#Dieselgate Continues To Get Worse…. And Worse…. And Worse

Posted in Commentary with tags on September 28, 2015 by itnerd

Martin Winterkorn who got bounced from being the CEO of Volkswagen because of the ongoing nightmare involving diesel powered cars and cheating on emission tests work up to some really bad news today. German authorities are going to investigate him over this scandal:

The investigation will concentrate on the suspicion of fraud committed through the sale of vehicles with manipulated emissions data, and aims to determine who was responsible, prosecutors in Braunschweig said in a statement.

In the German system, anyone can file a criminal complaint with prosecutors, who are then obliged to examine them and decide whether there is enough evidence to open a formal investigation.

In this case, following the revelations about the rigged tests, prosecutors in Braunschweig, near VW’s headquarters in Wolfsburg, received about a dozen complaints, including one from Volkswagen itself, said spokeswoman Julia Meyer.

Lovely. I hope he has a good lawyer. One wonders how much worse this can get. Oh. It just got worse as the news is out that 2.1 million Audi cars are affected by this:

The Audi models that need to be upgraded to meet emissions regulations include the A1, A3, A4, A5, A6 sedans, the TT roadster and the Q3 and Q5 SUVs with 1.6-liter and 2-liter diesel engines, de Graeve said.

Of the 2.1 million autos, 577,000 are registered in Germany, 847,000 elsewhere in western Europe and 13,000 cars in North America. Audi, which is poised to lose its rank this year as the world’s second-biggest luxury carmaker to Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz, sold 1.74 million vehicles in 2014.

This could not have come at a worse time for the Audi brand as they were really starting to make inroads into the North American luxury market. I suspect that this will stall those efforts. Perhaps even kill them.

I wonder what’s next in this story?

Goodbye Toyota Matrix…. Hello Hyundai Tucson

Posted in Commentary with tags , on September 28, 2015 by itnerd

Our latest problem with our Toyota Matrix in regards to excessive oil consumption has been a real pain and it’s also been incredibly stressful for my wife and I. It led us to begin the process of looking for a new vehicle to replace it and we had deleted the Lexus NX200t from our list of contenders and added the Acura RDX, followed by my craptastic experience at a local Acura dealership when I went to see the RDX. Since then we got the results of the oil consumption test that Toyota wanted us to run. Which was that the Matrix consumed oil, but it was not bad enough by Toyota’s standards to be fixed on Toyota’s dime which didn’t exactly go over well in our household. Thus we started to look at all the contenders on the list at dealerships which included taking test drives as well as evaluate the dealerships. Let me tell you, that was not fun. The fact is that the car buying experience sucks. Lots of pressure. Lots of stress. Not nearly enough ability to make an informed decision. I should also mention that during all of this, my wife and I were literally bombarded by phone calls from any Toyota dealership that we had been to. For the record, there have been five in total that we’ve either gotten service done at, or we’ve bought parts from. What was interesting was that they were calling us to get us out of the Matrix and into pretty much anything else in the Toyota, Scion, or Lexus lineup. If that wasn’t enough, they all specifically mentioned that they’d give us “top dollar” for our Toyota Matrix. The fact that all of them started calling us after our oil consumption results came back has to be a coincidence. After all, this was happening at the time of year where dealerships are clearing out their inventory. So, that combined with the fact that my wife and I had a seven year old car which makes us a good target for a new one is a plausible reason why we were seeing this influx of calls. Though the conspiracy theorist in me does make me think of more nefarious reasons behind these phone calls.

All that changed when I got the opportunity to review the new Hyundai Tucson via Greg Carrasco of Hyundai Of Oakville who’ve I’ve not only interviewed twice, but I’ve been on his radio show several times. During my discussion with him, I discussed the problems with the Toyota Matrix and getting Toyota Canada to properly address it. I also asked him if I was overacting to the situation. He basically was dead honest with me and told me I wasn’t as well as going into a great deal of depth about what what wrong with the situation, and what my options were to deal with it. I really appreciated his honesty and it allowed my wife and I to pull the trigger on immediately dumping the Toyota Matrix.

Now, why the Hyundai Tucson? In short, we were impressed by it in a multitude of areas when we had it to do our review (As my wife is a big influence on what I write. Thus every review is a team effort). It was refined, luxurious, powerful and well built and had all the options that we wanted at a price that was good value for money. Plus there were three factors that really tipped the scales towards Hyundai. First, there was no, as in zero mention in the user manual that oil consumption was “normal.” That alone was worth the price of admission given our recent experiences. But the more important reason was the JD Power And Associates had Hyundai at #4 in initial quality this past June. Finally, it’s backed by a five year warranty. You don’t put a warranty of that length on the table if you don’t feel that your product is good. And JD Power thinks it’s good. So with all of that, we were willing to take the leap of faith on a Hyundai Tucson 1.6 Limited which we picked up this past Saturday. We’ve only had it for a couple of days, but we believe that we’ve made the right choice. It’s already been on a long drive to the remains of the World War II era spy school known as “Camp-X” just east of Toronto. That allowed us to become used to the vehicle and discover a few extra things about it that were not covered in the review that is currently online. Thus I’ll have an update to the review of the Tucson later this week.

