My Every Day Carry (EDC) – The 2024 Edition

Posted in Products with tags , , , , , , , , on November 16, 2024 by itnerd

My every day carry or EDC has evolved slightly since the last time that I covered what my EDC consists of. I’ve tweaked some of the items that I carry not only for meeting my daily needs but to add some style as well. So let’s have a look at what my EDC consists of the following:

I am still using the iPhone 14 Pro as it’s a fast phone and none of the Apple Intelligence stuff or the camera upgrades have enticed me to switch to the iPhone 16 Pro. I have a dbrand Grip Case on it and I protect the screen with a dbrand Prism 2.0 screen protector. The only thing that I have done to the phone is have the battery replaced under AppleCare when the battery health went below 80%. Now for formal occasions I have been known to switch my case to this one from Mujjo, but I might be able to get away with not having to do that as the dbrand case is something that I might be able to roll with for any occasion. We’ll have to see the next time I have to do something super formal.

I now use the original Apple Watch Ultra as that fits with the sports and other athletic activities that I do. I’ve had this for over 2 years and the battery health is currently at 94% which is outstanding after two years. While you see it here with the Apple Nike Sport band, I do have a selection of bands that I can swap to if the need arises. Including this recent addition. I’ve also customized the watch with apps that make it close to a Garmin watch as that fits with the fact that I am a very athletic person.

Next up is the Ekster Carbon Fibre Cardholder which is made of 3K carbon fibre. All the cards and ID that I need are in this slim and light package that I barely notice in my pocket. It does have RFID blocking capabilities which is a good thing. One thing that I should point out is that if I am wanting to slim down what I carry, I can switch to either this MagSafe wallet for formal occasions, or this MagSafe wallet if I am going for a bike ride. In either case, I just take my ID out and place it in the MagSafe wallet of choice and the wallet on the back of my iPhone 14 Pro.

I make sure that I know where my wallet is at all times by having this Zike Smart Tracking Card inside the wallet which integrates with Apple’s Find My network. One thing that I really like about this tracking card is that unlike a lot of them, this one is rechargeable. So when the battery goes dead, I just toss it onto a wireless charger and I get a charge that lasts about six months as opposed to having a card that works for about two years that you then have to replace when the battery goes dead.

If I want to listen to music while I am on the go, my Apple AirPods Pro is my go to as they allow you use active noise cancelling to shut out the outside world, or use transparency mode to stay aware of what’s going on around you. I have been wanting to replace them with the AirPods Pro 2 but these won’t die. They are wrapped up in the dbrand AirPods Pro Grip case to make sure that I don’t drop and damage them. I should also mention that I did replace the stock silicone ear tips with the Comply Foam Tips which not only make the AirPods Pro feel more comfortable in my ears, but they allow the AirPods stay in my ears better. They also sound better and noise cancelling works better.

When I am not driving, my sunglasses of choice are the Rudy Project Zyon’s. My wife originally got them with the prescription inserts. But she then moved onto a different Rudy Project model. Thus I took them, removed the inserts and have been using them ever since. I really like these as they provide a great amount of coverage, which means better protection for my eyes.

My keys are the next things that I grab. My keys are in a KeyPort Pivot 2.0 key holder which on the inside I have a 64GB USB stick, a multi-tool that in a pinch can open an Amazon box, a SIM card ejector tool, and a pen. Oh yeah. It also has my keys as well. One thing that I appreciate about this setup is that keys don’t dig into my thighs and they don’t jingle. I also have my key fob for my condo along with an Apple AirTag on them to find them when I misplace them. Since you can’t directly mount an AirTag to anything, I use the Belkin Secure Holder with the AirTag as it’s secure and cheap relative to the cost of what Apple wants you to pay for their products.

If I am driving I take my car keys with me as well, and they too have an Apple AirTag along with a Belkin Secure Holder on them.

The Groove Life Groove Belt is a great addition to my EDC as I can use it for formal occasions or just wearing jeans. It comes together using some really strong magnets and you feel like a superhero when you put it on. I’ll also point out that you can resize it at will which is handy as I have steadily been losing weight over the last couple of years.

The last item is some Blistex or some other form of lip protection as I get really dry lips.

