#FAIL: Martha Stewart Rants On Twitter Because Apple Won’t Come And Fix Her iPad

Posted in Commentary with tags , , on September 27, 2013 by itnerd

I’ll just lay it out there and comment later as this is going to take a bit to fully explain. Our saga begins with this tweet appeared on the Twitter account of domestic diva Martha Stewart:

What most people would do is to “take it” to an Apple store. Apparently she doesn’t see it that way:

So, she can’t seriously expect Apple to come pick it up can she? Why yes she is as evidenced by this tweet:

Huh? If that confuses you, this will as well:

I guess she got lit up on Twitter because of her comments. I’m also am guessing that she got the attention of Apple PR:

Oh my. What a diva. But she isn’t done yet:

Wow.

Here’s my $0.02 worth: She got her iPad for free and expected special treatment. Because after all, she’s Martha Stewart. Domestic diva and ex-con. She isn’t like you and I. When she didn’t get that treatment, she ranted on Twitter about that. And when she got the attention of the Twitterverse as well as Apple PR in a negative way, she started to spin this whole thing faster than a tire on a Formula 1 car. That’s just wrong.

Within an hour of each other, both Telus and Rogers e-mailed me to to say that they are going to carry the Fourth Generation iPad and iPad mini.

Both companies will have them available shortly and both companies will offer a range of data plans that are available without a contract so customers can activate or cancel a plan at any time.

Oh, if you’re new to iPad you can get the 411 on the iPad here. Check it out if you’re in the market for an iPad.

Apple Releases 128GB iPad… Do We Need An iPad With 128GB?

Posted in Commentary with tags , on January 30, 2013 by itnerd

I’ve gotten a few e-mails asking me why Apple would release a 128GB iPad. There’s one possibility that can be found in their press release. If you read it, the press release talks abut applications typically found in the enterprise such as AutoCAD. Thus this suggests that this is aimed not at consumers, but businesses. It makes sense as Apple has likely put as many iPads into the hands of consumers as it can and that market is likely not to grow at the same rate going forward. Thus it’s time for them to focus on the next big market which is business. If that’s the case. then Apple could really put up some big numbers going forward as I can say that business is really adopting the tablet in a big way.

As an aside, I wonder if the timing also takes away from RIM’s big day today? Thoughts?

The New iPad Goes On Sale… World Goes Bonkers

Posted in Commentary with tags , on March 16, 2012 by itnerd

Though this likely falls under the category of “good luck with that,”  the new iPad has gone on sale. Thus if you want one, you can try and get one. The Guardian has coverage of the hysteria that this has created, and it’s a safe bet that Apple’s stock price will break the $600 a share that it touched briefly earlier this week. There’s other news as well. If you’re on Sprint, you can apparently make your iPad work on AT&T’s network using a MicroSIM card from AT&T. Though you have to wonder why you would do this given AT&T’s rather craptastic customer service. Rogers also dropped me this news:

The new LTE enabled iPad launches today and we’re excited to offer a fantastic promotion that will help customers stay connected. Beginning today, customers activating the Rogers $5/month Tablet Flex Rate Plan will enjoy unlimited data for the first 2 months, then double the data for the next 4 months. No activation fee without a term commitment. This promotion is available for all iPad models with Wi-Fi + 3G or Wi-Fi + 4G as well as our all other tablets.

Clearly Rogers wants to cash in on this and I don’t blame them. Check out Redboard for more details.

I have yet to see a new iPad, but the reviews are out and are generally positive, though one review suggests that if you have the iPad 2, you shouldn’t rush out to get this iPad. If you have one, let us know what you think of it by writing a comment below.

Russia Bans iPad For Govenment Use….. Playbook Is A-OK Though

Posted in Commentary with tags , , , on July 31, 2011 by itnerd

Here’s an interesting reversal of fortune. The Apple iPad is apparently verboten in Russian government circles due to security concerns. However, the Blackberry Playbook which hasn’t exactly set the world on fire is good to go because of the fact it has FIPS-140-2 certification:

If true, the backing of the Russian government could prove to be another victory for RIM as it seeks to use its reputation of prioritizing security technology to position the BlackBerry PlayBook as the tablet of choice for businesses and governments, the way it originally marketed its BlackBerry smartphones.

