges between networking and cloud teams have directly resulted in:

–        Security & compliance issues at 73% of surveyed organizations, which include downtime, compliance violation, and data theft

–        IT operations issues at 89% of surveyed organizations, which include application performance problems, significant downtime, in addition to failed service rollouts

–        Business-level issues at 82% of surveyed organizations, which include productivity loss, cost overruns and budget issues, as well as customer loyalty and satisfaction

Shamus McGillicuddy, the lead analyst on this research and Vice President of Research at EMA, says, “Applications are migrating to the cloud every day, so there is no time to waste. Industry leaders must recognize that the networking team offers intrinsic value to a cloud adoption initiative, and they should necessarily be an equal partner in the journey. Getting things like DNS and IP addressing right at the beginning of a cloud initiative can save millions of dollars and years in project time.”

How to ensure strong collaboration between your teams

To prevent the above, EMA recommends enterprises take the four following steps to establish stronger partnerships between network and cloud teams:

1)     Make collaboration a C-level initiative

Only 34% of research participants believed that executive leadership is doing a very good job at pushing for better collaboration, whereas very successful enterprises were almost twice as likely to say so (58%). This underscores that an emphasis on alignment coming from the C-level leads to a higher probability of both teams working in sync. Leaving staff further down the hierarchy to stitch together a poorly designed hybrid environment is a recipe for failure.

2)     Give the network team an equal seat at the cloud table

For cloud adoption to run smoothly, the network team must have input and visibility into the design of hybrid networks. 88% of research respondents believe that the on-premises network team must have visibility and input into cloud design.  IT leaders must push for processes and procedures that allow both groups visibility across the hybrid cloud environment.

3)     Unify and modernize across domains

Many enterprises are unifying DNS management and security across on-premises and cloud networks. Nearly half also fully unify compliance management. By contrast, almost all unsuccessful cloud adopters report silos within IP space management. Siloed management of critical services like DNS and IP space management is almost certainly a bad strategy.

4)     Ensure each team is trained on all the necessary skills

IT execs need to close the skills gaps between their two teams. Cloud teams have a limited understanding of networking, and network teams are not up to date with the tools and solutions that cloud teams use. Skills gaps can be closed via training (for example, somebody should know the difference between DNS service capabilities offered by the major cloud providers) and by giving network and cloud teams access to technologies and tools used by their peers in the other silo. Shared access to tools and technology will give these teams hands-on experience that will help them acquire skills.

IT executives must accept that addressing dysfunction between cloud and networking teams should be high on their agenda, and that they should start by empowering network teams to become equal partners in the cloud journey. Too often, networking teams get involved too late, and this results in costly problems. Organizations with networking and cloud teams that are aligned get the most out of their cloud investment.

Parler Returns To Apple’s App Store With AI Based Moderation

Posted in Commentary with tags on May 18, 2021 by itnerd

Parler, the social network favored by the far-right, is back up on Apple’s App Store and will apparently rely on AI algorithms to automatically flag hate speech. But only on iPhones. Not on Android phones or on the web according to the Washington Post:

Posts that are labeled “hate” by Parler’s new artificial intelligence moderation system won’t be visible on iPhones or iPads. There’s a different standard for people who look at Parler on other smartphones or on the Web: They will be able to see posts marked as “hate,” which includes racial slurs, by clicking through to see them.

That’s great I suppose for those who are within Apple’s walled garden. But it really doesn’t address the issue of Parler not exactly being great for civil discourse. I say that because those who really want to see all the hate, intolerance, and conspiracy theories that they can handle will simply use Android or the web. And the flip side of that is that AI isn’t perfect. Thus it is going to flag some things that shouldn’t be flagged, and miss stuff that should be flagged. In other words, it is not a solution to Parler’s larger issues. But they’re back on the App Store so I suppose it’s a win for Parler.

Got A BlackBerry Device? You May Want To Start Planning To Swap It For Something Else As It’s About To Go EOL

Posted in Commentary with tags on May 18, 2021 by itnerd

BlackBerry has announced this morning that a number of their legacy OSes will be going end of life. You have until January 4, 2022 to switch to Team iOS or Team Android if you’re affected by this. Which is a backhanded way of saying that you should start shopping for a new device now. This was announced via Twitter:

And the Tweet was linked to this FAQ. But if you don’t want to read that, here’s what you need to know. BlackBerry is going decommission the legacy services for:

  • BlackBerry 7.1 OS and earlier
  • BlackBerry 10 software
  • BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1 and earlier versions

The only exception to this end of life announcement is that those with a BlackBerry Android device are not affected by this.

Now personally, I don’t know many people who still have these devices so this should be a non-event for most. Except for Ontario Premier Doug Ford who apparently keeps a stack of them around because he doesn’t want to switch to a new device. Now he has no choice but to get with the times and join the cool kids in using a device that is up to date.

RIP BlackBerry OS and BlackBerry 10, it was nice knowing you.
