Unlocked iPhones Available In The US

Posted in Commentary with tags , on June 14, 2011 by itnerd

Americans are going gaga over the fact that iPhones are now available unlocked (meaning that they’re not tied to AT&T) as of today. Of course, Canadians have had unlocked iPhones for some time now. But this is a huge deal for Americans. Why. Simple, if you travel you can buy a local SIM card and avoid roaming charges. Or you can have your choice of domestic carrier, meaning if you know think that AT&T sucks isn’t your best choice, you can go to T-Mobile (even though AT&T wants to buy them).

The price to enter the unlocked universe is steep, but it might be worth it.

Lawsuit Filed Over iPhone Tracking Circus…. And It Gets Worse For El Jobso

Posted in Commentary with tags , , , on April 26, 2011 by itnerd

You knew this was coming the second the news about the fact that the iPhone and iPad tracks your movement and stores it in an unencrypted file. A federal lawsuit has been filed over this whole affair:

The suit against Apple, which was filed Monday in Florida, is seeking class-action status and accuses Apple of using the GPS feature on iOS-based devices or cell-tower triangulation to pinpoint user location and then stores that data in an unencrypted format, all without the consent or knowledge of the user.

“All iPhones log, record and store users’ locations based on latitude and longitude alongside a timestamp. The iPhones store this information in a file called “consolidated.db” or something similar. Apple intentionally began recording this information with the release of its iOS 4 operating system in June 2010. Apple uses a cell-tower triangulation to obtain user location. Recording Your Moves. Alternatively, Apple may use global positioning system (GPS) data to obtain user location,” the suit alleges.

Lovely. It likely doesn’t help that a patent filed by Apple makes it really hard for them to claim that this was a mistake. Oh yeah. If that’s not enough, South Korea, Italy, Germany and other countries are all looking into this mess. This is not what Apple wants to hear and it could be a bigger threat to them than “antennagate.” Expect this to be playing out soon and expect some lawyers to be scoring some serious cash. Not to mention that it could seriously put a crimp in Apple’s record profits.

Your iPhone Or iPad Tracks You…. Deal With It.

Posted in Commentary with tags , , , on April 20, 2011 by itnerd

News is springing up all over hell’s half acre that owners of the iPhone have to worry about the fact that the phone apparently tracks their every move. Of course the timing kind of sucked seeing as Apple came out with its quarterly report that showed that they made piles of money despite having iPad sales miss estimates, but that’s beside the point. If you dig beyond the hysteria, here’s the facts:

The fact is that I don’t take my privacy lightly. Having said that, I’m not shocked that pretty much everybody wants my location data. It’s valuable after all for advertising purposes. Think about it, ads tailored to your current location would be gold to advertisers. The fact that all these smart phone companies do the same thing should not come as as a great shock to anybody. If I have to criticize Apple for anything, it would have to be over the fact the location data is in an unencrypted file. Bad move Apple. But other than that, the fact is that if you want privacy in 2011, don’t use a smartphone or a tablet. Better yet, don’t use the Internet too. Privacy is a thing of the past. Get used to it.

Verizon iPhone 4 Has Antenna Problem…. Didn’t Apple Learn Anything?

Posted in Commentary with tags , on February 8, 2011 by itnerd

You gotta wonder what’s up with Apple? After their last go round with antenna issues on the original GSM iPhone 4, you’d think they’d make the Verizon iPhone bullet proof. But they they didn’t. They video brought to you by iLounge below shows the fact that the Verizon iPhone has the same antenna issues as the original GSM iPhone 4:

It actually gets worse. It’s not just the cellular antenna. It’s also the WiFi antenna that’s affected as well according to the article:

The problem with Wi-Fi reception appears when the device is held snugly in landscape orientation with two hands, a position common when playing games or using the widescreen keyboard. Prior to the Verizon iPhone 4’s launch, sources told iLounge to be on the lookout for the issue, which was being referred to as the “death hug.”

Apparently iLounge saw this coming and they have some observations:

It should be noted that although early Apple-sanctioned reviews of the Verizon iPhone 4 claimed that the antenna problems had been fixed in the CDMA model, the same reviewers failed to notice the antenna problems in their original coverage of the GSM model. iLounge’s testing so far has found that the Verizon iPhone 4’s issues appear in the same geographic location as the AT&T iPhone 4’s, indoors with an average of three bars of signal strength. Once again, use of a protective case appears to fix the antenna issue, and antenuation may not be noticeable in areas with stronger signal strength.

Steve, you have some explaining to do.

Verizon Gets The iPhone…. Freedom From AT&T Makes Fanbois Happy

Posted in Commentary with tags , , on January 11, 2011 by itnerd

The day that iPhone fanbois have been waiting for has finally arrived. You can now get an iPhone on the Verizon network starting on 2-10-11. If you’re willing to become tied to Verizon for 2 years, you’ll pay $199.99 for the 16GB model, and $299.99 for the 32GB model. No word on data plans as that’s “coming soon.”

While I’m sure that the fanbois are rejoicing happy as this is news that they’ve waited years for, there is one hitch. This is a CDMA only phone. So don’t expect to travel with it. It would have been nice if they came up with a dual CDMA/GSM phone just like the Blackberry Tour. But at least the fanbois have freedom from AT&T’s network.

Are Blackberries Being Dumped By Corporate Customers?

Posted in Commentary with tags , , on November 13, 2010 by itnerd

I must admit that I’ve started to see more Android and iPhones pop up in companies. Plus I’ve gotten some work lately to set up MS Exchange servers to support those phones as well. So I’ve wondered if RIM’s dominance in the corporate market was slipping. Then I read this story in the Globe And Mail this week that suggests that my observations were perhaps accurate to a degree:

Bank of America and Citigroup have joined a growing throng of financial institutions eyeing alternatives to the BlackBerry for corporate e-mail.