Seeing as RIM has had nothing but bad news lately, this is great news for them. Assuming that this is true of course. If it is, you have to expect that El Jobso is not a happy camper at the moment.

QuikView For iPad Hits The Street

Posted in Commentary with tags , , on July 26, 2011 by itnerd

A Canadian software developer called Zod Studios e-mailed me a press release this afternoon announcing an app for iPad called QuikView. Here’s what you need to know about it:

With QuikView your essentially creating your own personal news hub. You get to choose the content that you want, what the layout of that page will look like, and even how many pages you want to have. Instead of news apps limiting the content you look at, QuikView allows you to fully customize that information to meet your own needs. Unlike other apps out there, QuikView is all about viewing information at a glance. Being able to browse through various types of content with the flip of a finger.

The app currently comes with 3 data feeds to choose from including an RSS Reader, YouTube and Twitter. Zod Studios will be adding Facebook into the mix very soon along with many others once they begin getting feedback from their users. If you don’t want to wait for them to make a data feed don’t worry because soon they will also allow third party developers the ability to create their own. QuikView is now available on the App Store for $1.99.

Interesting Features
– stream video to your AppleTV while you browse articles on your iPad
– create multiple pages with custom layouts
– group YouTube subscriptions into categories
– watch/listen to YouTube and read articles at the same time

I have to admit that this sounds very interesting. I don’t have an iPad, but at $1.99, it sounds like it’s worth getting. Check it out on the app store here or see what it looks like 0n the Zod Studios website here.

Your iPhone Or iPad Tracks You…. Deal With It.

Posted in Commentary with tags , , , on April 20, 2011 by itnerd

News is springing up all over hell’s half acre that owners of the iPhone have to worry about the fact that the phone apparently tracks their every move. Of course the timing kind of sucked seeing as Apple came out with its quarterly report that showed that they made piles of money despite having iPad sales miss estimates, but that’s beside the point. If you dig beyond the hysteria, here’s the facts:

The fact is that I don’t take my privacy lightly. Having said that, I’m not shocked that pretty much everybody wants my location data. It’s valuable after all for advertising purposes. Think about it, ads tailored to your current location would be gold to advertisers. The fact that all these smart phone companies do the same thing should not come as as a great shock to anybody. If I have to criticize Apple for anything, it would have to be over the fact the location data is in an unencrypted file. Bad move Apple. But other than that, the fact is that if you want privacy in 2011, don’t use a smartphone or a tablet. Better yet, don’t use the Internet too. Privacy is a thing of the past. Get used to it.

iPad 2 Announced…. World + Dog Go Bonkers

Posted in Commentary with tags , on March 2, 2011 by itnerd

It’s been a year since the iPad took the world by storm and ensured that Apple was swimming in more cash than some counties. Today at one of their famous media events, Apple announced the iPad 2.

Oh yeah, Steve Jobs was there and he looked fine to me. Not that his health is any of our business as I’ve said previously.

Back to the iPad 2. Here’s the reasons why you want to rush out to buy one:

  • It’s 33 percent thinner than the original iPad
  • It has a 1GHz dual-core Apple A5 custom-designed, high-performance, low-power system-on-a-chip
  • 9.7-inch (diagonal) LED-backlit glossy widescreen Multi-Touch display with IPS technology
  • 1024-by-768-pixel resolution at 132 pixels per inch (ppi)
  • Fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating
  • Support for display of multiple languages and characters simultaneously
  • Back camera: Video recording, HD (720p) up to 30 frames per second with audio; still camera with 5x digital zoom
  • Front camera: Video recording, VGA up to 30 frames per second with audio; VGA-quality still camera
  • Up to 10 hours of battery life
  • Wi-Fi + 3G model: UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA
  • Wi-Fi + 3G for Verizon model: CDMA EV-DO Rev. A
  • Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g/n)
  • Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR technology
  • iOS 4.3 will ship with the device. If you have a shiny iDevice, you can upgrade to iOS 4.3 on March 11

Early reports say that the iPad 2 is fast as hell and is a great follow on from the original iPad. American consumers will be able to judge for themselves next week. Canadians and the rest of the planet will get their first look at their local Temple Of Steve Jobs Apple Store on March 25th.