That’s my EDC or every day carry. What do you think? What do you think I should add to it or change? And were you able to spot the theme? Drop a comment below and share your thoughts. In the meantime, stay tuned for a look at my Tech Sling that I carry with me when I see clients as that has a lot of interesting things in it.

My Every Day Carry (EDC) – The 2022 Edition

Posted in Products with tags , , , , , , , on May 20, 2022 by itnerd

My every day carry or EDC has evolved over the last year or so. I’ve tweaked some of the items that I carry not only for meeting my daily needs but to add some style as well. As we go through this, you’ll see a trend. Let’s see if you can spot what it is. Let’s start with the phone that I carry on a daily basis:

My current phone is the  iPhone 12 Pro. It covers my needs for a fast phone with great cameras, lots of storage, and an amazing screen. I always keep my phones in a case, and the case that I use on a daily basis is the Spigen Tough Armor which has a kickstand for watching media hands free. But more importantly promises twice the military standard for drop protection. Something that I’ve unintentionally tested on a few occasions. To add to that protection, I have added a FloLab NanoArmour Anti-Microbial Screen Protector screen protector on it so that scratches on the screen are a non-issue and it gives the screen some extra resilience. The anti-microbial features are really just a bonus. You’ll also note that on the back I have a carbon fibre skin done by dBrand which is most evident around the camera and Apple logo.

The Apple Watch Series 6 with cellular is my smart watch of choice as its a great way to stay in touch without carrying my phone if I choose to do that as I can stay in touch minus my phone as this is the cellular model. It also keeps track of all my health metrics as that’s important to me these days. While you see that I have a Nike sports band on it at the moment, I have a variety of bands to choose from.

My keys are the next things that I grab. My keys are in a KeyPort Pivot 2.0 key holder which on the outside includes a flashlight along with a Lightning to USB cable which can allow me to charge my phone if I need to in a pinch. On the inside I have a 64GB USB stick, a multi-tool that in a pinch can open an Amazon box, a SIM card ejector tool, and a pen. Oh yeah. It also has my keys as well. One thing that I appreciate about this setup is that keys don’t dig into my thighs and they don’t jingle. Besides having actual keys and a key fob for my condo along with a hook to allow me to hook onto things like door handles that look sketchy, I also have the Apple AirTag on them to find them when I misplace them. Since you can’t directly mount an AirTag to anything, I use the Belkin Secure Holder with the AirTag as it’s secure and cheap relative to the cost of what Apple wants you to pay for their products.

My car keys also live in my pocket and they have an Apple AirTag which is being held in a Belkin Secure Holder so that I can find them when I misplace them.

A new addition to my every day carry is this Ekster Carbon Fibre Cardholder which is made of 3K carbon fibre. All the cards and ID that I need are in this slim and light package that I barely notice in my pocket. It does have RFID blocking capabilities which is a good thing. It also is a statement piece when I whip it out to pay for something. Or as the kids would say, it’s a flex.

I have this Chipolo CARD Spot tracking card in my cardholder so that I can use Apple’s Find My app to find it should I misplace it. While it hasn’t got the same sort of precision finding functionality of an AirTag, it does allow you to play “Marco/Polo” to find it if you lose it. One bummer is that it has non-replaceable batteries. That means that I will have to spring for a new one in a couple of years time. Hopefully by then there will be other options in this form factor that have replacement batteries.

I’ve been carrying this Victorinox CyberTool M for years. And if you look at the picture, it shows as you can see that it does have some light scratches on it. Despite that it still looks great and works just fine. That’s a testament to the quality that Victorinox builds into I use it to do everything from open up computers and to open up Amazon boxes as it has 32 different tools on it that are useful for almost any situation that I have found myself in. I have a pouch for it that has a loop that allows me to put it on my belt. It is beaten up. But that’s not a surprise as the CyberTool M and the pouch are well over a decade old.

Let’s say that I can’t carry my Swiss Army knife because I’m getting on a plane. Or I choose not to carry it. I have two other options for multi-tools to choose from. The first is the Axiom FLAT PACK TO 8 multi-tool. Originally designed for cyclists who might need to fix something on the road, I’ve found that it is useful for opening up computers as it has Allen keys as part of the deal. It doesn’t take up a whole lot of space in my pocket and it’s durable.

