Posted in Commentary with tags on January 7, 2025 by itnerd

Roku, the #1 selling TV OS in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, has surpassed 90 million streaming households in the first week of January 2025, a significant milestone as streaming becomes the leading way to watch TV. As the top selling TV OS for over five years in the U.S., Roku is in nearly half of all U.S. broadband households.

In 2024, Roku celebrated 10 years of the Roku TV program and 15 years since the launch of Roku’s first connected streaming device, with millions of units sold to customers globally. Roku TVs and devices deliver an unparalleled viewing experience with a simple and iconic interface, seamless navigation, and a commitment to excellence that sets the standard in streaming. Last year, Roku continued to introduce innovative features that enhance the TV experience, including Backdrops, which transforms any Roku TV into a work of art, and Roku Smart Picture, which automatically optimizes picture quality.

Roku TVs and streaming players offer incredible value for customers with an always expanding content library, including over 500 free live linear channels in the U.S., premium exclusive content, and thousands of free-on demand options. The Roku Channel is a top 10 streaming service in the U.S. and has seen over 80% year-over-year growth. With the increasing number of streaming choices available, Roku’s features like universal search, What to Watch, and Live TV Guide make it easy to find your favorite content across multiple apps, and Roku’s unique content destinations, like the recent Olympics Zone, offer genre-based programming from across the platform in one convenient location, for seamless browsing and discovery.

Roku devices, featuring the Roku Experience, form the foundation of Roku’s platform business, which encompasses advertising and subscriptions. Advertisers love Roku because it’s the lead-in to all TV, featuring unique advertising experiences like Roku City and the Sports Zone. Streaming services appreciate the ability to promote subscriptions on the Roku platform, and Roku Pay simplifies the process for streamers seeking a simple way to sign up for and manage subscriptions through Roku.

The Green Bay Packers Online Store Has Been Pwned By Hackers

Posted in Commentary with tags on January 7, 2025 by itnerd

In what can only be considered a cybersecurity fumble, The Green Bay Packers American football team is notifying fans that a threat actor hacked its official online retail store in October and injected a card skimmer script to steal customers’ personal and payment information.

On October 23, 2024, we were alerted to the presence of malicious code inserted on the Pro Shop website by a third party threat actor. Immediately upon learning this, we temporarily disabled all payment and checkout capabilities on the Pro Shopwebsite and began an investigation. We engaged outside cybersecurity experts to assist with this investigation and determinewhat, if any, customer information may have been affected. We also immediately required the vendor that hosts and managesthe Pro Shop website to remove the malicious code from the checkout page, refresh its passwords, and confirm there wereno remaining vulnerabilities. Based on the results of the forensic investigation, on December 20, 2024 we discovered thatthe malicious code may have allowed an unauthorized third party to view or acquire certain customer information enteredat the checkout that used a limited set of payment options on the Pro Shop website between September 23-24, 2024 andOctober 3-23, 2024. Purchases on the Pro Shop website that were made using a gift card, Pro Shop website account,Paypal, or Amazon Pay, were not affected by this malicious code.

And:

The information that may have been accessed or acquired included certain information entered on the Pro Shop websitewhen making a purchase, and may have included your name, address (billing and shipping), email address, credit card type, credit card number, credit card expiration date, and credit card verification number.

Javvad Malik, Lead Security Awareness Advocate at KnowBe4, commented:

“The Packers’ response, upon discovery of the breach, is commendable. Disabling payment and checkout capabilities to stem further data exfiltration and engaging with external cybersecurity experts to delve into the breach’s extent. This response underscores the critical importance of prompt action and external expertise in managing cyber incidents.”

“The breach’s detection by Dutch e-commerce security company Sansec demonstrates not only how important third-party cybersecurity firms are, buy how keeping a vigilant eye out for cybersecurity issues shouldn’t be limited to just the internal security team. Rather third parties, employees, and the wider community can all play their part in identifying and notifying potential breaches. This creates a culture of security where everyone is helping each other stay secure.”

“The breach serves as a compelling case for the need for constant vigilance, regular security audits, and the implementation of robust security frameworks that can adapt to evolving threats. Especially for e-commerce platforms, where customer trust is paramount, the investment in security is not just a regulatory requirement but a fundamental business need.”