The banks are testing software designed to make Apple’s iPhone secure enough for company messages, Bloomberg said, citing three people familiar with the plan.

A source at Bank of America confirmed the details of the report. A Citi spokeswoman declined to comment.

Well that has to suck if you’re RIM. But I’m really not surprised. If you’re a company who wants to use Blackberry product and you have an MS Exchange or Lotus Domino e-mail server, you need to get a copy of Blackberry Enterprise Server. Now small business can score a copy for free, but larger companies can spend as much as $100 a device to provide e-mail to workers outside the office. If you want to use a iPhone or an Android phone (or those new Windows Phone 7 devices for that matter) in your company and you have MS Exchange, then you have ActiveSync built in already. So those phones will take very little effort to get access to your e-mail server. Just make sure you have all the latest service packs and roll ups installed. Cost to you: Other the cost of the devices, nothing. Plus I don’t hear about governments wanting to ban those devices. That’s another plus that companies have to take into account. Finally, ActiveSync is very secure as it supports remote wipe as well as SSL encryption. That’s good enough for most companies, but third party products exist for the truly paranoid.

Sorry RIM. It looks like your days might be numbered.

Apple To Planet Earth: “attenuation issue is even smaller than we originally thought”

Posted in Commentary with tags , on September 10, 2010 by itnerd

This was posted to Apple’s website today in an attempt to brush aside any notion that Apple has any antenna issue. Two tidbits appear in this posting. First, the free case program is ending at the end of the month. Second is this:

We now know that the iPhone 4 antenna attenuation issue is even smaller than we originally thought. A small percentage of iPhone 4 users need a case, and we want to continue providing them a Bumper case for free.

Oh really? How about some proof Apple? After all you really can’t go around making claims like that without backing them up? Right?

Germany Suggests iPhone And BlackBerry Ban

Posted in Commentary with tags , , on August 11, 2010 by itnerd

If you’re a minister in the German government, you better not be using a BlackBerry or iPhone because of “attacks” against it’s networks via these devices. I’ve taken the liberty of translating a story from business daily newspaper Handelsblatt using Google Translate:

The security of the SPD, Sebastian Edathy suggested that a general ban on the use of smartphones in certain ministries. It would be negligent if caused by an incorrect use of a security risk to the government work, “said Edathy the” Bild “-Zeitung. The Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) had warned iPhone because of security concerns against the use of BlackBerrys by the Canadian manufacturer Research in Motion or Apple’s. The Authority recommends that only the “Simko2” the telecom wholesale division T-Systems for data traffic.

Admittedly, this isn’t the best translation. But you get the idea. But reading this makes me wonder is there really a security issue here? Or perhaps it is about using a “Made In Germany” solution?

Thoughts?

Apple Exec Leaves The Company… Connection To “Antennagate” Perhaps? [UPDATED]

Posted in Commentary with tags , on August 8, 2010 by itnerd

The Globe And Mail is reporting that Mark Papermaster who is, or rather was the senior vice-president of iPhone and iPod hardware engineering is leaving the company. An Apple spokesperson won’t say if he was fired or he left voluntarily which leaves more questions than answers at this point. Either way, speculation is that he’s likely the first public casualty of the “Antennagate” circus that has plagued the iPhone 4 since it was released.

By the way if the name sounds familiar, it should. Apple hired him away from IBM and then got into a very messy legal spat that I documented on this blog. Bob Mansfield, Apple’s senior vice-president of Macintosh hardware engineering, will assuming Mr. Papermaster’s responsibilities.

In any case, it looks like the fit has hit the shan internally and you might even see some more heads roll over “Antennagate.”

UPDATE: Daring Fireball is reporting that inside Apple, Papermaster was known as the guy behind the antenna. I guess we now know that he was likely “asked to leave.”

Apple Canada Seems To Be Hording iPhone 4’s At The Expense Of Rogers, Bell And Telus Dealers…. WTF?

Posted in Commentary with tags , on August 5, 2010 by itnerd

If you want an iPhone in Canada, don’t bother trying to go to your local Rogers, Bell, and Telus dealer. The only way to get your hands on one seems to be to go the the Apple Store. Which in most cases requires you to wait in line for up to 4 hours or more. There’s a thread on the Canadian Apple Fanboi site EhMac.ca where these sort of sentiments are being posted:

It seems like the rest of Canada is being ignored so they can supply the Apple stores. Kind of sucky.
I’m sure the supplies will be at normal levels in a couple weeks. As in, anyone can get one anywhere.

And:

I was just at the Rogers store in Upper Canada mall and they told me that they weren’t getting any more until next month? What the heck?

And:

That was fast. Rogers didn’t get any. It seems all is going to Apple.
Still looking for the 32GB gold!

Charming. I took the liberty of speaking with a few Telus, Bell, and Rogers dealers and they said variants of the following: They got a few on launch day (July 30th) and haven’t seen any since. They also don’t know when they’re getting any more, but they feel screwed over by Apple as the Apple stores seem to be able to get stock at will. If I were Rogers, Bell, and Telus, I’d be beyond upset by Apple at this point.

Frankly, I’m not surprised by this behavior. Many moons ago I worked for a series of Apple resellers and there was always uneven (at best) product distribution that was heavily slanted towards their retail stores and away from their resellers. I didn’t find it fair at the time and many customers didn’t either.

So I guess the take home message from Apple Canada is that if you’re Canadian and you want an iPhone 4, the only place to get it is the Apple Store until Apple feels like sending them to Rogers, Bell, and Telus. Oh yeah, bring comfy shoes as the wait to get one is likely to be long…. If you get one at all.
