Twitter Is Now Engaged In A Second Round Of Layoffs…. This Time It’s Contractors…. Thousands Of Them

Posted in Commentary with tags on November 13, 2022 by itnerd

Elon Musk’s burning down of Twitter continues unabated.

Casey Newton of Platformer is saying that thousands of contractors worldwide have been laid off. And the way they’re finding out is absolutely wrong:

This is absolutely wrong on so many levels. You don’t treat other human beings this way. Clearly Elon Musk on top of being immature is a horrible human being who has no feelings whatsoever. It shows the level of desperation that he has to get Twitter to make money quickly in order to pay back all the loans he took out to buy Twitter. Oh yeah, if you think Twitter is in a bad place now, it’s about to get worse.

Oh yeah. Then there’s also this:

This guy is a scumbag too. Just like his boss. My advice for former Twitter employees who get a call to come back to work, decline it. Twitter doesn’t deserve you or your talents. Let them burn.

Immature Elon Musk Picks A Fight With A US Senator….. Which Will Not End Well For Elon Musk

Posted in Commentary with tags on November 13, 2022 by itnerd

Yesterday I wrote a story on US Senator Ed Markey wanting answers from Elon Musk about the Twitter Blue debacle. Specifically, why Elon Musk did nothing to stop people from impersonating major brands and famous people. In that story I said this:

Now Elon can try to ignore this. But that would not be a good idea as all that will likely result is him being hauled in front of Congress where he will have to answer questions. And trying to blow that off will not end well for him. Thus I hope for his sake that Elon is drafting answers for Senator Markey that are comprehensive and detailed. Otherwise it’s not going to end well for him.

The good news is he is not ignoring this. The bad news is that Musk has decided to pick a fight with this senator. Via a reader:

Really Elon? You’re really going to tempt fate by being so juvenile? Because if you do, it’s going to be highly likely that any number of bad things will happen to you. Such as fines, investigations, congressional hearings, etc. None of which is a good look on you.

Oh wait, it appears that we might be heading down that road.

What Senator Markey is talking about is this:

  • Twitter is subject to a FTC consent decree that stems from begin caught using the security phone numbers users to target ads to said users.
  • Tesla is being investigated by the NHTSA for it’s autopilot software and how it works. This same senator has said “every day that Tesla disregards safety rules and misleads the public about its ‘Autopilot’ system, our roads become more dangerous.”

The fact is that Elon isn’t in a good place here. His immature behaviour is only going to result in him being put under so much scrutiny by congress and others that he going to wish that he would rather be in a proctology exam. It’s also going to send more of Twitters advertisers heading to the exits because nobody wants to be associated with this train wreck that Elon has created nor do they want to be associated with his immature behaviour. Finally users will continue to migrate to Mastodon and other places to avoid the hellscape that Twitter has become under immature Elon Musk. And all of that will not only kill Twitter, but it will start to negatively affect Tesla and SpaceX. The thing is, this is what you get when you have a guy who has the maturity of an adolescent at best running multi-billon dollar companies. Musk seriously needs to get his act together or find others to be his adults in the room. But I suspect that we’re way past that and we’re in the endgame for Twitter for sure, but maybe we’re also in the endgame for Tesla and SpaceX as well.

How To Join Mastodon In Two Easy Steps

Posted in Commentary with tags on November 13, 2022 by itnerd

Thanks to Elon Musk’s incompetence or desperation, or perhaps both, Twitter is now the hellscape of toxic behaviour, racism, and bad behaviour that he promised that it would not become. That is sending people running from Twitter to Mastodon. The best way to describe Mastadon is that it is 2014 era Twitter that is made up of decentralized servers and it has no adverts. A big plus is that it is completely open source and isn’t controlled by any one person or organization. That decentralization does create a bit of complexity that you need to navigate if you want to join Mastodon. Thus this guide hopes to help to make this process easier by breaking it down all the required steps in bite sized chunks.