“This incident also highlights an ongoing challenge within cybersecurity: the necessity to balance user experience with security measures. Often, the most secure system is the one that is least usable, yet in the world of retail, usability is king. Finding that equilibrium, where security measures do add a disproportionate amount of friction to the user experience is the key.”

The Packers like any organization who gets pwned will have to regain the trust of its users. That won’t be easy. But given how loyal their fan base is, they might be able to score a touchdown on that front. Or at the very least kick a field goal.

Samsung Expands ‘AI for All’ Vision

Posted in Commentary with tags on January 7, 2025 by itnerd

Samsung has unveiled its new “AI for All” vision at CES® 2025, with the focus of making AI an “Everyday, Everywhere” experience. Building on a decade of connected home leadership, Samsung is leveraging the power of AI to bring intelligence to every day, enabling people to experience a more personal, impactful and empowering world.

Jong-Hee (JH) Han, Vice Chairman, CEO and Head of Samsung’s Device eXperience (DX) Division, opened Samsung’s CES 2025 press conference by introducing the company’s roadmap for Home AI, a plan for redefining the meaning of home by providing truly personalized services across all intelligent, connected devices. This strategy, alongside Samsung’s innovations in AI-powered devices across mobile, home appliances and visual display, is a testament to Samsung’s longstanding commitment to human-centric innovation and brings the power of AI to everyday experiences to make life better for all.

Later in the press conference, Jonathan Gabrio, Head of the Connected Experience Center at Samsung Electronics America, expanded on Samsung’s Home AI vision, underscoring the company’s commitment to integrating AI across the entire connected experience to cater to diverse lifestyles. From single person households to multi-generational families under one roof, Home AI learns from habits and adapts to individual routines for a hyper-personalized smart home experience.

Security and Privacy are at the heart of Samsung’s strategy for Home AI. Samsung recognizes that as users introduce more connected devices into their homes and AI becomes more personal, it must also protect users’ privacy. To meet these evolving needs, the company has extended its security capabilities. Now, Samsung Knox Matrix protects home appliances along with mobile devices and TVs with its signature blockchain technology, ensuring that connected devices are working together to protect the user’s data from digital threats. With Knox Matrix Dashboard, a transparent privacy control, Samsung offers simplified security management across the entire connected home. As information syncs across devices, Knox Matrix’s Credential Sync ensures that data can only be encrypted or decrypted from the user’s devices, and Samsung Knox Vault adds another layer of protection, keeping sensitive information like passwords or PINs isolated in a secure location.

Samsung’s One UI provides an integrated software experience across all connected Samsung devices, enhancing interoperability, empowering users with AI-based features.

Underpinning it all is SmartThings, Samsung’s smart home platform that brings intelligent connectivity to hundreds of millions of users around the world. With Samsung’s belief in open innovation and partnership as a foundation, SmartThings is being equipped with the latest AI technology to streamline and personalize the smart home experience for complete convenience. SmartThings Ambient Sensing intuitively understands the user’s environment and situational context by analyzing even human movements and ambient sounds through connected devices within the home, thereby enabling those devices to intelligently and seamlessly respond and adapt to daily routines.

Bixby Voice, an enhanced AI voice assistant, will be integrated to increase usability. The assistant has been trained so that it can recognize individual voices and respond to commands in a way that works best for each user.

These Home AI updates free up time previously spent on home management, allowing users to focus on what matters most and explore new passions. Samsung’s new Galaxy Book5 Pro and Galaxy Book5 360 are AI PCs built to boost productivity with Intel® Core™ Ultra Processors (Series 2) and enhance creativity with features like AI Select and Samsung Studio. AI Select works to make browsing a breeze, while Samsung Studio lets users edit across their Galaxy smartphone, tablet or PC wherever inspiration strikes, at home or on the go. Powered by the NPU, Photo Remaster upscales low-resolution photos into high-quality visuals, while Storage Share lets users directly access the files on their smartphone from their PC, avoiding the process of downloading.

