Review: Moshi ionBank 5K With Lightning Cable

Posted in Products with tags , on August 24, 2015 by itnerd

One interesting item in my goodie bag from iStore was this Moshi ionBank 5K With Lightning Cable. It’s a battery pack of a different sort that’s aimed at Apple users as you can see below:

IMG_1566

It’s made of anodized aluminum and plastic. It looks very classy and will fit in with the other Apple gear in your bag. But it has a few tricks:

IMG_1567

First of all, it has a built in USB cable for charging they ionBank 5K which is kind of on the short side. It can be stowed away by wrapping it around the ionBank 5K. You’ll have to supply your own USB to AC adapter though, or plug it into the USB port of a computer:

Slide back one of the aluminum panels and you see this Lightning cable. That way you always have a cable for use with your iDevices. The Lightning cable is not very long however. My guess is that it is about 3.5″ or so, It also means that when stored, the cable won’t get damaged. One thing to note is that you can charge a device via the Lightning cable and the USB port at the same time.

On this side of the ionBank 5K, there are four lights (though three are lit in this picture due to the fact that I had been using it to charge devices) which gives you an idea of how much charge is left in the battery pack. If you see four lights, the ionBank 5K is fully charged. It also has a USB port to allow you to plug any device into the ionBank 5K: You’ll need to supply your own cable though.

Inside the ionBank 5K is a 5000 mAh lithium polymer battery. That makes it light, and in theory it will provide a lot of charging power. The question is how much charging power. To find out, I charged it for ten hours to get it up to a full charge. Then I went about testing it in the following manner:

  • I charged an iPhone 6 from 72% to a full charge in 47 minutes. I then checked the remaining life in the ionBank 5K and it was 3 dots which meant it had a charge level between 50% and 75%.
  • I charged an iPhone 6 from 90% to a full charge in 45 minutes. I then checked the remaining life in the ionBank 5K and it was 3 dots which meant it had a charge level between 50% and 75%.
  • I charged a ZTE Grand X 2 from 80% to a full charge in 20 minutes. I then checked the remaining life in the ionBank 5K and it was 3 dots which meant it had a charge level between 50% and 75%.
  • I charged an iPhone 6 from 88% to a full charge in 45 minutes. I then checked the remaining life in the ionBank 5K and it was 3 dots which meant it had a charge level between 50% and 75%.
  • I charged an iPhone 6 from 61% to a full charge in 55 minutes. I then checked the remaining life in the ionBank 5K and it was 3 dots which meant it had a charge level between 50% and 75%.
  • I charged my BlueAnt T2 Bluetooth headset in 25 minutes.I then checked the remaining life in the ionBank 5K and it was 2 dots which meant it had a charge level between 25% and 50%.
  • I charged an iPhone 6 from 87% to a full charge in 45 minutes. I then checked the remaining life in the ionBank 5K and it was 2 dots which meant it had a charge level between 25% and 50%.
  • I charged an iPhone 6 from 78% to a full charge in 45 minutes. I then checked the remaining life in the ionBank 5K and it was 2 dots which meant it had a charge level between 25% and 50%.
  • I charged an iPhone 6 from 46% but it didn’t get past 49% before it finally ran out of juice. It was weird that prior to this, it showed two dots which meant I should have had plenty of power left.

All of this was done over two and a half days. Clearly the ionBank 5K has the power to keep one or more devices fully charged while having power to spare. Its size and light weight make it perfect for taking on vacation or any situation where you might be away from an AC outlet, but you still need to keep your devices fully charged. But the fact that it ran out of power without waring was kind of weird. But that doesn’t stop me from saying that if you need a battery pack that will provide a lot of power, the ionBank 5K is worth looking at. It goes for $90 and you should consider it if you need to have extra power handy while you’re out and about.

Police To Hold Press Conference On Ashley Madison Hack [UPDATED x2]

Posted in Commentary with tags on August 24, 2015 by itnerd

A press release appeared early this morning announcing that Metro Toronto Police will be holding a press conference on the Ashley Madison hack at 10AM EST. It will be live-streamed and “there will also be representative of some of the Canadian and international law enforcement agencies” which I take to mean the RCMP, the Ontario Provincial Police and the FBI.

I wonder what news they have to share? Expect an update shortly after this press conference.

UPDATE: Even before this press conference comes this news that the Privacy Commissioner Of Canada is going to investigate the hack. That’s not good news for those who own Ashley Madison

UPDATE x2: This CBC story should give you a complete overview of what was discused at that this press conference. Including 2 suicides that are potentially related to this hack and a $500K reward being offered up to catch the “Impact Team.”

Lenovo Once Again Shipping Laptops With Security Issues

Posted in Commentary with tags , on August 22, 2015 by itnerd

The reasons not to ever buy computers from Lenovo have just increased with the news that their laptops have software in the BIOS that stops consumers doing a truly clean install of Windows without any Lenovo software on it. As a side effect, it exposes you to getting pwned:

The latest issue relates to a “feature” in Lenovo’s BIOS firmware that automatically downloads Lenovo software and services, even if the user has performed a clean install of Windows. Microsoft actually allows this practice, but Lenovo’s particular implementation—dubbed “Lenovo Service Engine”—led to a security vulnerability, which an independent security researcher discovered in the April to May timeframe.

