RIM’s Numbers Disappoints….. Jim Balsillie Quits…. RIM Up For Sale…. Sound The Death Knell

Posted in Commentary with tags , on March 29, 2012 by itnerd

Today was a big day for RIM. First, their Q4 and full year numbers were released today. In a word the numbers sucked. Here’s the highlights

  • RIM fell short of revenue expectations of US$4.57-billion, reporting just US$4.19-billion in Q4 revenues
  • RIM’s earnings per share was in line with expectations a 81¢ US.
  • Quarterly smartphone shipments of 11.1 million fell short of expectations of 11.2-million.
  • PlayBook tablet sales of more than 500,000 were vastly ahead of even the more bullish analyst expectations of about 350,000.

Oh well. At least PlayBook sales were good. Of course the fact that they were heavily discounted had something to do with that. The full results can be read here [Warning: PDF].

Now here’s the second and third pieces of news. Jim Balsillie who was until recently one of the two CEOs of this company resigned from RIM’s board along with two other executives. Not only that, the company is going to do “strategic review” of their business. That’s code for the company is up for sale.

Consider this to be the beginning of the end for RIM. This company will be sliced, diced, and sold to try and maximize shareholder value.

Bottom line: Time to go buy an iPhone.

Blackberry Topped By iPhone In Canada….. The Death Sprial Of RIM Continues

Posted in Commentary with tags , on March 25, 2012 by itnerd

I once worked with a master sales person who said that to be really successful, you have to be able to sell in your own backyard. Assuming that’s true, RIM isn’t successful as a recent report shows that the Blackberry is being outsold by the iPhone by almost a million phones in Canada. That’s not a good stat for RIM as it’s banked on being the hometown hero for some time. Face it RIM, the iPhone is simply a better product. Unless you step up your game and produce a smart phone that can seriously compete with the iPhone, your days are numbered.

RIM Losing Government Customers…. The Death Spiral Continues

Posted in Commentary with tags , on February 29, 2012 by itnerd

It’s a bad day for RIM. The news has hit the Interwebs that Blackberry smartphones are being replaced by iPhones by the ATF:

“We’re going to delete the BlackBerry from the mix,” Rick Holgate said, adding the ATF will start replacing its 3,800 BlackBerrys in March. Most of the BlackBerrys, including the ones used by ATF field agents, will be replaced with iPhones, Holgate told Politico. He expects the process to be complete in a year.

But a RIM mouthpiece spokesperson who has clearly been drinking the Kool Aid had this spin on the situation:

RIM spokesperson Rebecca Freiburger defended the BlackBerry, saying there are still plenty of government bodies using it.

“RIM continues to work closely with its more than one million government customers in North America who rely on the unmatched security of the BlackBerry platform,” said Freiburger, who also touted RIM’s reputation for security.

“BlackBerry smartphones running on the powerful new BlackBerry 7 operating systems (OS) have been awarded FIPS 140-2 certification by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the Communications Security Establishment Canada (CSEC). The BlackBerry PlayBook remains the only tablet certified for use by U.S. government agencies,” Freiburger said.

She of course is failing to acknowledge the fact that the above argument is irrelevant to those who are dumping them. Also consider that the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Haliburton among others are dumping the Blackberry and there’s only one conclusion. RIM is dying. If that’s isn’t enough for you consider this:

Meanwhile Tuesday, UBS analyst Phillip Huang panned RIM’s presence at the Mobile World Congress, calling it “underwhelming.”

“As we expected, and not a surprise, RIM’s presence at MWC was underwhelming with no new product announcements, no further clarity on the timing of BB10 devices,” Huang wrote in his research report.

“The show reinforced the uphill battle RIM faces in reversing its position in a market that continues to evolve at a torrid pace and with formidable competitors that include Google, Apple and Microsoft,” Huang added. He also pointed to growing momentum from Microsoft in the smartphone market.

“It was interesting to learn from Microsoft that the number of apps now supported in its marketplace has increased to 65k from 10k a year-ago, compared to about 60k apps for RIM (versus about 30k a year-ago),” said Huang.

It sucks to be RIM. It truly does.

