Introducing the new LinkedIn Pages

Posted in Commentary with tags on November 13, 2018 by itnerd

LinkedIn has announced LinkedIn Pages – the next generation of LinkedIn Company Pages and Career Pages, to help empower companies to build active communities. LinkedIn also announced new integrations with 3rd party partners including Hootsuite, which enables admins to receive notifications when there is activity on their LinkedIn Pages and Crunchbase, which provides funding insights and key investors on LinkedIn Pages.

Pages have been rebuilt from the ground up to make it easier for brands, institutions and organizations, from small businesses to large enterprises, to foster constructive conversations with LinkedIn’s community of more than 590 million members.

Key new features to LinkedIn Pages include:

  • Join the Conversations that Matter: Community managers, also known as admins, can now post updates and respond to comments, on the go from the LinkedIn mobile app for iOS and Android. Admins can also associate their Page with hashtags, so they can listen in and respond to conversations happening about their brand or relevant topics on LinkedIn.
  • Know and Grow your Audience: We’ve built Content Suggestions, a new feature that surfaces the topics and content trending with their target audience on LinkedIn. With these insights, admins can now curate and create content that their audiences are sure to engage with.
  • Engage your People: LinkedIn introduces a suite of tools to help organizations engage their people by introducing the ability to discover and reshare their employees’ public LinkedIn posts from their Page. Organizations can also respond to and re-share any posts on LinkedIn where a company’s Page is mentioned, like customer testimonials and product reviews.
  • Enhance your Page with Career Pages: The new Career Pages gives companies and organizations a way to engage potential candidates with a Life tab and a Jobs tab that provide a customized look into an organization, culture, and jobs.

You can read more about Pages at the blog post here, and you can also read about how the new Career Pages makes it easier for companies and organizations to engage and connect with candidates here.

Posted in Commentary with tags on November 13, 2018 by itnerd

There are some new features for Yahoo Mail – Reminders and Unsubscribe.

  • Reminders: Users can now set reminders within emails to prioritize what matters the most to them. Real life example: just opened an email about the utility bill that’s due soon? Set a reminder to pay it in five days, and a notification will pop up then.
  • Unsubscribe: Implemented as an easy-to-find button when opening a message, the Unsubscribe feature lets users easily stop receiving emails without ever having to leave their Yahoo Mail inboxes.

For more information and to learn how to start using these on Android and iOs, check out the blog post on the topic.

McAfee Survey Highlights Risky Behaviour Of Online Holiday Shoppers

Posted in Commentary with tags on November 13, 2018 by itnerd

Findings from a new survey released by McAfee today show more than half of online holiday shoppers are willing to risk purchasing from potentially fake websites if it will save them money. Called Holiday Stresses, the survey revealed that online shoppers can be more careless while shopping online during the holiday shopping season.

Some of the survey’s other key findings included:

  • 53 per cent of online shoppers said the stress of the holiday season caused them to behave carelessly online
  • 31 per cent clicked on links in suspicious emails in a search for better deals
  • 22 per cent said they engaged in risky online behavior, such as using public Wi-Fi access for their shopping
  • 56 per cent are willing to use an unfamiliar site, if it allows them to save money

McAfee offered several tips for consumers who want to shop more safely online:

  • Connect with caution. Using public Wi-Fi might seem like a good idea in the moment, but if consumers are not careful, they could be unknowingly exposing their personal information or credit card details to cybercriminals who are snooping on the network. If public Wi-Fi must be used to conduct transactions, use a virtual private network (VPN) to help ensure a secure connection.
  • Think before you click. One of the easiest ways for a cybercriminal to target victims is by using phishing emails disguised as holiday savings or shipping notification, to lure consumers into clicking links that could lead to malware, or a phony website designed to steal personal information. Instead of clicking on a link in an email, it is always best to check directly with the source to verify an offer or shipment.
  • Browse with security protection. Use comprehensive security protection, like McAfee Total Protection, which can help protect devices against malware, phishing attacks and other threats. It includes McAfee WebAdvisorwhich can help identify malicious websites.
  • Use a tool to help protect your personal information. A solution like McAfee Identity Theft Protection, takes a proactive approach to help protect identities with personal and financial monitoring and recovery tools to help keep identities personal and secure.

Some Apple Users Locked Out Of Their iCloud Accounts

Posted in Commentary with tags on November 13, 2018 by itnerd

Reports have been coming in over the last few hours of Apple users finding that they are locked out of their iCloud accounts. The only way back in is to do a password reset. Now Apple will lock accounts when someone attempts to access an ID by entering their incorrect password too many times. So it is possible that what might be going on is some sort of brute force attack on iCloud accounts on a scale not previously seen. Or Apple could be having some sort of technical issue. At this point the cause isn’t clear as Apple isn’t really commenting as is typical for them.

How do you know if you are affected? iOS will present an alert in settings that says some Apple ID settings must be updated. Also, you may lose access to services like iMessage, iCloud and Apple Music if you do not verify your identity. If you find that your account is locked, you should follow the instructions here to unlock it. Also, you might want to strongly consider using two factor verification for your iCloud account whether you are affected or not.