My second option is the Swiss+Tech Transformer 11-In-1 multi-tool. While it is on the heavy side, it does have a full array of screwdrivers and a flashlight among other things in a package that fits in my pocket. I’ve only ever had to replace the batteries for the flashlight. Beyond that, it’s survived the test of time as I have had this since the late 2000’s.

If I want to listen to music while I am on the go, my Apple AirPods Pro is my go to as they allow you use active noise cancelling to shut out the outside world, or use transparency mode to stay aware of what’s going on around you. I put them in a Spigen Rugged Armour AirPods Pro case which protects them from scratches and provides some drop protection. The case came with a carabiner that recently broke. Thus I replaced it with a more heavy duty carabiner that has a screw lock along with a matte black ring. One other thing that I have done is replace the silicone ear tips with the Comply Foam Tips which not only make the AirPods Pro feel more comfortable in my ears, but they allow the AirPods stay in my ears better.

If I am going to be out for while and I need to ensure that I have enough power to keep my phone online, I drop this Jackery Mini power bank in my pocket. It’s a 3200 mAh power bank that allows me to get about a 70% charge on my iPhone 12 Pro should I need it. It will also give my AirPods Pro a full charge as well. It doesn’t take up a lot of real estate in my pocket which is a good thing. In terms of a cable, that’s when the Lightning cable that’s on my key holder comes in handy as both my AirPods Pro and iPhone 12 Pro can use that to get a charge.

In a rare photo of yours truly, you can see the Rudy Project Deewhy sunglasses with Polar3FX HDR Grey lenses. Rudy Project doesn’t make these anymore, but that doesn’t matter to me as they work extremely well for me. The lenses are polarized lenses that filter harmful UV rays and eliminates glare by selectively filtering non harmful wavelengths through the lens. It’s designed to filter glare from car headlights, sun rays and the refracted light on wet or shiny surfaces like water and snow. All of which means that my eyes don’t take a beating when I drive. I also use them when I am walking around town. You can also see the Devon+Lange 3 layer face mask that is made from silver infused premium modal, and it has a filter pocket to hold the included PM2.5 filters. There’s also a removable and replaceable nose piece to ensure that they fit properly. These masks are comfortable to wear, I can breathe in them and I can wear them for long periods of time without an issue.

When I can’t be bothered to take a trip down to the car to get my Rudy Project Deewhy sunglasses as that’s where those sunglasses normally live, I often grab these Rudy Project Agon sunglasses which live at my desk. They have the “Laser Black” lenses which allows for about 12% light transmission. But I also notice that they enhance contrast and I can wear them while driving, or taking a walk in the woods or just walking around. The fact that they enhance contrast means that you can pick up small details that would have gone unnoticed even by the naked eye. Such has cracks in the road while driving or uneven terrain while hiking. That makes them a great general purpose pair of sunglasses for me.

From the mundane item department comes this tube of Blistex. I often have dry chapped lips. So to mitigate that I always have some lip balm on me. In this case it’s Blistex, but I have also been known to carry ChapStick as well.

That’s my EDC or every day carry. What do you think? What do you think I should add to it or change? And were you able to spot the theme? Drop a comment below and share your thoughts.

Review: Ekster Carbon Fibre Cardholder

Posted in Products with tags on May 8, 2022 by itnerd

Ekster wallets have been my go to cardholder for some time now. First I did a review of their Aluminum Cardholder, which my wife then promptly claimed as her own. Then Ekster was kind enough to send me a second wallet which I then tried out for two weeks and loved so much that it became part of my every day carry. But I wasn’t a fan of the camo look of the wallet. Sure it didn’t affect how the wallet functions, but my personal style is black, matte black, or carbon fibre all the things. So I decided to treat myself to a new Ekster wallet. Specifically their Carbon Fibre Cardholder. Instead of being made of 6061-T6 aluminum, this cardholder is made from 3K carbon fibre. 3K carbon is the workhorse of carbon fiber because it’s light and relatively stiff. 3K has a high threshold before failure and better strength than 6K, 9K or 12K. It is typically used in aviation, industrial purposes, sporting and recreation goods such as bike frames and tennis racquets. In short, this is quality stuff that also looks cool as a side benefit.