RIM Releases Update For Playbook….. Too Little Too Late?

Posted in Commentary with tags , on February 21, 2012 by itnerd

The long awaited update to the Blackberry Playbook hit the streets today. Here’s what the updates give Playbook users:

  • Native email, contacts and calendar functionality.
  • RIM’s Android app player is finally on board
  • Video chat has been enhanced
  • BlackBerry Bridge has been updated
  • Social networking such as Facebook and Twitter have been added

You can see the full list of updates here. From Playbook users I’ve spoken to, it’s a welcome update. The question is, is it too little too late? After all, the iPad outsells the Playbook something like 100 to 1 and if you believe the rumors, the iPad 3 is about to ship on March 7th. That will make it even more difficult for RIM to compete.

We’ll see what happens. I suspect it won’t take long to find out which way this goes.

RIM CEO Admits Apple And Google Winning Smartphone War In The US

Posted in Commentary with tags on January 28, 2012 by itnerd

Perhaps RIM finally has a clue that they’re in trouble? I’m saying that because RIM’s new CEO Thorsten Heins admitted in a recent interview that they’re losing the smartphone war to Apple and Google in the US marketplace:

“It hurts. It hurts me to see us losing market share in the U.S. There was a paradigm shift, and we did not shift with it…” Heins said. “I know we’ve made mistakes, and I know I’m in for a fight.”

They question is, what is he going to do about it?

“We want to stop the bleeding,” he said. Heins emphasized RIM’s international growth, and noted the company has taken its subscriber base from 50 million to 75 million in a year.

Heins made it clear the company is working to protect its installed customer base and plans a major program to encourage existing Blackberry users to switch to its newest phones, which use its Blackberry 7 operating system.

He would not elaborate on details but said the promotional effort would not be undertaken at a loss to the company, and that carriers are working with it on a program that could include higher end data plans.

Good luck with that. I still say that RIM is dead. But they are free to prove me wrong (though they won’t).

RIM Tries To Reboot Itself By Naming New CEO

Posted in Commentary with tags , on January 23, 2012 by itnerd

Early this morning, it was announced Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis stepped down as the co-CEOs of RIM and were replaced by COO Thorsten Heins. Balsillie and Lazaridis will still be on the board though. A pair of videos from the new CEO then appeared on YouTube. Here they are for your viewing pleasure:

What do I think of this change? There’s really nothing to see here as all RIM has done is rearrange the deck chairs on the Titanic. RIM is still a sinking ship that has no new products based on the new Blackberry OS until the latter half of 2012 and is seeing its market share erode as RIM users migrate to Android and iOS devices. Until they fix those issues, it doesn’t matter who’s at the top of the food chain at RIM.

I will wish Heins good luck though, because he’s really going to need it.

Review: iSpeech Translator For BlackBerry

Posted in Products with tags , on January 16, 2012 by itnerd

Another one of the free apps that RIM gave away to make up for their multi-day outage last year was iSpeech Translator. In short this app allows you to translate speech using your voice, or by translating e-mail or text messages. It works with Catalan, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Spanish, Swedish, and Traditional Chinese.

So how well does it work? I tested it by translating simple phrases like “can you direct me to the subway” from English to Italian and having a native Italian speaker listen to the results. Assuming that it recognizes your voice (my voice worked well, but an associate with a heavy English accent didn’t do so well), it translates quite well. I repeated that with someone who spoke Mandirin and got similar results. So if you’re traveling and you need to ask for directions, this could be of value to you. There are two catches though. One is that you need an active data connection. Not a big deal. The second is that as I type this owners of OS 7 BlackBerries can’t use this app. Hopefully that gets fixed. Other than those two issues, I think this app is worth taking a look at.

If you have feedback of your own, leave a note below.

Are People Lining Up To Buy RIM?

Posted in Commentary with tags , , , on December 22, 2011 by itnerd

RIM may be down in the dumps at the moment, but their stock took a 10% bump yesterday on news that several companies might be after them:

Microsoft and Nokia have been named as potential buyers of Research In Motion by The Wall Street Journal, which on Wednesday reported that the two companies had in recent months discussed of a joint bid for the struggling BlackBerry maker.

