The LG G2¹s stunning display, advanced design and superb battery does it all without any trade-offs. Check out the announcement here. I’ve requested one for review, so watch for that in the near future.

20 People Shot With BB Guns At LG Promo Event #FAIL

Posted in Commentary with tags on August 12, 2013 by itnerd

Here’s how not to promote your new phones. At an LG promo event in Korea they decided that it was a great idea to release 100 helium-filled balloons, each carrying a voucher entitling the recipient to claim a 950,000 won ($852.54) smartphone. Here’s what happened next according to The Register:

But what must have sounded like a good idea in the marketing meeting quickly dissolved into chaos. People aren’t stupid. They figured out that the only way to get the voucher was to burst the balloons, and they showed up equipped to do so with BB guns, knives on sticks, and other tools.

Net result? A total of 20 people were shot with BBs. Can you say “worst, idea, EVER?”

If you want to see the chaos, check out the video:

LG Covers Its Bases With webOS

Posted in Commentary with tags , on February 26, 2013 by itnerd

LG has been an Android phone manufacturer for some time now. But they clearly don’t feel comfortable with just using Android. I say that because LG is going to get webOS from HP:

LG is acquiring WebOS from Hewlett-Packard, with the intention to use the operating system not for its mobile phones, but in its smart televisions. With the deal, LG obtains the source code for WebOS, related documentation, engineering talent, and related WebOS Web sites. LG also gets HP licenses for use with its WebOS products, and patents HP obtained from Palm. The financial terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.

So a bit of Palm lives, but I seriously doubt that they’re just going to use this in just TVs. With the fact that they get the engineering talent along with webOS, one has to think that they have other plans for webOS that they’re simply not talking about right now. If that’s true, this might make the mobile phone market very interesting.

Breaking: LG Optimus G Coming To Telus On November 13

Posted in Commentary with tags , on October 25, 2012 by itnerd

I just got an e-mail from Telus who are quickly competing with Rogers to be my “best friend” with the news that the LG Optimus G smartphone is coming to the Telus network on November 13. I don’t currently have any pricing details as of yet, but I’ll pass them along as soon as I get them. Powered by Android, it has an ultra-clear 4.7″ TrueHD IPS+ display protected by Gorilla Glass 2, a Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor, 4G LTE connectivity, and 2GB of RAM. It should be a fine addition to the Telus lineup.

LG Canada Announces Optimus Pad Tablet

Posted in Commentary with tags on May 17, 2011 by itnerd

There’s a new tablet in town. LG today announced the Optimus Pad tablet which is powered by Android and available via Rogers. Here’s the specs you need to know:

  • It’s powered by Google’s Android 3.0 Honeycomb platform and the NVIDIA Tegra 2 chipset
  • It has a 3D camera which is a first in the tablet space. It’s 5MP as well.
  • 1080p decoding for video with HDMI output
  • It has a 8.9 inch screen
  • HSPA+ with 14.4 Mbps speed

Sounds interesting. Pricing is set at $449.99 for a three year plan, a month-to-month plan for $649.99 or as a standalone purchase for $699.99.

Now if LG would send one my way to review it.

Patent Troll Files Lawsut Against Google, Apple, HTC, LG, Motorola, and Microsoft

A company called NTP who is best known for extracting $612.5 million from Research In Motion back in 2006 is at it again. They’re suing Google, Apple, HTC, LG, Motorola, and Microsoft for patent infringement:

“The filing of suit today is necessary to ensure that those companies who are infringing NTP’s patents will be required to pay a licensing fee,” Mr. Stout continued.  “In view of the USPTO Board’s ruling, the debate over whether Mr. Campana was an originator in the field of wireless email is over.  No patents in U.S. history have received as much scrutiny as NTP’s patents.  We are delighted that the USPTO Board has recognized the groundbreaking innovation of Mr. Campana by confirming 67 of NTP’s patent claims.  We are also confident that the USPTO’s rejections, which are on appeal before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, will be overturned.”

The thing is NTP is generally regarded as a patent troll as they have also filed lawsuits against Palm, AT&T, Sprint Nextel, T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless among others that make similar claims. Not to mention that their only assets are 50 or so patents that relate to wireless email and RF Antenna design. I hate companies like NTP as all they do is sit on technologies and don’t even develop them. They just wait for companies to infringe and then attack them. The result of this is that this chills innovation. I really hope that they get what’s coming to them, which would be nothing.