How many users are affected? A lot if you go by social media. But an exact number is hard to come by. We’ll have to wait and see if there’s any clarity on that front via a comment from Apple or from some other source.

Cisco Unites SD-WAN & Security To Address The New Cloud Edge

Posted in Commentary with tags on November 13, 2018 by itnerd

Cisco is unifying its security and software-defined wide area network (SD-WAN) technologies to help organizations embrace the cloud faster with choice and confidence.

The WAN is undergoing a radical transformation. Today, organizations host their applications in multiple clouds – public, private and SaaS. The way people work has also changed; employees connect from coffee shops and airport lounges, instead of just the office. Now, organizations must rely on the Internet to connect users to business-critical applications. This has resulted in a new Cloud Edge – the intersection of networking and security.

Until now, SD-WAN solutions have forced IT to choose between application experience or security. By evolving its SD-WAN portfolio, Cisco is addressing the new realities of the Cloud Edge. Cisco SD-WAN can help IT deliver better application experiences and make users more productive with unmatched simplicity and scale. And now, best-of-breed security can be easily enabled anywhere it is needed, from the branch to the cloud.

Cisco SD-WAN: Simple, Secure, Scalable

Cisco SD-WAN is built to address today’s most pressing issues, yet flexible enough to tackle the challenges of tomorrow. New innovations include:

  • Fusing Security with SD-WAN: From application-aware enterprise firewall and intrusion prevention, to URL filtering, advanced security is now integrated into Cisco SD-WAN devices and managed through a single pane of glass. And Cisco SD-WAN is all powered by Talos, the industry’s most powerful cyber threat intelligence solution.
  • Simplifying Cloud Security Deployments: By integrating Cisco SD-WAN with Cisco Umbrella, access to malicious destinations can be blocked before a connection is ever established.
  • Applications Experience: Cisco has partnered with Microsoft to enhance the Office 365 application experience for users. Unlike other vendors, Cisco SD-WAN monitors in real-time all available paths to the Microsoft Office 365 cloud. Using Microsoft Office URLs, Cisco is also able to determine the closest cloud, resulting in up to 40 percent faster performance for users.
  • Open and Programmable: With open APIs, Cisco SD-WAN provides service providers and partners the opportunity to create unique new services. To help developers and network engineers innovate, Cisco DevNet has created new SD-WAN learning labs and sandboxes.
  • New SD-WAN Infrastructure: With the world’s broadest SD-WAN portfolio powered by Viptela and Meraki, Cisco is offering even more options for customers with two new Integrated Services Routers (ISR) designed for small and large branch offices.
  • Quick Start Service: Cisco is also helping customers accelerate SD-WAN deployments and decrease risk via a new SD-WAN Quick Start Service. For a fixed-price, customers get access to remote implementation and knowledge transfer capabilities to streamline projects.
  • Easy to Buy and Manage: Cisco has made it easier to consume and manage the new solution. Both the network and security can be purchased through a single license model and managed through a single interface.

  • Cisco SD-WAN Security and Microsoft Office 365 software: beginning Q4CY2018
  • Cisco ISR 1111X-8P and 4461 are available now

Review: 2019 Mazda CX-9 Signature AWD – Part 2

Posted in Products on November 13, 2018 by itnerd

uKwphuwvSfaXHu1npAsQrwThis is the 2.5l turbocharged 4 cylinder engine that powers the Mazda CX-9. You might have seen this engine before as it powered the Mazda6 Signature that I drove earlier this year. It puts out 227 horsepower and 310 pound feet of torque. But if you use premium instead of regular fuel, it puts out 250 horsepower. The torque remains the same. Now this engine combined with a 6 speed automatic transmission will move this CX-9 which my wife described as a “small school bus” sized vehicle with authority. It won’t snap your neck back, but this engine has more than enough ability to allow you to get off the line quickly, merge onto a highway with ease, and blow by transport trucks at will while doing highway speed. Basically, it will do everything you need it to do without an issue.

The six speed transmission that’s mated to this engine is well sorted and always seems to be in the right gear to power all four wheels. In fact, I am pretty sure that Mazda might have tweaked the shift logic on the CX-9 as I noted some differences (for the better) versus the last time I drove this vehicle. Handling is one area where Mazda definitely improved things. There’s less body roll in the 2019 CX-9. And the steering, which for the record was already good is sharper and more direct. In short, this three row SUV is even more fun to drive.

The accelerator is easy to modulate. Ditto for the brakes. Noise, harshness and vibration is approaching luxury car levels as this CX-9 is very, very quiet. The only times I heard anything was when I put my foot down to accelerate was the growl of the engine. One thing I would like to highlight is the sport mode switch. All it does is change the mapping of the transmission. It does not alter the steering or pedal feel which is what this switch does on pretty much any other vehicle. I think that’s a good thing and other auto manufacturers should take note.

In terms of fuel economy, I am currently getting 11.7L per 100 KMs which is decent as I am driving in city and highway traffic, most of which is in rush hour =, and I am making no attempt to drive in any way that saves fuel.

Tomorrow I will discuss the interior which can be described in two words: “Class Above.” Tune in tomorrow to find out why.