The Journal report comes on the heels of a Reuters article from earlier in the week that identified Amazon as a potential RIM suitor before being rebuffed by a company that “prefers to fix its problems on its own.”

Here’s the thing. RIM’s problems need immediate attention. The best way to fix their problems might be to sell to someone who can fix their issues better than the two CEOs who run the company at the moment. Perhaps they should seriously consider a takeover?

Thoughts?

The Death Spiral Of RIM Continues

Posted in Commentary with tags on December 16, 2011 by itnerd

If it wasn’t clear that RIM wasn’t already in deep trouble, it should be now. RIM released their Q3 report [Warning: PDF] yesterday and the results speak for themselves:

  • RIM made $5.2 billion last quarter while recording earnings of $1.27 per share, or $667 million. That was on reduced guidance.
  • RIM shipped 14.1 million smartphones in the quarter.
  • Net income dropped to $285 million from $911 million in the same quarter last year. That factors in the $485 million charge related to unsold PlayBook inventory in the third fiscal quarter.
  • Speaking of Playbooks. RIM only sold 150000 of them in Q3.
  • RIM has forecast EPS of between $0.80 and $0.95 in Q4 compared to Wall Street’s $1.08 expectation
  • RIM has forecast revenue of $4.6 billion and $4.98 billion compared to Wall Street’s $5.12 billion expectation.

In a bit of less than stunning news, RIM co-CEO’s Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis will both take $1 salaries until the ship gets turned around. It’s not stunning because most of their compensation is likely in stock (albeit stock that has been hammered over the last year) which means that Balsillie is free to try and buy another NHL team at his leisure. The stunning news came in the announcement that RIM won’t be shipping their Blackberry 10 phones until the latter half of 2012. That my friends is a #fail because by then Apple and Google will be so far ahead of RIM, nobody will care what they come out with even if it is amazing from a tech standpoint.

Expect investors to whip out their Android or iOS phones and key in the word “sell” today.

RIM In The News For All The Wrong Reasons

Posted in Commentary with tags on December 5, 2011 by itnerd

Gee, I take a break for a few weeks and all hell breaks loose at Research In Motion. First there’s a profit warning that was issued last week due to the non-existent sales of the Playbook tablet:

On Friday it announced a $485 million pre-tax writedown on the inventory and said full-year profit would not meet earlier forecasts.

That’s bad. This is worse:

On Friday, RIM said it had sold just 150,000 PlayBooks – one for every 74 iPads sold by Apple in its last quarter.

That has #fail written all over it. It’s enough to drive RIM employees to drink.

Oh wait, apparently that’s happened as two RIM execs went on a bit of a bender on an Air Canada flight to China. Here’s what happened next:

Forty-five-year-old George Campbell of Conestogo and 38-year-old Paul Alexander Wilson of Kitchener have been ordered to pay restitution totalling $71,757 after pleading guilty to mischief.

The pair were apparently so intoxicated and belligerent on their packed Toronto to Beijing flight that the crew had to physically restrain them, according to the Richmond RCMP.

One report, from a fellow passenger, said they had to be handcuffed to seats. The pilot decided to turn the plane around when it was north of Alaska, landing the plane in Vancouver at around 10:20 p.m. Monday.

They drunken duo have since been fired by RIM. But the bad news doesn’t end there. RIM’s top guy in Indonesia is facing charges from the government after more than 90 people were hurt when chaos broke out during the launch of RIM’s BlackBerry 9790 in Jakarta.:

But those line-ups turned into a stampede. Numerous people passed out in the crush, and several were hospitalized. “After the event, staff from RIM, together with others involved in the event, visited Hospital Jakarta to extend our support and sympathy to those injured,” RIM said in a news release on Dec. 2.

On Monday, a Reuters news service report said Indonesian police were getting ready to lay charges against a RIM executive involved in the Jakarta promotional event. The company only said that “no RIM employees have been charged and that the company is co-operating with the Indonesia law enforcement.”

You have to feel for RIM as it doesn’t seem like the bad news is going to end.