In response, Microsoft has put out security guidelines for this BIOS technique, which it calls the “Windows Platform Binary Table.” Because Lenovo Service Engine doesn’t meet those guidelines, Lenovo has stripped the tool from its BIOS firmware in all PCs shipped after June. The company has also released a special disabler tool, and on July 31 released a BIOS update to remove the tool from existing PCs. Dozens of consumer laptop and desktop models are affected, but Lenovo says its Think-brand PCs are not.

This is just plain unacceptable. After this issue where they preinstalled adware on their laptops, or this issue where they knowingly shipped faulty computers to customers, or even this issue where Lenovo “accidentally” priced their computers wrong and refused to honor their price, is there any reason to ever buy any of their products? It honestly seems that this company only wants to screw you over at every opportunity that they see.

This company really needs to no longer exist.

A Third Dump Of Ashley Madison Data Has Taken Place

Posted in Commentary with tags on August 22, 2015 by itnerd

Clearly the “Impact Team” are out for the kill as a third dump of data has taken place late yesterday. According to Motherboard, this dump is to make up for the fact that the second dump of data which contained e-mails associates with ALM CEO Noel Biderman were corrupt. As for future dumps, the hackers said this:

The Impact Team, the hackers who are releasing the data and claiming responsibility for the breach, gave an update: “No guarantees on further dumps. But this 7z is corrupted so maybe another noel email dump. 40GB uncompressed.”

You can bet that Biderman is not at all thrilled at that prospect.

Extortion Attempts Targeting Ashley Madison Users Have Begun

Posted in Commentary with tags on August 21, 2015 by itnerd

It was only a matter of time before extortion artists started targeting those who used Ashely Madison. Security expert Brian Krebs broke this story on his blog. Here’s some details:

According to security firms and to a review of several emails shared with this author, extortionists already see easy pickings in the leaked AshleyMadison user database.

Earlier today I heard from Rick Romero, the information technology manager at VF IT Services, an email provider based in Milwaukee. Romero said he’s been building spam filters to block outgoing extortion attempts against others from rogue users of his email service.

Lovely. The letters say that their activities on Ashley Madison will be outed to the victim’s spouse if they don’t pay up. Here’s the kicker, they want to be paid in Bitcoin. That makes them somewhat untraceable. I have to admit that if it weren’t a crime, I’d be impressed. But as it is, the damage that the Hacking Team has unleashed upon the world has begun.

Impact Team Speaks…. And What They Say Will Blow Your Mind

Posted in Commentary on August 21, 2015 by itnerd

I’m not going to spoil this, at least not too much. But Motherboard has managed to speak to the so called “Impact Team” via e-mail. And they’ve in short said that Ashley Madison did not really try too hard to secure their site and that they were there for extended periods of time gathering info. In terms of the former, I’ll use this example:

MOTHERBOARD: How did you hack Avid Life Media? Was it hard?
The Impact Team: We worked hard to make fully undetectable attack, then got in and found nothing to bypass.

What was their security like?
Bad. Nobody was watching. No security. Only thing was segmented network. You could use Pass1234 from the internet to VPN to root on all servers.

That’s not just bad, that’s just pathetic. It’s as if Ashely Madison wanted to get pwned. Either that, or they didn’t care about IT security and only cared about the money. That should make that class action lawsuit really easy to win. I encourage you to read the entire interview because if it’s true, and I’m of the opinion that it likely is, then Ashely Madison and those who own the site deserve everything they get.

Review: EarSkinz

Posted in Products with tags , on August 21, 2015 by itnerd

A unique item that was in my iStore goodie bag was a pair of EarSkinz. They are silicone covers that slip over your Apple EarPods so that they fit more comfortably. Now the only person who could have tested this for me was my wife as she uses EarPods when she runs rather than using her RHA MA450 earphones. After I installed them, they looked like this:

IMG_1571

They come in a number of color options. So you can choose something that works for you. The real question is do they work? According to her, the answer is yes. Her EarPods stay in her ears a lot better since the EarSkinz were installed. Prior to the EarSkinz, the EarPods would fall out during her runs because of sweat. That no longer happens. They also feel more comfortable in her ears. So I will say that they work as advertised. They’re $11 USD a pair. If you like your Apple EarPods, consider this a worthwhile investment to make them even better.

BREAKING: Ashely Madison Gets Sued [UPDATED]

Posted in Commentary with tags , on August 20, 2015 by itnerd

Things just went from bad to worse for Ashely Madison. After today’s latest massive data dump comes the news that Ashely Madison is facing a class action lawsuit:

Two law firms have filed a national class-action lawsuit on behalf of all Canadians who subscribed to AshleyMadison.com.

The action is being brought against Avid Dating Life Inc. and Avid Life Media Inc., the corporations that run the infidelity website.

The plaintiff in the lawsuit is Eliot Shore, an Ottawa resident and disabled widower who became single after his wife of 30 years died of breast cancer. He joined the site, but did not meet another subscriber in person, the law firms say.

The class action, led by firms Charney Lawyers and Sutts, Strosberg LLP, is not being brought against the Impact Team hackers who attacked AshleyMadison.com.

The law firms have a joint press release for you to read located here. Since this is a class action lawsuit, those affected can join the class and make life really miserable for Ashely Madison. You’ll note that the so called “Impact Team” aren’t being sued. That’s likely because the lawyers feel that the only people responsible for this mess are the people who run Ashely Madison.

Expect more lawsuits to come.

UPDATE: The Lawyers behind this lawsuit have a website set up here.