With productivity comes proactivity, too. When AI and Samsung Health combine, users are empowered to take control of their health and wellness. Through a newpartnership with Dexcom and with AI-driven health insights gathered on the Galaxy Ring and Galaxy Watch, Samsung is helping users make sense of their data and arrive at more informed decisions about their well-being. These new capabilities will further improve the overall experience of Samsung Health.

Samsung’s latest screen experiences, powered by Samsung Vision AI, bring unexpected joy to users’ days through unparalleled personalization and exciting new features. The AI Screen experience infuses intelligence into TVs, bringing Generative Wallpaper, Live Translate and Click to Search to users. At the forefront of this technology is the Neo QLED 8K, which provides Samsung’s most advanced viewing experiences though AI features like 8K AI Upscaling Pro, Auto HDR Remastering Pro and Color Booster Pro — all of which work behind the scenes to intelligently enhance picture quality. Plus, The Frame’s art experience is expanding, allowing all Samsung QLEDs to come with a digital collection of over 3,000 art pieces, making it so that they can turn any room into a personal gallery.

Samsung’s commitment to its Screens Everywhere strategy is reflected in new display options for its appliances, including its new refrigerators with 9″ AI Home displays and other devices with 7″ screens. Consumers will be able to enjoy heightened functionality — including various entertainment services, AI features such as AI Vision Inside and direct access to the online grocery service Instacart — on a broader range of products.

Beyond the home, Samsung’s AI innovations are set to transform the business environment with SmartThings Pro. Created to bring the same AI-powered digital solutions to business partners as SmartThings offers consumers, SmartThings Pro is a B2B solution spanning multi-residential homes to retail spaces, hotels, schools and more. Since its launch last June, SmartThings Pro provides businesses with integrations to better understand energy usage, proactively identify devices with maintenance needs and offer comprehensive control of connected solutions. Samsung is working with partners to create an innovative platform, Future Innovation Technology (FIT), for larger businesses and buildings to set automated climate controls that save energy.

The company is also working with Samsung Heavy Industries on a new SmartThings collaboration that uses the Matter connectivity standard to connect with compatible ships. SmartThings for Ships[9] offers a Pre-Sailing Mode, which allows captains and crews to automate when the engine starts and turn on settings for temperature and lights, saving time and energy. Meanwhile, Care Mode provides a complete view of a ship’s power, AC systems and smoke alarms, while Protection Mode constantly monitors for — and will alert captain and crew to — any abnormal activity.

Additionally, Samsung is expanding its SmartThings and automotive integrations in a new partnership with Hyundai Motor Group to bring SmartThings to Hyundai EVs. With the expanded ecosystem, users can now use SmartThings Find to easily locate their parked car, even in crowded parking lots. With the power of Home AI, SmartThings can make recommendations on when to recharge EVs based on schedules and rates. And if there is a neighborhood power outage, it will automatically activate Battery Backup Mode, which works alongside AI Energy Mode to extend the battery energy to power home essentials.

Finally, Inhee Chung, Vice President of the Corporate Sustainability Center, underscored how Samsung’s AI for All vision is rooted in the brand’s commitment to harness the power of advanced technology for a better, more inclusive world. Samsung is introducing diverse and enhanced accessibility features through its AI-powered devices and services, starting with the ability to automatically sync accessibility features across home appliances from a smartphone.

From the first half of this year, Bixby will automatically have connected devices display text in high contrast or provide a voice guide for family members with low vision, all by simply recognizing their voice. For those with low vision, AI is improving Audio Subtitles by lowering foreign language audio and reading out the subtitles in the language of the user’s choosing.

Chung also discussed how initiatives like Samsung Solve for Tomorrow, Samsung Innovation Campus and the company’s work with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) are enabling the next generation of innovators. Today, Samsung Solve for Tomorrow challenges more than 2.6 million students across 66 countries to use STEM to address challenges in their community. In particular, during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games last year, Samsung and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) launched a digital community “Together for Tomorrow, Enabling People” and appointed the top 10 teams globally from Solve for Tomorrow as community ambassadors. Meanwhile, Samsung Innovation Campus has helped prepare nearly 180,000 young people across 33 countries for the workforce through training on emerging technologies like AI, IoT and big data.