Shortly after this announcement, my “best friends at Rogers” sent me this:

Just wanted to let you know that we’ll offer plans to support it when it launches in Canada later this month. We will be extending our data sharing plans to include the iPad and we will also continue to offer the same two data plan options for the iPad 2 – both of which are available without a term contract and include free unlimited access to all Rogers WiFi Hot Spots:

·       250 MB for $15
·       5 GB for $35

There’s a few more details on RedBoard.

No more details at the moment, but we’ll keep you updated as we have more info to share.

I look forward to seeing the details as the devil is always in the details.

My only question is this. If you’re Samsung or RIM, what do you do now?

Here’s A Shock… Rogers Lets iPad Users Watch The World Cup For FREE

Posted in Commentary with tags , on June 19, 2010 by itnerd

I got a note from my “best friends at Rogers” that completely caught me off guard:

“Just a heads up to let you know that Rogers has launched a FIFA World Cup application specifically for our iPad customers. The new app will allow you to live stream all the remaining 2010 FIFA World Cup games on your iPad.

As a special offer for iPad customers the application will be absolutely free to download and use and all data generated while using the app on the Rogers network will not come out of your monthly data bucket.

Customers can get the app from the iTunes app store. Just search Rogers LIVE 2010 FIFA World Cup.”

Let me get this straight. Rogers customers who have data service on their iPad can grab a FREE app that allows them to watch world cup games on their iPads for FREE on the Rogers network. Wow. That’s something I didn’t see coming. Rogers is going to get a lot of mileage out of this. So if you’re on the Rogers network with a 3G iPad, hit the App Store and get your footy fix.

AT&T Kills Unlimited Data Plan…. WTF?

Posted in Commentary with tags , , on June 2, 2010 by itnerd

Even though AT&T is generally regarded as being a crappy carrier for iPhones and iPads, the one thing they did do right is have an unlimited plan. That ended today. AT&T has now announced that they now have “Lower-Priced Wireless Data Plans to Make Mobile Internet More Affordable to More People” which will allegedly fill the void. I looked at these plans and I have one word to describe them.

Bullshit.

Under AT&T’s old plans, $30/month bought you truly unlimited data. Now they have two plans, DataPlus offers 200MB of data for $15 a month, while DataPro gives you 2GB for $25. Here’s the catch. With DataPlus, if you run over 200MB you get another 200MB for $15, plus you can switch to the DataPro plan on the fly and switch back later. With DataPro, if you run over 2GB, you get another 1GB of data for $10. So in either case, you’ll pay more and get less for your money. Amazing!

Oh yeah, AT&T’s iPhone customers who have waited for tethering finally get it. But the catch is that under these new plans you are paying $20 EXTRA to use the same pool of data that you’ve already paid for. The old tethering plan (which didn’t support the iPhone BTW), gave you an additional 5GB of data for $30 a month. So you’re paying to use the tethering feature and you don’t get any more data. Amazing!

Oh yeah, these new plans apply to the iPad as well. So if I had bought a 3G iPad because of the unlimited data that was being offered at launch, I’d be really pissed right now because that option is gone.

The bottom line, AT&T has basically screwed it’s user base yet again. I know that data isn’t free, but these sorts of moves are just outrageous. If there wasn’t a reason for Apple to ditch them for another carrier before, this is a perfect reason to do so now.

I can’t wait for the fanbois to show up at AT&T’s doorstep with pitchforks and torches in hand.
