Guest Post: NordVPN Discusses Phishing During Holiday Shopping Season And How To Stay Safe

Posted in Commentary with tags on November 23, 2018 by itnerd

The busiest shopping season is here, and cybercriminals are just as busy as bargain hunters. With the revenues from holiday sales online increasing year on year, the level of reported internet scams and other forms of crime is rising as well.

One of the biggest threats during the shopping season is online phishing. Phishing victims usually receive emails that look likemessages from legitimate online vendors, such as Amazon.Such emailsask to click on a link, whichmay, in turn, ask to submit theuser’s personal information.

“Unsuspecting shoppers may believe they are on their vendor’s website, while they are actually on a fake sitedesigned to extract their personal information,” said Ruby Gonzalez, Communications Director at NordVPN, a VPN service provider.

“Even thoughhackers are getting more and moresophisticated, it’s still possibleto recognize that you are visiting a fake site. Be especially cautious if you have clicked on alink or button received through an email – a well-designed phishing email may feature the logo and the general look of your favorite brand. It may even lead you to a sitethat looks like the real one. ”

The truth is, if a person is untrained in cybersecurity, a phishing email can easily lead themto sharesensitive information willingly and expose themselves to hackers. NordVPN offers easy online security tips to avoid phishing attacks and stay safe online.

Tips for spotting a phishing email:

1. Check thesender’s address. Don’t just trust the display name – pay attention to the email address. If the domain looks suspicious (e.g., info@secure.apple.com), don’t open the email.

2. Look for spelling and grammar mistakes. Serious companies don’t usually send out emails with bad grammar and basic spelling mistakes.

3. Take a look at the greeting. Your bank or another legitimate institution would often address you with your full name. If you see a vague “Dear user” instead, remain vigilant.

4. Don’t click on links– instead, hover your mouse on the button to see the destination link. Check if it looks legitimate and, especially, if it contains the “https”part to indicate a secure connection.

5.When in doubt, contact your bank or other institution over the phone or alternative email address and ask to confirm if the email is legitimate.

For additional safety, use a VPN. Using a VPN when browsing can protect you against malware and phishing that targets online access points.

Guest Post: The 2018 Citrix Cybersecurity Media Cheat Sheet For Holiday Season

Posted in Commentary with tags on November 22, 2018 by itnerd

Overview

We are heading into the heart of shopping season with Black Friday and Cyber Monday just around the corner. A recent survey found 50 per cent of Canadians said they plan to shop on Black Friday, and 31 per cent note a good portion of this shopping will be online.

This season can be a risky time for online consumers. Today’s cyber criminals are creating fake mobile apps or online properties to fool consumers into divulging personal and financial data. They are using phishing scams disguised as Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals.

This is also a risky time for organizations – which can be exposed to cyber threats via their employees. During this season, organizations should take a holistic approach that ensures they have the right safeguards, including policies, technologies and processes, in place to protect employees – and therefore the organization – from security threats.

The below security statistics show that many employees feel no responsibility for security, and shop the web using company devices. If employees use personal devices for work, or shop online using corporate devices, this can put personal and work data at risk.

  • 40 per cent employees believe that “as an employee” they bear zero responsibility for securing information
  • Half (49%) per cent have been a victim of a phishing email or an online virus.
  • 4-in-10 (38%) workers email work data home to their personal email;
  • 63 per cent have shopped or surfed the web on a company device; and
  • 6-in-10 (58%) employees have accessed personal or work data using public WIFI networks

Tips for Organizations

  • Foster a corporate culture around security. This includes updating policies and procedures, a strategy to secure mobile devices and remote access, and a process for managing and securing employee-owned devices. Emphasize policies when new personal devices enter the workplace after holiday seasons.
  • Equip employees with security training and education. Focus on the human factor to avoid threats such as phishing or malware, in advance of high-risk seasons such as the holidays.
  • Implement work technology and services that limit opportunities for breaches from the outset and allow for quick patches and updates.

Posted in Commentary with tags on November 21, 2018 by itnerd

Coding for Veterans announces the official launch of the program and is honoured for the opportunity to take part in the TSX Market Open at the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) on Friday November 23rd.

Employers are literally lining-up to hire the first grads from this program. Jeff Musson, CEO of Dynamite Network envisioned the Coding for Veterans program one year ago.  Since that time, the program has developed a collaboration with the Toronto Campus of Northeastern University to help veterans’ transition to the civilian economy.  The outcomes of this industry led program meets an urgent need for cyber security and data analytics expertise in the Canadian IT industry.

What makes this program unique from other Veteran’s programs is that it focuses on the IT jobs openings and then works back to the individual veterans in order to guarantee that their skill set aligns with the job openings.  This is a simple, but unique approach that has been developed to ensure the program’s success.

Senior industry and government leaders along with veterans and current serving members of the military are showing support to the program.  They will be on hand at the TSX market open to answer questions about the need and opportunity that the Coding for Veterans program provides.

John Proctor, CEO of Martello Technologies Group Inc. the global leading provider of network performance management solutions for real-time communications, will join Coding for Veterans to ring the bell at the TSX. This is the second time that Mr. Proctor will ring the opening bell this year – on September 12, 2018 Martello debuted on the TSX Venture Exchange, the first Ottawa-headquartered tech company to go public on the TSXV since 2015.

Coding for Veterans wants to thank the TSX for the support they have given towards this program. The TSX Market Opens are broadcast live on television and live streamed on YouTube. The event will also be featured on TSX.com and TMX.com, and shared through Twitter and Facebook. www.codingforveterans.com

Review: Tile Pro With Replaceable Battery

Posted in Products with tags on November 20, 2018 by itnerd

A few weeks ago I reviewed the Tile Mate which has a replaceable battery. At the time I said this:

Tile has finally addressed the number one issue that this product had which is the lack of a replaceable battery. That makes Tile products something that I can finally recommend without reservation.

The fact that the battery is replaceable is huge. But I wanted to get a version of the Tile that was more rugged for keys and the like. So I got my hands on this:

u%LzNqTgQX2cDovtiZVOgA

Meet the Tile Pro. It has the following in common with the Tile Mate:

1lIU1aEzRKCFdAeCc+iqVw

It has the long overdue replaceable battery. But unlike the Tile Mate which has a CR1632 battery which is not exactly common, it has a more common CR2032 battery. The reason for that is that it needs a bigger battery because it has a 300 foot range (versus 150 feet for the Tile Mate) and it is much louder than the Tile Mate based on my ears. It’s also is much more rugged than the Tile Mate so it should survive most things that it might be subjected to. Strangely, it doesn’t claim to be waterproof like the Tile Sport. I am guessing that the fact that you can replace the battery is the reason why.

Tile now has a Premium service which gives you the following features:

  • Smart Alerts: You’ll get pinged on your phone if you leave someplace without items that are deemed to be important.
  • Free batteries.
  • Location history of your Tile enabled objects
  • Unlimited sharing of your Tiles with others
  • A warranty increase from 1 to 3 years.
  • Premium tech support

All of that goes for $29.99 USD a year. While I personally don’t see enough value to fork out the cash, you might. It is very easy to set up, and you can use it to find your phone in a pinch. Not to mention that there are thousands of Tile users out there who can help you to find a lost item which while I’ve never had to leverage that is something that is nice to know.

Tile Pro goes for $35 USD or $60 USD for two, or $100 USD for four. While the Tile Pro isn’t waterproof, I can recommend this as a means to keep track of your stuff without hesitation.