Step One: Choose A Server

To join Mastodon you need to join a Mastodon. Like I said earlier, Mastodon is made up of decentralized servers. So choosing one is your first task. You can find servers by choosing by geographic region, language, topic registration process and whether or not they’re hosted by individuals or organizations. All servers on the official Mastodon site have agreed to follow the best practices of the Mastodon Server Covenant. In my case, I am on noc.social because that one is tech focused, and I am a tech guy. But if you need some help with that, I would recommend that you visit instances.social which has a wizard that can help you to select the best server based on your interests. You might want to read the server’s about us page to make sure it’s a good fit for you as well as reading the server rules to make sure that you don’t break any of the server’s rules.

Step Two: Join The Server

Once you’ve chosen a server, your next step is to join it. Each Mastodon instance will have its own sign-up process, but majority of Mastodon servers work like this:

  • You provide a username.
  • You provide your real email address and a password,
  • You check the box agreeing to the terms of service and server rules and click “Sign Up.”

You’ll then see a notification asking you to check your email for a verification message. Click the “Verify email address” in that email message, and you’re done. You’ll have a username that looks like this:

@USERNAME@Server.com

Where @USERNAME is the username that you chose and @Server.com is the name of the Mastodon server that you joined.

At this point you can not only start to follow people that server, but you can follow anyone in what is called the “Fediverse” which is the federation of all official Mastodon servers. So in short, you’re not missing out on anyone that you might want to follow by joining a specific server.

Now if you want to follow some people who are prominent on Twitter and have moved to Mastodon, this list will help you with that. And if you want to follow me specifically, I can be found on Mastodon at @The_IT_Nerd@noc.social and I am currently cross posting all my stories there along with interacting with people as well.

Should you have any questions, drop me a note in the comments and I’ll try and help you out. In the meantime, you can enjoy your hellscape free social media platform.

US Senator Wants “Answers” From Twitter… Which Is Bad News If You’re Elon Musk

Posted in Commentary with tags on November 12, 2022 by itnerd

I think it’s safe to say that Elon Musk has a lot to worry about at the moment. And the list keeps growing. The latest item that is on the list is Senator Ed Markey has sent a letter to Elon Musk which he has also posted to his website demanding answers about the Twitter Blue fiasco:

“Apparently, due to Twitter’s lax verification practices and apparent need for cash, anyone could pay $8.00 and impersonate someone on your platform. Selling the truth is dangerous and unacceptable. Twitter must explain how this happened and how it will prevent it from happening again,” wrote Senator Markey in his letter to Musk.

Oh yeah, I’m calling it now that the EU is going be knocking on Musk’s door in the next few days asking for similar answers. And that’s going to be even less fun for Musk when that happens.

The Ad Agency That Apple And Mc Donald’s Use Recommends To Clients A Pause To Ads On Twitter

Posted in Commentary with tags on November 12, 2022 by itnerd

The hits to Elon Musk and Twitter keeps coming. The latest hit is being reported by The Verge and it’s a big hit:

Omnicom, one of the world’s biggest ad firms, representing brands like McDonald’s, Apple, and PepsiCo, is recommending clients pause spending on Twitter, according to an internal memo obtained by The Verge.

Omnicom Media Group is recommending clients “pause activity on Twitter in the short term,” according to a note titled “Twitter – Continued Brand Safety Concerns.” The memo cites recent events in the last few days that have “potential serious implications” for brands running ads on the platform.

The memo cites the deep layoffs of Twitter trust and safety teams, the resignations of high-profile executives, and the slew of “verified” impersonation accounts as being key issues for advertisers. There is “evidence that the risk to our clients’ brand safety has risen sharply to a level most would find unacceptable,” the memo reads. “We recommend pausing activity on Twitter in the short term until the platform can prove it has reintroduced safeguards to an acceptable level and has regained control of its environment.”

The memo goes on to say that Omnicom has “formally requested that Twitter assure us that these issues will not impact compliant processes, operations, products, brand safety and client investment on the platform in any way” but that “seemingly due to the lack of senior leadership now in these areas, Twitter has not been able to give those assurances.”