At this time, my wife and I would like to thank a few people at Hyundai for making this very, very painless. First up is Greg Carrasco who I have to applaud his honesty as well as working very hard to facilitate everything and to get the best trade in value for out ailing Toyota Matrix as well as get us the best sale price for the Tucson possible. Second, Tanya Ventura gets our thanks because she made the paper work and all the setting up of the financing easy. Finally, Abdul Ghafoor gets a shout out as he worked hard to get us the vehicle we wanted and to make sure that we were ready to go this past Saturday when we went to pick it up. All of these people combined to make purchasing this vehicle easy and painless and they are examples of how car dealers should sell cars. Every other car dealer should take notes.

Now it’s time to enjoy our new vehicle and breathe a sigh a relief because our nightmare with the Toyota Matrix and the lack of will by Toyota Canada to properly address our oil consumption issues is over.

Volkswagen Warned About #Dieselgate Like Tricks Years Ago….. And They Have A New CEO

Posted in Commentary with tags on September 27, 2015 by itnerd

This isn’t going to help Volkswagen’s image…. Though I’m not sure at this point what would. The Toronto Star is reporting that Volkswagen was warned about the sort of emissions cheating that they have been accused of doing years ago:

German weekly Bild am Sonntag reported that VW’s internal investigation has found a 2007 letter from parts supplier Bosch warning Volkswagen not to use the software during regular operation.

Separately, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung reported that a Volkswagen technician raised concerns about illegal practices in connection with emissions levels in 2011. The weekly also cited VW’s internal investigators.

A spokesman for Volkswagen declined to comment on the reports, saying that as a matter of principle the company wouldn’t comment on what he called “rumours and speculation.”

“Volkswagen is working with all its strength to conduct a thorough and merciless investigation of this matter,” Andreas Lampersbach said in an email.

The magazines in question are well respected ones. Thus I am personally more likely to believe them. But that’s just me.

By the way, they have a new sucker CEO:

Matthias Mueller, head of the Porsche sports-car brand, is to take over as Volkswagen’s chief executive with the unenviable task of repairing the automaker’s battered reputation.

Mueller, 62, had been widely tipped to succeed Martin Winterkorn, who quit on Wednesday after admitting the world’s largest automaker had installed software designed to cheat emissions testing on its diesel vehicles.

Volkswagen’s supervisory board choose Mueller on Friday, turning to an insider who has helped revitalize the Porsche brand.

He’s a braver man than I as I am not sure I would take that job under these circumstances. He’s the one who’s going to have to answer for all of this, plus he’s got the toughest job in the world which is to save VW from this mess. Perhaps he can go to GM CEO Mary Barra for advice? She had just been on the job as CEO for days when the ignition switch fiasco broke. Since them GM seems to be all right for the most part. So I guess there’s hope for VW yet.

At the tail end of last month they unveiled a new kind of screen protector, the Olixar Quicktap. The Quicktap combines the protection of a tempered glass screen protector with some novel functionality – the ability to tap buttons near the top of your screen without needing to stretch your hand. This is accomplished through active screen elements, which transmit the impact of your touch from the bottom of the phone (below the screen and to either side of the home button) to the top. Today, they’re announcing that the Quicktap screen protectors will also be available for the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, Apple’s latest smartphones.

Citrix Named a Leader in Server-Hosted Virtual Desktops

Posted in Commentary with tags on September 27, 2015 by itnerd

Citrix was this week named a leader in Virtal Desktops (VDI) by Forrester Research. Forrester noted that Citrix set itself apart from the seven other companies surveyed because of its ability to provide a superior user experience, the completeness of its offerings, and the research group’s confidence in Citrix’s solutions:

According to the report, the “XenDesktop VDI offering is distinctive at several levels, from the user experience with Citrix Receiver endpoint clients that offer native HDX protocol support on all device and OS platforms to rich 3D graphics and multiple 4K monitor support and sophisticated features for multimedia and videoconferencing performance.” The report also noted that Citrix offers a “clever Wi-Fi-based mouse that works with the Citrix Receiver on the iOS platform.”

Citrix also received the highest scores for strategy and current offering, and is the only solution in the evaluation to offer FIPS 140-2 compliance, key encryption standard required by Federal government agencies. The report states that “on the back end, application layering and personal vDisks help customers make better use of storage resources with pooled desktop instances, and customers can deploy them on Citrix, VMware or Microsoft hypervisors – a significant advantage.”