Achim Steiner, Administrator of UNDP, joined VP Chung on stage to provide an update on Samsung and UNDP’s partnership to harness the power of technology for good. Since its initiation five years ago, the Samsung Global Goals app[11] has raised over $20 million thanks to nearly 300 million users who are using a Galaxy smartphone, tablet or watch. Plus, Samsung and UNDP’s joint work through the Generation17 initiative continues to inspire extraordinary young leaders around the world who are mobilizing their communities to advance the Global Goals.

Vulnerable Moxa devices expose industrial networks to attacks

Posted in Commentary with tags on January 6, 2025 by itnerd

Industrial networking and communications provider Moxa is warning of a high-severity and a critical vulnerability that impacts various models of its cellular routers, secure routers, and network security appliances.

Moxa’s cellular routers, secure routers, and network security appliances are affected by two critical vulnerabilities that pose a significant security risk.

  • CVE-2024-9138: This vulnerability involves hard-coded credentials, which could allow an authenticated user to escalate privileges and gain root-level access to the system.
  • CVE-2024-9140: This vulnerability allows attackers to exploit special characters to bypass input restrictions, potentially leading to unauthorized command execution.

Immediate action is strongly recommended to prevent potential exploitation and mitigate these risks.

These two issues are a facepalm moment for me. I’ll get to why in a moment. Right now, Paul Bischoff, Consumer Privacy Advocate at Comparitech had this to say:

“For the moment, this does not appear to be a zero-day vulnerability that’s already being exploited in the wild, and a patch is available. However, unlike our cell phones and laptops, industrial equipment isn’t always set up to automatically download and install the latest update. Administrators of the vulnerable routers need to ensure they apply the necessary firmware updates as soon as possible. Considering the industrial environments that Moxa routers are used in, a successful attack could have serious consequences.”

Chris Hauk, Consumer Privacy Champion at Pixel Privacy:

“Cases like this, where a vulnerability exists, but so does an update that can fix the vulnerabilities used by the attack underscore the need for enterprises to keep close track of updates, so they can be installed as soon as possible. Only by keeping track of vulnerabilities and their fixes can organizations keep their systems safer from attack.”

One of these vulnerabilities involves hard coded credentials. The use of hard coded credentials should be discouraged as it creates all sorts of security risks that are routinely exploited by malware and hackers. Thus if you have one of these routers, you should update it right now.

Salt Typhoon breached more US companies

Posted in Commentary with tags on January 6, 2025 by itnerd

News is out that even more U.S. companies have been added to the list of telecommunications firms hacked by Salt Typhoon according to the Wall Street Journal. If that link doesn’t work, here’s another link that covers the salient points.

Chris Hauk, Consumer Privacy Champion at Pixel Privacy had this to say:

“Possible targets of these Chinese attackers need to immediately follow the steps outlined by the FBI and NSA to help harden their systems against attack. Actually, any organization would be advised to follow the steps. Patching and upgrading apps and devices, limiting the types of connections and privileged accounts, and only using strong encryption, are just some of the steps organizations can take to harden their systems against attack.”

Roger Grimes, Data-Driven Defense Evangelist at KnowBe4 followed up with this:

“The Chinese have been hacking into US organizations for decades and taking every secret and bit of intellectual property they wanted to get their hands on. This is just the latest iteration. The US Dept. of Treasury recently sanctioned a Chinese publicly traded company for being involved in these latest attacks. The way you keep Chinese attackers out is the same as it has been for decades: aggressively mitigate social engineering and patch your software and firmware. Social engineering and phishing are involved in 70% – 90% of successful attacks, and vulnerabilities in software and firmware are involved in 33% of successful attacks. These two root hacking causes account for 90% – 99% of the risk in most organizations. It’s not enough to do training once a year or once a quarter. It needs to be at least once a month along with monthly to weekly simulated phishing exercises. We have the data to show that organizations that do effective security awareness training are far less likely to be successfully compromised.”

It’s good that people are discovering how big this hack is. But it’s bad that it is this big. We all need to do everything possible to ensure that nothing like this ever happens again.