I have said this for a while. Elon needs to assure advertisers that Twitter is a safe place for brands to be on. Currently that isn’t the case and Musk hasn’t done nearly enough to convince advertisers otherwise. That means that since Twitter is highly dependent on advertising, an ad agency like Omnicom can effectively kill Twitter if their clients pull out of advertising on Twitter. Thus it’s now Elon Musk’s Rubicon moment. He has one shot at doing something meaningful to save Twitter and avoid costing himself $44 billion. If he succeeds at dealing with Omnicom’s concerns, he has a lifeline. If he doesn’t succeed at dealing with Omnicom’s concerns, Twitter is dead. It’s that simple.

Your move Elon.

We Now Have Proof That Sobeys Was Pwned By Ransomware

Posted in Commentary on November 12, 2022 by itnerd

Earlier this week, I reported that there were rumours that Canadian grocery chain Sobeys was hit with a ransomware attack. At the time Sobeys simply said that there was an “IT problem” that they were dealing with. But from what I have heard, some of which was from Sobeys employees, I knew that they were hiding the truth. And now we have proof of that from a pair of reports.

On Thursday, this happened:

However, on Thursday, two provincial privacy watchdogs said they had received data breach reports from Sobeys.

Both Quebec’s access to information commission and Alberta’s privacy commission have both been notified by the grocer about a “confidentiality incident.”

Quebec’s access to information commission said confidentiality incidents occur when there is unauthorized access, use or loss of personal information or any other breach of the protection of this information.

That’s the first hint that this is not some “IT problem” and is indicative of Sobeys getting pwned and the threat actors having access to confidential data. Be it employee data, customer data, both, or even more than that. I say that because you only file a report like this if you’re the victim of some sort of data breach. Or in this case, you’ve been pwned by hackers. Since these are both public agencies that Sobeys reported this to, we’ll find out soon enough what was leaked and how.

The next day Bleeping Computer posted a story with proof that Sobeys was pwned in a ransomware attack:

Furthermore, based on ransom notes and negotiation chats BleepingComputer has seen, the attackers deployed Black Basta ransomware payloads to encrypt systems on Sobeys’ network.

BleepingComputer was told by multiple sources that the attack occurred late Friday/early Saturday morning.

Photographs shared by Sobeys employees online also show in-store computers displaying a Black Basta ransom note.

That’s right. They have screen shots, and Bleeping Computer has proof that Sobeys was in negotiations with the threat actors. Thus at this point, Sobeys really does need to just come clean and admit that they were pwned and what they are going to do to remediate the situation. The problem is that this is the worst kept secret in Canada at the moment, and Sobeys not only looks bad, but their silence really doesn’t create trust among their customer base. My wife for example has been freaking out as she walks a couple of blocks to the local Sobeys store anytime she need to grab something. And as a result of her shopping at Sobeys, she’s afraid her personal information has been exposed. I can’t answer that question. But I bet Sobeys can. But they’re too busy trying to hide this rather than taking steps to level with the public and describe what their next steps are to regain their trust. And to take this further, what if you’re an employee of Sobeys, I’m pretty sure that you’re scared that your personal info has been exposed. And to be frank, you should be. The fact is that Sobeys isn’t helping itself here, and that will only hurt Sobeys as a brand at the end of the day.

AppDynamics highlights a new class of post-pandemic agents of transformation

Posted in Commentary with tags on November 11, 2022 by itnerd

One of the terms often heard at development conferences is ‘change agents’. The term, which some trace back to 2018, refers to leaders in the technology sector who have been vital in transforming roles, organizations, technologies, etc. And while the last 4 years have been quite productive for the sector, many technologists today feel that being one is harder than ever.

The insight comes from the study conducted by AppDynamics: ‘Agents of Transformation 2022: Innovating in the Experience Economy’ whose objective was to know the perception of IT professionals to determine how they saw the role of agents of transformation today.

72% of Canadian technologists believe their experiences in recent years – particularly during the pandemic – have accelerated their careers, and 88% now consider themselves to be business leaders. Also, 82% say the skills and qualities that define an Agent of Transformation have evolved.

