Ballmer Will Keep XP Around Past June 30th If YOU Ask Him To

Posted in Commentary with tags , , on April 24, 2008 by itnerd

Everybody’s favorite chair throwing CEO Steve Ballmer said in a news conference yesterday that he’s open to the idea of Windows XP sticking around past the June 30th end of life date. The only thing is, nobody has asked him to keep it around:

“XP will hit an end-of-life. We have announced one. If customer feedback varies, we can always wake up smarter, but right now, we have a plan for end-of-life for new XP shipments,”

So, isn’t the fact that Vista sales suck have not set the world on fire the big hint that people want XP? Or maybe the hint that he’s looking for is in one of those infamous e-mails that’s part of the “Vista Capable” lawsuit (like this one, this one, and this one too).  Or perhaps he should heed his own thoughts:

“Ballmer said most consumers are choosing to buy the current version of Windows, Vista. Many acquire Vista by default, however, since most new PCs ship with the operating system. Businesses have been slower to catch on, as many have clung to Windows XP and older versions of Windows.”

The fact that consumers are going towards Vista may have something to do with the fact that Vista is being force fed down the throats of users at every Best Buy on planet Earth as that is the only thing you can buy in that store and stores like it. Basically, consumers aren’t given a choice. (Of course you can avoid that problem by following the advice that I posted here previously). If they were given a choice at Best Buy, I think they’d be buying XP boxes.

Business however are smarter. They don’t want to risk having a “not ready for prime time” OS send their business straight to hell in a handbasket. They’ll run XP for as long as they possibly can. Given that the money Microsoft makes from businesses is higher than the money they make from consumers, it may be in their best interests to keep XP alive to keep the revenue stream healthy. But, as I mentioned in this posting, Ballmer wants Vista to be the dominant desktop OS at any cost.

I’m calling it now. XP will live past June 30th. Trust me on this one.

Microsoft Loses Appeal Of “Vista Capable” Lawsuit

Posted in Commentary with tags , , on April 23, 2008 by itnerd

Let the embarrassing e-mails flow again! This article from ComputerWorld lets the world know that the US Ninth Circuit Court has shot Microsoft’s appeal out of the sky. According to the article, one of the things that Microsoft argued was:

“In papers filed last month, Microsoft petitioned the Ninth Circuit Court to hear its challenge and asked Pechman to suspend the class-action case while the appeal was heard by the higher court. The company argued that continuing the lawsuit might mean new disclosures of insider e-mails, which could “jeopardize Microsoft’s goodwill” and “disrupt Microsoft’s relationships with its business partners.”

Hmmmm…. I think they mean e-mails like this one, this one, and oh yeah this one too. The appeals court bought that argument and listened to the appeal, but in the end didn’t see things Microsoft’s way. So it’s time to go on with the discovery phase with the trial, which means more embarrassing e-mails for you to read.

At this point Microsoft should really just fold up their tent, settle out of court, and move on. That’s what most rational companies would do given what has already happened. But of course they won’t. Steve Ballmer and company are hell bent to make Vista the dominant desktop OS come hell or high water. This despite the fact Vista sucks has had some teething pains to say the least. So they’ll fight this to the end and I honestly think they’ll not only lose the case, but a lot of credibility along with it.

Ballmer Says Vista “A Work In Progress”

Posted in Commentary with tags , , on April 18, 2008 by itnerd

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer was quoted in this article as saying that Vista a “work in progress,” acknowledging some of the mistakes Microsoft made in rolling out the latest version of Windows and hinting that they’re considering keeping XP on the shelves a bit longer for people who still don’t want to upgrade (like MOST PEOPLE).

“In the meantime, we have some customers — a lot of customers — using Vista. A lot of customers. And we have a lot of customers that are choosing to stay with Windows XP. And as long as those are both important options, we will be sensitive and we will listen and we will hear that. I got a piece of mail from a customer the other day that talked about not being able to get XP anymore. We responded, XP is still available. And I know we’re going to continue to get feedback from people on how long XP should be available. We’ve got some opinions on that, we’ve expressed our views.”

The only reason to keep XP on the shelves is because the revenue stream from Vista isn’t as good as Ballmer had hoped. So he needs some way to keep the cash coming in or his shareholders will get really mad at him (read: He’ll get replaced). After all your only other choice if XP goes bye-bye is to buy a Mac.

Oh wait… People ARE buying Macs in ever increasing numbers according to this story. Seeing those numbers must make Ballmer want to throw a few chairs across the room.

Vista Capable Lawsuit On Hold – No Embarrasing E-mails For You!