The report notes that “Citrix consolidated its platforms in 2014, and finally has a single management console for the whole VDI stack” and that “XenDesktop is also part of the most complete suite of digital workspace delivery systems technologies in the industry, which includes XenApp for proven session-hosted desktop capabilities if desired.”

Applauding XenDesktop’s capabilities, they also noted the Citrix X1 Mouse and XenApp as aiding in providing the most complete suite of digital workspace delivery systems technologies in the industry.

BlackBerry’s Earnings Disappoint…. Shares Nosedive… & An Android Phone Is Coming

Posted in Commentary with tags on September 25, 2015 by itnerd

Today is not a good day for BlackBerry. They posted [Warning: PDF] their their Q2 numbers and they don’t look good. Here’s the highlights, or low lights as the case may be:

  • They reported $51-million (U.S.) of net income for the three months ended Aug. 29. That’s better than the net loss of $207-million a year ago. But it fell short of adjusted expectations with a posted loss of $66-million or 13 cents per share. The street was expecting 9 cents per share.
  • Revenue dropped 46 per cent to $490-million. That is well below analyst estimates of $611-million.

The net result is that BlackBerry shares were down almost 5% in pre-market trading, but have recovered since. Maybe the news of an Android powered smartphone is helping them. Called the BlackBerry Priv, its first BlackBerry smartphone that will be able to run Android as well as BlackBerry 10:

Priv will be the solution for smartphone users who are learning daily of the lack of privacy they have on their current devices. Priv will be the answer for former BlackBerry users who miss the physical keyboard but needed apps. And, we’re responding to current – and prospective – BlackBerry users who need it all: choice, innovation, security, privacy and productivity.

What’s unique about our Android phone is that we are collaborating with Google to bring the best of BlackBerry security and productivity to the Android ecosystem.

It should be interesting to see if this helps or hurts BlackBerry as I expect that there are some BlackBerry loyalists who are having a heart attack because of this news.

iPhone 6S And 6S Plus Sales Begin World Wide

Posted in Commentary with tags on September 25, 2015 by itnerd

iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus launch day has officially arrived on planet Earth and many people are in line for Apple’s newest iDevice as evidenced by these Tweets. Plus there’s the annual iPhone drop test that takes place every time Apple puts out a new iDevice:

Why people would stand in line, pay all that money for an iPhone and drop it is beyond me.

Another tradition that happens on this day is Canadian carriers e-mailing me with their launch day details. This year, Telus was first in line with this:

“The day has finally arrived! The new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, the most advanced iPhones ever, are now available for purchase online at telus.com/iPhone and in stores across Canada. iPhone 6s 16GB will be available starting at $400 and iPhone 6s Plus 16GB will be available starting at $530, both on a two-year TELUS Your Choice plan. The iPad mini 4 16GB is also available at TELUS today, starting at $100 and the iPad mini 4 64GB will be available starting at $210, both on a two-year TELUS Easy Tablet offer.  iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and iPhone 5s will also be available. For additional product and pricing details, visit telus.com/iPhone or telus.com/iPad.

Value-added perks make TELUS the best national carrier for the iPhone. TELUS is the only carrier to offer AppleCare+ with flexible monthly payment options which extends coverage from the original purchase date to two years – including coverage for up to two incidents of accidental damage. We also have something for customers who want to take their iOS skills to the next level: our unique Learning Centre Specialists are ready to teach new TELUS iPhone and iPad owners how to get the most out of their shiny new devices through free and customized one-on-one training sessions.”

I’ll update this story with the details that other carriers send me.

So, are you lusting for a new iPhone? Or are you sitting this out. Please leave a comment and share your thoughts.

If You’re Wondering Why You Haven’t Saved Any Space Via iOS 9, The Secret Is Out…

Posted in Commentary with tags on September 24, 2015 by itnerd

You might remember when Apple announced iOS 9 they trumpeted a feature called “App Thinning” which would only download the parts of the app that your iDevice needed to save space. You may also remember when I reviewed iOS 9 I said this:

One thing that Apple made a big deal of when iOS 9 was announced is that it would take less space when installing or updating and you would have more space on your iDevice afterwards thanks to “app thinning” which only downloads the bits of the app that your iDevice needs. That’s of interest to me as I have a 16GB iPhone 6 because I am cheap. Now the over the air update that I did was just over a 1.3GB in size so it was smaller than previous iOS updates. But I did not have any more space free than I did under iOS 8 when I was done installing iOS 9. Strange.

Now I know the reason. In a post to its developer website today, Apple informed developers that an issue with iCloud backups prompted the deactivation of “app slicing,” which is one of three technologies that make up “app thinning.” There’s no ETA as to when it will be reactivated which means that those who were hoping to gain some space back on their iDevice can’t. That sucks.

Of course Apple could simply add removable storage to iDevices or stop making 16GB models which would make this whole discussion moot. But that would just make too much sense.