The study revealed that in order to be considered a Transformation Agent, technologists need to be committed to leaving a positive legacy within their organizations and beyond, successfully driving business and digital transformation projects, and always doing things differently to shape a better future for all. On the other hand, they need to recognize the necessity to continually learn and develop their own skills, to reassure and educate those around them, and to collaborate to deliver maximum customer and business impact.

Tips to make your drive safer and easier while getting to events this November: Plan your drive with Waze

Posted in Commentary with tags on November 11, 2022 by itnerd

t’s that time of year – when the hustle and bustle of the holiday season begins, and special events around the city take over our calendars!

For example, Katharine Harvey’s Light Up Downsview: A Drone Performance this Saturday (Nov 12) is at capacity, so attendees and residents in the area can expect the roads to be busy. The same will be true for other events happening this month including the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair (Nov 4 – 13); Santa Claus parades in Ontario throughout November and December; the One of a Kind 2022 Winter Show (Nov 24 – Dec 4); Cavalcade of Lights (Nov 26); and Glow Toronto – Christmas Light Festival & Market (Nov 30 – Dec 31).

Torontonians and visitors from out of town heading to any of these events can plan their routes ahead of time (especially when weather is unpredictable) and get real-time traffic alerts from fellow drivers and riders while en route with community-based navigation app Waze. Here are some tips for navigating to events like these safely while avoiding traffic – making your travel time less stressful and giving you more time for fun:

Plan your drive ahead of time: Waze can help drivers choose the best route to their destination in advance, based on traffic patterns. It will even remind you when it’s time to leave.

Real-time reports: When using the app, users will see real-time reports of crashes, alternative routes, construction, weather hazards and traffic conditions — to help drivers make the best routing choice

Find parking: Need to find a parking lot near your scheduled drive? Once you’ve planned a drive, simply tap the three dots next to the drive and tap Find parking. This will bring up parking lots on the map close to your destination. Alternatively, after you have started a drive you can tap on the blue down arrow to pull up your drive details and select ‘P’ under “Add a stop.” This will pull up parking lot locations near your final destination as pins on the map, with details and the option to “Park here.”

Gas station feature: Get the most up-to-date gas location and pricing information. The Waze Gas Station feature notifies drivers of nearby gas stations, prompting users to update the price of gas at specific locations so other Waze users can search for the cheapest prices in their area.

Twitter Blue Is Gone As The Implosion Of Twitter Continues

Posted in Commentary with tags on November 11, 2022 by itnerd

It seems that Elon Musk finally figured out that Twitter Blue has become a train wreck next to a dumpster fire that he could not fix. I say that because The Verge is reporting that Twitter Blue appears to have been deep sixed:

Twitter users are reporting that the option to sign up for the company’s new $7.99 subscription service, Twitter Blue, has disappeared from the platform’s iOS app just days after the service launched.

You could previously subscribe to Twitter Blue from the sidebar in the iOS app (the service has yet to launch for Android users), but users this morning reported that the option has disappeared. For those for whom the link is still available, trying to sign up only returns an error message. “Thank you for your interest!” it reads. “Twitter Blue will be available in your country in the future. Please check back later.”

I can confirm that the option is gone for me as well. And reverse engineering expert Jane Manchun Wong seems to have further proof:

So clearly this has been pulled by Twitter and it’s not an accident or an outage.

If it wasn’t clear before, it should be clear now. Elon Musk has no clue what he’s doing. He’s trying random stuff hoping to hit a home run, and he’s ignoring the people around him who are trying to give him advice. Assuming that they have the courage to speak truth to power. As a result you’re seeing stuff like this Twitter Blue train wreck next to a dumpster fire. And since this is happening in public, it is likely sending advertisers to the exits along with the money that Twitter needs to survive. That’s creating a death spiral that will be hard to escape. I say that because while some predict that Twitter will be sold by Elon Musk so that he can find some way to save face and recoup the money he’s spent on it. I seriously doubt that Twitter will survive that long because Musk is doing everything he possibly can to kill the platform.