So let’s start with the fact that this is a light cardholder. Here’s the weight of the aluminum variant:

Now 77 grams is pretty light. But Here’s what you get for the carbon fibre variant:

It may be hard to read, but it says 62 grams. That’s a 15 gram difference. And surprisingly, I do notice it in my pocket. Plus it feels just as stiff and solid as the aluminum version. As far as I am concerned, that’s a win. And it comes with exactly the same functionality as the aluminum version. Specifically:

The main section of cardholder fans out your cards at the click of a button. This is where you store your less frequently used cards. The cardholder holds a maximum of 6 non-embossed cards, or a combination of 4 – 5 embossed/non-embossed cards (depending on the thickness of each card). You can also shove a couple of bills or something like a proximity card under the strap as well.

The expandable metal backplate (it is a shame that this wasn’t carbon fibre as well) allows you to carry a pair of cards that you frequently access (credit cards for example) while keeping a slim profile. There a notch at the bottom center of this section that helps you to push them out so that you can get to them. Finally, it still has the RFID protection in place.

My only gripe is the cost. This is not cheap as it $103 CDN. It does come in two styles in case you don’t like the carbon fibre weave that you see above. But if you want to add a bit of style your everyday carry, and shave some weight in the process, this is a great, though pricey way to do both.

Two Week Challenge: Ekster Aluminum Cardholder – My Final Thoughts

Posted in Products with tags on November 27, 2021 by itnerd

I’ve come to the end of my two week challenge of using this super slim Ekster Aluminum Cardholder. In the first part of this challenge, I was able to get all the cards that I need into it. And I think that’s due to the fact that a lot of cards these days are digital (as in they are on your phone for example) rather than physical. That highlights that you don’t really need to have a big wallet to carry your stuff along. And related to that, I found that the stuff like parking receipts don’t collect inside my wallet. That’s a good thing as well.

In the second part of this challenge, I decided to use the Ekster Tracker Card. I think the concept is solid because it is thin, recharges the internal battery via light, and gives me a decent shot at finding this cardholder if I lose it. My only suggestion is that Ekster, or more accurately Chipolo who makes the tech behind this card have a version that works with Apple’s Find My network. Seeing as I have a few AirTags in use, it would be nice to not have to run an another app to keep track of the cardholder. And I am sure that other Apple users would appreciate it.

Related to this, a reader who owns a Ekster Cardholder emailed me with his hack to use an AirTag. He uses this AirTag holder for dog/cat collars on his cardholder. He claimed that it doesn’t add that much bulk and is secure. So for giggles, I ordered one.

The AirTag added some amount of bulk, especially in my pocket. But it’s a kludge and not a solution as the whole point of having this cardholder is to keep the bulk to a minimun. Though I can see someone in the iOS ecosystem deciding to use this method as they really want to have this cardholder and an AirTag.

Here’s the bottom line. The Ekster Aluminum Cardholder really slims down your pocket and almost feels like it’s not there. While the camo design doesn’t match the matte black/carbon fibre vibe that I tend to use with my gear, I am absolutely going to make this part of my everyday carry. If you want to slim down your wallet, this is absolutely the way to go. If Ekster comes out with a Find My compatible Tracker Card, it would be perfect. But even without that, I would highly recommend the Ekster Aluminum Cardholder without question.

Two Week Challenge: Ekster Aluminum Cardholder – One Week In

Posted in Products with tags on November 20, 2021 by itnerd

So I am one week into my challenge to use the Ekster Aluminum Cardholder which I have previously reviewed here as my daily wallet. Last week I figured out how to get all my cards into it and discovered that I was able to get everything that I actually used into this cardholder. I also found that it was much thinner than what I was used to carrying in terms of a wallet. This is a win for me as I never realized how bulky my wallet was because I was so used to it.

Now one question that I got over the last week was how do I carry cash? I have to admit that since the start of the pandemic, I rarely carry cash. But here’s how I do it with this cardholder:

I don’t think I will be carrying a lot of cash. But fitting 3 or 4 folded up bills doesn’t seem to be a problem.

One other thing that I did this week is that I pulled the trigger in terms of using the Ekster Tracker Card.