Posted in Commentary with tags , , on April 9, 2008 by itnerd

A lawsuit against Microsoft that’s already unveiled several juicy tidbits about the company is on hold according to this article that I found this morning. The class action status of the case is being challenged by Microsoft and as a result, the release of those juicy e-mails that you’ve been reading over the last few weeks are going to stop for a while. Which is good for Microsoft as those e-mails really made them look bad to say the least. One would think that Steve Ballmer was running out of chairs to throw as well.

Automatic Vista SP1 Update Coming Next Week – For Realz!

Posted in Products with tags , , on April 7, 2008 by itnerd

I just noticed this post on the Vista Team Blog that indicates that users should start seeing SP1 show up in Windows Update starting next week. Not only that, but the Update Product Team Blog notes that the endless reboot problem has been fixed as well. I plan on going to an earlier version of my Vista virtual machine that lives on my MacBook Pro to see the update process at work. If I see anything interesting, I’ll let you know.

Windows 7 Coming “Sometime Next Year” Says Gates – Is Vista That Bad?

Posted in Commentary with tags , , on April 4, 2008 by itnerd

In another sign that Vista sucks Microsoft is advancing the state of the art, Bill Gates has publicly mused that the currently codenamed “Windows 7” may ship sometime next year. Wow. That’s way faster than the 2010 or 2011 timeframe that has been mentioned by Microsoft for a while now. Of course that may just be Gates being completely out of the loop at Microsoft as he’s really not involved in the day to day activities of that company anymore since “the chair throwing one” took over. Or it could be a sign of how bad things are.

I suspect we’ll find out shortly.

BREAKING NEWS: Windows XP Lives Past June 30th! Sort Of.

Posted in Commentary with tags , on April 3, 2008 by itnerd

I’ve just seen the news that Windows XP is going to be around past June 30th. Here’s the catch: It will only be sold for what are called “Ultra Low Cost PCs” rather than for any type of computer. Ultra Low Cost PCs are computers with slower processors, smaller screens, and in many cases flash memory for storage, rather than a traditional hard drive (think Asus EeePC). With the sort of capabilities of that these PCs have (or lack of capabilities), Vista will pretty much kill these machines. I’m guessing that Asus “encouraged” Microsoft to do this, but I have no proof of that of course.

One has to wonder if this will eventually extend to every machine if Vista’s adoption rate is still slow in June….

Vista Gets Owned In Hacking Contest. LINUX Remains Unbroken.

Posted in Commentary, Security with tags , , on April 1, 2008 by itnerd

A week after OS X got hacked at CanSecWest, Windows Vista fell to hackers participating in the PWN2OWN contest. Shane Macaulay (who ironically hacked OS X in last year’s contest) successfully compromised a fully patched Vista system using a Flash exploit. For his trouble, he managed to score $5000 and a Fujitsu U810. Not a bad days work. While it didn’t take two minutes like Charlie Miller’s hack of OS X, it still proves that two mainstream operating systems are vulnerable to hackers. As it stands, Ubuntu LINUX is still unhacked. It will be interesting to see if that continues to be the case.

Did Intel Come Up With “Vista Capable?” No Sir!

Posted in Commentary with tags , , , on March 28, 2008 by itnerd

Another one of those Vista Capable Lawsuit e-mails just came to light. And this one is good! According to this article from CRN, long before Intel pressured Microsoft into helping it to dump low end chipsets, Microsoft itself came up with “Vista Capable” at the urging of Best Buy. According to the article, Vista marketing director Rajesh Srinivasan and others devised the now infamous two-tiered Vista Ready/Vista Capable plan- the latter category known to be incapable of handling the ultra cool Vista Aero visual interface because of crappy Intel integrated graphics support-in the summer of 2005. Srinivasan pitched the idea to Best Buy as early as August 2005, and Best Buy was apparently cool with it.

So, everybody’s blaming Intel, but it looks like Microsoft did itself in all by itself. Stay tuned, there’s likely to be more revelations as more e-mails come to light.

Does Vista Crash A Lot For You? Maybe It’s Your NVidia Drivers?

Posted in Commentary with tags , , , on March 28, 2008 by itnerd

Those e-mail that are part of the Vista Capable Lawsuit are generating all sorts of interesting details. Today’s factoid is the fact that NVidia graphics card drivers cause 28.8% of all crashes with Vista. That number is higher than Vista issues traced to Microsoft software. Wowzers! When you’re worse than Microsoft, you really suck. It’s no surprise that NVidia is now facing a class action lawsuit over this. All of this will really makes me think twice the next time I walk into the computer store to buy a video card.