Here’s a look at the card by itself:

It’s powered by powered by Chipolo technology and it replaces the AirTag that was in my previous wallet. Setting it up amounted to downloading the Chipolo app for iOS and pairing it by pressing the button on the card. That’s the Ekster logo in the middle of the card. It’s thin and doesn’t take up a lot of real estate. And it will give me a shot at finding my wallet should I lose it. My one suggestion for Ekster would be to have a version of this tracker card that integrates with the Find My app on iOS. I say that because I have been transitioning to using AirTags which uses the Find My app on Apple products, and it would be nice if I don’t have to run one more app to keep track of my items. There’s also the fact that Chipolo has done exactly this with one of their products, so I assume that it must be possible with this card. Plus Ekster does make a fair amount of gear for Apple users. So it would be a natural fit in my mind.

Any complaints or grips? Not really at this point. Though I have to admit that I miss the ability to put things like parking receipts and the like in my wallet. But the flip side of that is it means that the wallet no longer becomes a black hole for stuff that stays in there for months for no good reason. So by having this cardholder, I am forcing myself to become more disciplined about what I keep and what I throw away.

I have one more week to go in this challenge and so far it’s been pretty positive thus far. I’ll report back in one week’s time with my final thoughts and if I will keep this cardholder as my daily driver. Stay tuned for that,.

Two Week Challenge: Ekster Aluminum Cardholder

Posted in Products with tags on November 14, 2021 by itnerd

Back in May, I had the chance to review the Ekster Aluminum Cardholder. The thing was that my wife took it off my hands and I never saw it again. So it was really great that Ekster sent me another one. And I decided to do something really different which is to challenge myself to replace my current wallet that I highlighted in my EDC write up for two weeks.

Let’s have a look at the cardholder.

It’s a camo color which isn’t usually my thing as I like black or dark coloured things. But I can still make this work as it’s not over the top in any way. In my case, I have following in the cardholder:

Inner slot:

  • Two credit cards
  • A debit card proximity card
  • A CAA card
  • A Presto card

On the back:

  • A proximity building entry card

On the outer slot:

  • My drivers license
  • My OHIP card
  • Two supplemental insurance cards

I had to leave out of two cards from this cardholder. But it wasn’t an issue for me. One was my Aeroplan card as that’s replicated in Apple Wallet. The other thing was a Kernel’s rewards card which I no longer use. Getting all my stuff into it from my normal wallet was my main concern.

The other thing that I had to ditch was my Apple AirTag which was in my old wallet. I could replace it with Ekster’s Tracker Card though. The tracker card is powered by powered by Chipolo technology and is recharged by sunlight. It takes 3 hours of charge and lasts 2-3 months on a charge. That allows you to find the wallet via Bluetooth LE 4.0 from up to 200 feet away. Using the Chipolo app you can ring the tracker card so that you can play a game of “Marco Polo” to find it, or see it’s last location that it was near your phone if you do lose it. I don’t presently have it on my wallet. But I may add it later as it doesn’t add too much to the cardholder.

Speaking of thickness, here’s a couple of shots of the cardholder next to my old wallet:

The Ekster Cardholder has way less bulk and is much slimmer than my wallet. Granted there’s nothing in the wallet. But even empty there’s a significant difference. And that’s a difference that I can feel in my pocket as I sometimes have to check to see if it’s there. Plus I can see scenarios where I can carry this cardholder because of the size. For example, when I cross country ski, or go out on my bike where a normal wallet was way too bulky to carry. Even just having it in my pocket is great as I barely notice it.

Over the next two weeks, I will be using the cardholder full time and I will see if this could be a great replacement for a regular wallet. To be honest, I am not sure what to expect from this challenge. But it will be interesting to find out. Stay tuned.

Review: Ekster Aluminum Cardholder

Posted in Products with tags on May 29, 2021 by itnerd

Father’s Day is coming up and a very common gift is a new wallet. But instead of giving Dad yet another wallet that looks the same as his last wallet, how about serving up something with a bit of style and tech? To that end, let me introduce to you the Ekster Aluminum Cardholder:

This is a 6061-T6 aluminumaluminum wallet built for quick access of all your cards via two compartments. It’s also capable of carrying cash in the form of bills as well.

The expandable metal backplate allows you to carry a pair of cards that you frequently access (credit cards for example) while keeping a slim profile. There a notch at the bottom center of this section that helps you to push them out so that you can get to them.

The main section of cardholder fans out your cards at the click of a button. This is where you store your less frequently used cards. The cardholder holds a maximum of 6 non-embossed cards, or a combination of 4 – 5 embossed/non-embossed cards (depending on the thickness of each card).

One handy thing that this cardholder offers is RFID protection

There’s one more trick that this cardholder has:

You can get an optional Tracker Card so that you can track down this wallet if you lose it. From the party tricks department, you can use the card to ring your phone if you misplace that, or you can use Google Assistant, Alexa and Siri to help you find the wallet. Of course there’s also the Chipolo network that can help you to find your cardholder should you use it. Based on this map their network seems to be concentrated on the East Coast of the US, the West Coast of the US, the Mid-West, Central Canada, Western Europe, Japan and South Korea. Which means that if you live in those areas, your odds of finding this carholder improves significantly.

Now, I was planning to test this out, but my wife got her hands on it before I did and immediately wanted to test it out herself as she keeps her various cards loose in her purse, which means she has a habit of misplacing them. For example, she misplaced her health insurance card when we needed it to book our COVID shots. Based on the fact that she said her cards went “flying everywhere” inside the car when she went to pay for something at a drive thru, I searched the car for 10 minutes and eventually found it under a seat in a very hard to get to place. So I acquiesced and let her try this out for a few days. Here’s her feedback:

  • She likes the RFID protection that this cardholder offers.
  • It keeps all her daily essential cards.
  • From a woman’s perspective, it really helps to keep everything organized and makes it easy to go from purse to purse.
  • It is super slim so you can leave your purse at home and simply take the card holder with you with everything you need.
  • It is solid and it has some weight to it. But it’s functional weight so that’s fine.
  • It is easy to organize your cards so that you have easy access to whatever you need at the click of a button or a push in the notch of the backplate.
  • You can still carry cash if you need to.

Though I never got the card holder back from my wife, and I am apparently not going to because she likes it so much, I can say from a male perspective, that having everything in such a slim packages would be a win for me. Which means I will have to get one of these for myself. If I got one of these as a gift, I’d be very happy.

The Ekster Aluminum Cardholder goes for $63 USD direct from Ekster and has 8 color options. The Tracker Card is optional and goes for $39 USD (down from $49 USD). This is a really cool cardholder that doesn’t add any bulk and I also should say looks cool and modern. It makes a great gift for Dad, and apparently works well for women too.

Review: Ekster MagSafe Compatible Card Holder

Posted in Products with tags on March 4, 2021 by itnerd

The iPhone 12 brought MagSafe to the table. It allows for faster charging as well as the use of accessories. Numerous third parties are starting to come to the table with accessories that are MagSafe compatible. I had the chance to test one of those accessories in the form of the Ekster MagSafe Compatible Card Holder.

The first thing that I noticed is that this was a well put together piece of kit. My examination showed that it is well stitched and the leather is of high quality. As it should be as the leather is supplied by ECCO which according to them “develops highly progressive leather qualities for some of the industry’s most iconic contemporary designers and brands.” One thing that I did note is that it is very similar to the Apple MagSafe Wallet as it has a hole in the back to help you to remove the back card. Ekster says you can hold three cards and some cash. I could only get two cards in and out of the wallet. But being a leather product means that this will stretch a bit. Thus I can see that this might be possible.

Here’s how it looks on the back of my iPhone 12 Pro.

One thing I noted right away is that the magnet is strong. I was able to put this in and out of my pockets without the wallet slipping off. Front pocket, back pocket, pockets with other stuff in them, it didn’t matter. That was impressive given that I have a DBrand skin on the back of my iPhone 12 which I would have thought that it would cause problems with how strong the wallet attached to my phone. But clearly that isn’t the case. I think that I can safely say that you don’t have to worry about losing the wallet.

Gripes? I really don’t have any about the wallet itself. But using the wallet means that I need either use my iPhone 12 Pro naked which I am not comfortable with, or I need to get a case that is MagSafe compatible. But once the world stops ending, I can see this being useful when I can go out for an evening and leave my usual wallet at home, but still carry my drivers license and a debit or credit card.

The Ekster MagSafe Compatible Card Holder is $39 USD normally. But it’s currently on sale for $33 USD. Either price is lower than the $59 that Apple MagSafe Wallet with makes this a good value. If you want to add some style to your iPhone 12, this wallet will help you to do just that.
